Politics, War and Diplomacy in late fifteenthcentury Italy: Machiavellian thoughts and Venetian examples
The essay discusses theoretical and practical aspects of politics, war and diplomacy in late fifteenth-century Italy, using Machiavelli's works as an example of theory, Venetian foreign policy as an example of practice. The attempt to present Machiavelli as a founding father of the Realist school of International Relations is considered and dismissed. Major features of Machiavelli's thought are treated: his vision of the intimate connections between foreign affairs, war and political life; his distinguishing power from force; and his grasp of the importance of reputation. The value of these as a guide to the politics of Italy between 1454 and 1494 is assessed, with particular reference to Venice, and to the merits and defects of Machiavelli's famous comparison between ancient Rome and Venice. The career of Roberto di Sanseverino is examined to show that one premise upon which that comparison was based, that condottieri were unreliable, was sometimes well founded.

Battesimo e battisteri nella Tarda Antichità. Ritualità architettura, spazio sociale. ; Baptism and Baptisteries in Late Antiquity. Ritual, architecture, society
; Baptism and baptisteries during the first centuries of Christian era have been largely treated in scientific literature, mainly from two different and autonomous perspectives: on the one hand, history of liturgy and theology, on the other hand, history of art and archaeology. Our aim is to combine these two approaches, by adding a third one, that of social history. This perspective deals with practical behaviours and mental attitudes that are generated within the society by the very existence of the baptismal ritual. The chronological frame which is considered goes from the 4th to the 7th c., a period in which the normative and institutional structure of the Church(es) is still developing. The sampling of the geographical areas under analysis considers mainly the Eastern Mediterranean, but also some of the Western regions, in order to be as much wider and representative as possible. The analysis includes the five patriarchal sieges (Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem) and several provinces: western Syria, Cyprus, Caria, Pamphylia, Lycia, Crete, Dodecanese (main islands), Palestine, northern Egypt, Macedonia, Thrace, Liguria, Flaminia and Sicily in Italy, Africa Proconsularis. The archaeological and topographical data, derived from the record of 436 baptisteries, have been related to the evolution of liturgy as well as to historical and social contexts in the various areas. Baptism, together with the thoughts and practices that are connected to it, and derived from it, has turn out to be fundamental in the transformation of social structures that takes place in Late Antiquity. It contributed, amongst other factors, to the process of slow change of the social schemes: Christianity gradually became a source of uniformity for collective identity, by bringing together different social strata on the base of the same ideals. This process of social "democratisation", not without contradictions, began with the general spread of baptism.

Late Antiquity Mérida: the apotheosis of a Christian city ; Mérida tardoantica: l'apoteosi di una città cristiana
Mérida, see of the Vicar of Hispania during the Late Empire, represents the best known case in the Iberian Peninsula of the transformation of a pagan city into a Christian city. Despite the lack of referential centralised powers during Vth and most of VIth century, Merida succeeded in preserving its preeminence within the Lusitanian province, while its bishop set himselp up as the metropolitan bishop with an ascendant even outside the province boundaries. An hagiographic text, the Vitae sanctorum patrum emeretensium, shows us the political, social and economical vitality of the town at the end of VIth century, and also the preponderance of the religious instances on public life, in which the basilica of Saint Eulalia, patron saint of the city, turns into the centre around which the everyday sociability revolves.

; Between the IV and VI century A.D., Central Europe underwent profound social changes, both in the borders of the Roman Empire and along its "barbaric" frontiers. A decisive element was the displacement of peoples from east to west. The study of late-antique migrations has always played an important role in explaining the historical transformation and the birth of contemporary European society, but many questions about this period are still unanswered, despite centuries of research. In the past, in order to distinguish the different ethnicities, the traditional "Barbaric" archaeology, mainly focused on the study of stylistic and technological attributes of the material culture found in the contexts of Necropolis, has scarcely explored the social aspects, interpersonal relationships between individuals and in general, the defining aspects of human biology. In the light of these critical issues and in order to try to answer some of these questions it was decided to undertake a multidisciplinary investigation integrating the mandible's morphological analysis, by using geometric morphometric techniques (GM), with the analysis of non-metric dental characters and chemical analysis of strontium stable isotopes, assisted by a scrupulous initial anthropological investigation. For this purpose, thirteen burial areas from three distinct regions of Europe (Italy, Croatia and Hungary were considered, with chronology ranging between the fourth and ninth centuries A.D., for a total of 733 skeletons. The results of the previous described analysis have been compared with historical and archaeological data, by making it possible to speculate about the biological distances between the individuals, their lifestyle and mobility, during a complex time in terms of biology and socio-politics and culture.

Costantinopoli Nuova Roma come modello della urbs regia tardoantica ; Constantinople, New Rome as model of Late Antiquity urbs regia
; The buildings and their spatial definition of Constantinople New Rome, seen as a magic reproduction of Rome, represent the example to be reproduced for those cities (and especially their courts), which aspired to become urbs regia or basileousa polis. The palace, the hippodrome, the streets, the porches, the thermal baths, the columns, the statues, which own magic and prophetic values, are the "common denominators" which define the development of the political ideology through urban ideology, from the Antiquity to the Renaissance.

Ethnic Identities and Christianities between Late Antiquity and Early Medieval Period ; Identità etniche e cristianesimi tra tarda antichità e alto medioevo
This paper aims to re-read Roman-Barbarian ethnicity as a cultural construct not least based on Biblical models viewed and interpreted as founded as well as authoritative instruments of self-definition. The study intends to overturn the traditional historiographical paradigm, according to which ethnicity emerges as a purely "Barbaric" construction in opposition to the Christian-Roman universalism. Starting from such a model, European history was often represented as a conflict between universalistic and nationalistic issues. According to A.'s analysis, the political role of ethnicity in Latin Europe doesn't emerge, at least partially, as a Barbarian "import". Far from representing an antithesis to the Universal Church, ethnicity assumes its politic role through Christianity and, more specifically, on the basis of exegesis as well as of re-adaptation of ethnic self-definitions well attested in Biblical texts.

Ravenna. Rise of a Late Antique Capital
The town of Ravenna, in northern Italy, today contains eight buildings listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, all dating between the fifth and the sixth centuries - a time when it was one of the most important cities of the Mediterranean. The Roman town underwent a major transformation at the beginning of the fifth century, from a small Roman 'Municipium' to an Imperial capital. This role called for new buildings of power, housing the Imperial Court and the related bureaucratic body, a Bishop's Palace and other monuments suche as the Circus. In addition this walls, churches and others community zones were created; all following late antique models such as Milan, the previous capital, and of course Constantinople. An expansion of Ravenna's infrastructures was also necessary, in particular new roads and sewer system, a port, warehouses, and aqueducts. From the fifth century to the Early Medieval period Ravenna flourished as one of the main centres of North Italy and during this period its archbishop played an important role in the religion, politics and economy of the region. This paper seeks to illustrate the archaeological evidence related to the 'longue durée' of the urban centre of Ravenna as a fulcrum of power and control.
