The end of empires and the rise of nation-states have transformed the way politics and societies operate and the modern sense of these changes, transformations, events, and situations. Language, culture, and memory are essential pillars of the nation-states' projects of creating a new society. The modern form of government, the nation-state, use history not only as a means of transmission but also as a means of building identity and memory. This study examines the case files of three critical names in the Kurdish movement and the history-based debates in their trials. By applying discourse analysis, we have shown how the Turkish state and The Kurdish Workers' Party used history as a tool to "prove" and "disprove" the existence of Kurds, the Kurdish language, and Kurdistan. While the judges imposed an evidence-based approach to history and denied the existence of Kurds, Kurdish and Kurdistan, the PKK members opposed the official thesis of the state and built their arguments more on the day-to-day realities of life. The study's main argument is that the official ideology uses history to prove and convey a message to the rest of society, whereas the defendants used it as a means of protest depending on the historical reality rather than history as a science. This study discusses that by using science to make examples of these members, the judges used history to prove the Kurds' non-existence, whereas the defendants implied history as a way of protesting the ruling authority.

After the outbreak of the Syrian war, the armed resistance of the Kurds against the radical Islamists drew considerable attention from across the world. Although the Kurdish movement has a history of forty years of armed fight in the region, especially against Turkey, they gained global fame during the war in Syria. Apart from media attention to the resistance of women, in particular, the establishment of a political system, democratic confederalism, which the world was not familiar with, came to exist in the area liberated from the religious fundamentalists in Syria. The Kurds during the Syrian civil war, on one hand, gained international fame for their fight against the radical Islamists; on the other hand, they put a new theory of governance, democratic confederalism, in practice in northern Syria. This paper seeks to provide a brief review of the theory of democratic confederalism and its practices in Rojava to build an argument regarding its future. This case study aims to explore how and why the theory and practices of democratic confederalism co-exist and which factors may influence the Rojava revolution's future. This review's central argument is that while democratic confederalism is a revolution in the field, it is also an experiment whose future depends on how the people will adopt it and how the global and regional powers will approach it.

La captura del Estado iraquí por una pequeña elite derivó en sucesivas rebeliones y convulsiones internas desde su formación y a lo largo del siglo XX. El desorden institucional del país y la multiplicidad de estructuras de poder superpuestas afectaron el proceso de toma de decisiones. Ambos procesos impidieron la formación de una identidad colectiva cívica vinculada al Estado y en su lugar reforzaron las lealtades locales. Sumado a esto, la continua injerencia externa profundizó las contradicciones y rivalidades internas. Grupos étnicos, como los kurdos, organizaron movimientos de resistencia en demanda de mayor representación política y autogobierno. El gobierno respondió reprimiendo las demandas y convirtiendo al estado en la representación de un poder despótico. El nacionalismo kurdo hizo de Kirkuk una pieza central de sus fundamentos políticos y la principal reivindicación frente a los diversos gobiernos iraquíes. El artículo argumenta que la disputa alrededor de Kirkuk, con su composición multiétnica, representa el principal fracaso de las elites iraquíes en sus intentos por construir una unidad política coherente. La invasión estadounidense posicionó a Kirkuk como el asunto central de la política kurda y el tema más delicado de la política iraquí, exacerbando el faccionalismo y la etnitización del discurso político. ; Throughout the 20th century, the Iraqi state was captured by a narrow elite triggering intermittent rebellions and internal upheavals. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo analizar la conformación del movimiento cultural y político kurdo en Turquía y Siria a través de la interacción de los dos actores políticos más relevantes en este proceso: el Partido de los Trabajadores del Kurdistán (PKK) y el Partido de la Unidad Democrática (PYD). En el texto se destacará la influencia kurda en la zona transfronteriza del norte de Siria y el sur de Turquía durante el periodo que comprende la década de los años veinte y treinta del siglo XX, así como algunos hechos ocurridos en los primeros años del siglo XXI, con el objetivo de identificar las causas históricas y coyunturales que explican cómo los proyectos de autonomía tanto en Rojava como en Bakur se han influenciado mutuamente y cómo juntos han desafiado la idea del Estado Nación moderno en los países donde operan. El objetivo central del artículo es ponderar cómo los kurdos en Turquía encontraron más obstáculos para el desarrollo de sus proyectos autonómicos en Bakur, mientras el movimiento sirio de Rojava, que fue influenciado por el mismo PKK y las ideas de Abdullah Öcallan, logró organizarse de manera más exitosa a pesar del contexto autoritario que enfrentaba. La hipótesis a defender es que fue el discurso seguritizador del Estado turco el factor primordial que evitó un desarrollo autónomo de los kurdos en Bakur, el cual no sólo logró revertir la agenda política del PKK en Turquía, sino que después de 2015 también buscó extender la contención de los proyectos kurdos en el norte de Siria ; This paper analyzes the shaping of the Kurdish cultural and political movements in Turkey and Syria through the interaction of the two most relevant political actors in this process: The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and the Party of the Democratic Unit (PYD). This text highlights the Kurdish influence in the cross-border area of northern Syria and southern Turkey during the twenties and thirties of the twentieth century, as well as the early years of the twenty-first century. The objective of this text is to identify some historical and conjunctural causes that explain how autonomy projects in both Rojava and Bakur have influenced each other, and how they have challenged the idea of the modern Nation State in the countries where they operate. The main objective of the article is to know how the Kurds in Turkey found more obstacles to the development of their autonomy projects in Bakur, while the Syrian Rojava movement, which was influenced by the PKK itself and Abdullah Öcallan's ideas, managed well to organize its successful model despite the authoritarian context it faced. The hypothesis to be defended is that Turkish State's security discourse was the main factor that prevented an autonomous development of the Kurds in Bakur, which not only managed to reverse the PKK's political agenda in Turkey, but also after 2015, sought to extend containment of Kurdish projects in northern Syria

Uno de ellos, Iraq, en plena situación de post-conflicto, intenta definir su nuevo modelo territorial, donde el Kurdistán iraquí va a ser una cuestión clave. Esta región disfruta de una relativa calma y un elevado nivel de autogobierno desde 1991, pero actualmente encuentra en Turquía uno de sus mayores obstáculos para conseguir su total emancipación. Turquía, con pretensiones territoriales y petroleras en el nuevo Iraq y 12 millones de kurdos, permanece expectante a cualquier cambio en el país vecino. Este artículo examina de forma empírica las interacciones de seguridad entre el Gobierno Regional del Kurdistán y el estado iraquí. La evidencia discursiva muestra cómo a pesar de que la cuestión kurda en Iraq entró en un proceso de gradual normalización política o deseguritización a partir de 1991, al mismo tiempo muchas dimensiones del tema permanecieron seguritizadas. Usamos la figura de las narrativas polarizadoras para mostrar los efectos negativos de estas acciones en el largo plazo. Concluimos que la (de)seguritización ha introducido más violencia en la política iraquí y creado condiciones para la prolongación del conflicto entre los kurdos y el gobierno central en Bagdad ; This paper empirically examines the security interactions between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Iraqi state. The discursive evidence shows that despite the Kurdish question in Iraq began a steady process of political normalization –desecuritization- since 1991, several dimensions of the issue remained securitized. We use the figure of splitting speech acts to show the long-term negative effects of these actions. The migrant crisis brought migration to the political agenda and exposed the weaknesses of the European Unión, FRONTEX and Member States in the border management mechanisms. In 2015 more than 1.5 million illegal border crossings were detected at external borders, representing an all-time peak of arrivals, with Turkey being one of the main entry points, with around 800,000 irregular migrants, and more than 500,000 Syrian nationals. The European Union reached an agreement with Turkey to end to the irregular migration flow, resulting in a decrease in irregular entries into Europe. However, the number of arrivals is growing again and, although the situation cannot be compared to that of 2015, the upward trend is consolidating. This situation is aggravated by the start of the Turkish military offensive against the Kurds in Syria and by President Erdoğan Recep Tayyip's threat to break the agreement with the EU and irregularly let in more than 3.6 million people. The European priority for solving the migration crisis has focused on stabilization with ad hoc measures rather than long-term planning. ; La crisis migratoria llevó la migración a la agenda política y puso de manifiesto las debilidades de la Unión Europea, de FRONTEX y de los Estados Miembros en los mecanismos de gestión de las fronteras exteriores. En el año 2015 se detectaron más de 1.5 millones de cruces fronterizos ilegales en las fronteras exteriores, lo que representó un pico histórico de llegadas, siendo Turquía uno de los principales puntos de entrada, con alrededor de 800.000 migrantes irregulares y de nacionalidad siria mas de 500.0003. Con el fin de frenar el flujo migratorio irregular la Unión Europea llegó a un acuerdo con Turquía consiguiendo una drástica disminución de las entradas en Europa. Sin embargo, el número de llegadas está creciendo de nuevo y, aunque la situación no puede compararse con la del año 2015, la tendencia al alza se está consolidando. Esta situación se agrava con el inicio de la ofensiva militar turca contra los kurdos en Siria y por la amenaza del presidente Recep Tayyip Erdoğan que de romper el acuerdo con la Unión Europea y dejar entrar irregularmente mas de 3.6 millones de personas. El derrumbe del régimen autoritario de S. Hussein, consecutivo a una intervención militar llevada a cabo de manera «relámpago» en el primer semestre de 2003 por una (incierta) coalición de países bajo el mando militar de Estados Unidos, ha suscitado un vacío de poder y una inestabilidad interna multidimensional susceptible de afectar a los países limítrofes, en particular por la cuestión trans-regional de las comunidades chutas y kurdas. Dicha inestabilidad, que se desarrolla con trasfondo una multiplicación de los ataques armados contra las fuerzas extranjeras estacionadas en Irak, cuestiona y altera la imagen de «victoria» promovida por la administración del presidente G.W Bush quien anunció de manera triunfalista y apresurada la finalización de las principales operaciones militares el primero de mayo de 2003. ; The downfall of Saddam Hussein's authoritarian regime following a lightening-fast military intervention in the first half of 2003 by an (uncertain) coalition of countries under the military command of the United States has created a power vacuum and multidimensional internal instability that may well affect the neighboring countries, especially due to the transnational nature of the Kurdish and Shi'ite communities. Said instability, which is developing along with an increasing number of armed attacks against the foreign forces stationed in Iraq, both questions and alters the image of «victory» promoted by the administration of G.W. Bush who quickly and triumphantly announced the end of the «main military operations» on May lst, 2003.

La intervención militar turca en el Kurdistán sirio, conocido como Rojava, demuestra que la guerra civil siria presenta una gran cantidad de aristas. El objetivo de la misma es crear una zona de seguridad donde reasentar a más de dos millones de refugiados sirios y expulsar del lugar a las milicias kurdas, opositoras al gobierno de Ankara. El presente artículo tiene como finalidad ahondar en el uso de encuadres utilizados por la prensa escrita española a la hora de cubrir la intervención militar turca en el país árabe. A través de una metodología clásica y cuantitativa, análisis de contenido, se ahondará en los discursos mediáticos de la prensa nacional con el objetivo de investigar qué narrativas están teniendo mayor peso. Esta contribución intenta explorar si las cuestiones humanitarias presentan mayor relevancia que las explicaciones centradas en la seguridad. ; The Turkish Military Intervention in the Syrian part of the Kurdistan region, known as Rojava, shows that the Syrian Civil War presents a great number of different sides. The objective of the intervention is to create a safe zone where two million syrians could be resettle, expelling from the area the kurd militias that oppose the government in Ankara. The present article wants to deep in the use of frames used by the Spanish written press when covering the Turkish military intervention in the Arab country. Through a classic and cuantitative methodology, named analysis of content, this paper will go into the mediatic discourses of the national press with the purpose of exploring what explanations are having a biggest importance. This contribution tries to explore if the humanitarian question weights more heavily that the ones focused on security.

Este texto introduce y resume las contribuciones del monográfico que tienen por objetivo reflexionar sobre las diferencias y similitudes de los contextos, proyectos y prácticas político-discursivas de algunos movimientos kurdos en Oriente Próximo, particularmente en Irán, Iraq, Turquía y Siria. Las contribuciones son diversas en objetivos y metodología, pero parten de un eje de análisis común que cohesiona al monográfico que es la paradójica relación existente entre los kurdos y el Estado Nación moderno, en un contexto marcado por el autoritarismo, el militarismo y la intervención extranjera en nuestra región de estudio. A partir del análisis de elementos locales, regionales y transregionales, este texto retoma la existencia de una kurdidad como una categoría analítica que justifica el estudio de nuevas dinámicas transfronterizas en Oriente Próximo y presenta el monográfico como una contribución importante al campo de los Estudios kurdos publicada en lengua española ; This short paper introduces the special issue and summarizes the papers included here, promoting insights on the differences and similarities of the contexts, projects and political-discursive practices in some Kurdish movements in the Middle East, particulary in Iran, Irak, Turkey and Syria. The academic contributions are diverse in objectives and methodology, but share a common and cohesive framework to study the Kurdish question through the paradoxical relationship between the Kurds and the modern Nation State. Based on the analysis of the local, regional and transregional factors, in a context of authoritarianism, militarism and foreign intervention, this text recover kurdicity as an analytical category to justify the study of new cross-border dynamics in the Middle East, presenting the spetial Issue as an important contribution in Spanish language to the field of Kurdish Studies

The herein article discusses how the emergence of an independent Kurdistan represented a threat to the societal security of minority groups living in the Northern of Iraq. For this purpose, it deals with the case of the province of Nineveh, where the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) implemented policies of assimilation, co-option and intimidation to ensure the support of minorities to their independence project. In addition, it explores how the emergence of the Islamic State was an important factor for the increase of Kurdish power in the region. Finally, it examines some scenarios faced by Kurds since the end of the self-proclaimed Caliphate. It is concluded that the project of an independent Kurdistan represents a conflicting and unstable scenario for both the States in the region—which have a large Kurdish population—and the different societal groups, especially from northern Iraq. ; El presente artículo analiza cómo el surgimiento de un Kurdistán independiente representó una amenaza para la seguridad societal de los grupos minoritarios que habitan en el norte de Irak. Para lo cual, aborda el caso de la provincia de Nínive (Irak), en donde el Gobierno Regional del Kurdistán (GRK) implementó políticas de asimilación, cooptación e intimidación para garantizar el apoyo de las minorías a su proyecto independentista. Además, explora cómo la aparición del Estado Islámico fue un factor relevante para el aumento del poder kurdo en la región. Finalmente, se examinan algunos escenarios que enfrentan los kurdos tras el fin del autoproclamado califato. Se concluye que el proyecto de un Kurdistán independiente representa un escenario conflictivo e inestable tanto para los Estados de la región —que tienen una importante población kurda— como para los diferentes grupos societales, en especial, del norte de Irak.
