Ausgehend von der historischen Entwicklung der seit 1948 von Großbritannien unabhängigen Insel Ceylon, die sich 1972 zur Republik Sri Lanka erklärte, stellt der Verfasser des Handbuchartikels zunächst die Geschichte der Gewerkschaftsbewegung dar. Im weiteren wird auf Größe und Struktur der Gewerkschaften sowie die rechtlichen Grundlagen für deren Aktivitäten eingegangen. Neben den Schwerpunkten gewerkschaftlicher Tätigkeit befaßt sich der Autor noch mit den Arbeitsbeziehungen in Sri Lanka. Die gewerkschaftliche Politik im Lande konzentriert sich auf die Beseitigung der Arbeitslosigkeit und die Interessenvertretung der Plantagenarbeiter. Ergänzt wird die inhaltliche Darstellung durch Literaturhinweise und die Anschriften der Gewerkschaftsbünde. (KS)
