The review describes the conceptual and content side of the collection of articles, mainly authored by English-speaking specialists that focus on the development of Rome and Constantinople between the 4th and the 6th century. The reviewer emphasizes the topicality of the collection as related to the subject of research. He also points out the arguable nature of issues that have to do the infrastructure formation of early Constantinople and the development of historical typography of Rome in late antiquity. Special attention is paid to the articles that have a new interpretation of the social and political aspects of the two capitals of the late antique society and their social influence on the conservation of structures originating from the classical polis and the western civitas as societies of free citizens enjoying full rights. ; Рецензия раскрывает концептуальную и содержательную стороны сборника статей преимущественно англоязычных специалистов, анализирующих развитие Рима и Константинополя в IV–VI вв. Указана актуальность избираемой исследователями тематики в рамках заявленной сборником проблемы. Подчеркнута спорность решения вопросов, касающихся формирования инфраструктуры раннего Константинополя и развития исторической топографии позднеантичного Рима. Особое внимание обращено на статьи, по-новому раскрывающие социально- политические аспекты функционирования обеих столиц позднеантичного общества и их социальное влияние на консервацию структур, восходящих к классическому полису и западному «цивитас» как коллективам полноправных свободных граждан.

This review describes the conceptual and content parts of the collection of articles authored by English-speaking specialists in antiquity and the history of the early Middle Ages, analysing the peculiarities of development and functioning of certain realities of the Mediterranean civilization of the 3rd–8th centuries. The author emphasises the relevance of the research in question as regards the issues considered in the collection. Additionally, the author points out the fact that the solutions of some issues are debatable, namely, the manifestations of stability and even growth of sociocultural traditions of late antiquity in the context of conversion to Christianity and adaptation of the legacy of antiquity by the Barbarian world. The reviewer pays close attention to the articles of the collection using a new approach at comparing the religious and cultural aspects of functioning of the Western Roman, early Byzantine, Western Barbarian, and early Muslim worlds in the context of their interaction on the basis of traditions of late antiquity. ; Рецензия раскрывает концептуальную и содержательную стороны сборника статей преимущественно англоязычных антиковедов и специалистов по истории раннего Средневековья, анализирующих особенности развития и функционирования конкретных реалий средиземноморской цивилизации III–VIII вв. Указана актуальность избираемой исследователями тематики в рамках заявленных сборником проблем. Подчеркнута спорность решения вопросов, касающихся проявлений стабильности и даже роста социально-культурных традиций поздней античности в обстановке христианизации и освоения варварским миром античного наследия. Особое внимание обращено на статьи сборника, по-новому сравнивающие религиозно-культурные аспекты функционирования западно-римского, ранневизантийского, западного варварского и раннего мусульманского миров в условиях их взаимодействия на базе традиций поздней античности.

This review describes the conceptual and content side of the collection of articles by Western experts, focusing on the study of the work of Porphyry, a Neoplatonic intellectual from Late Antiquity. The researchers mostly focus on Porphyry's treatise Contra Christianos and the cultural environment associated with this work. The reviewer emphasises the relevance of topics chosen by the researchers in the framework of the problem of the so-called "Christian threat" raised by Porphyry and other supporters of the concept. Also, the reviewer points out the controversy of solving issues concerning the relationship between different texts of Porphyry and texts of his contemporaries related to such a problem. Particular attention is paid to the review of the articles that reveal new religious and political aspects behind the functioning of the society of Late Antiquity as a relatively open social system, which pragmatically used the tools of vertical anti-Christian controversy to stabilise itself.

The review opens the conceptual and substantial parties of the collection of articles mainly American and German specialistes in antiquity, analyzing features of the form and functioning of a political mode of Roman empire the urgency of subjects selected researchers within the limits of the problem declared by the collection 4th century is specified. Argumentativeness of the decision of the questions, concerning mutual relations of the imperial power of an epoch dominatus with the social, property and political groups which interests should be taken constantly into consideration is underlined. The special attention is turned on collection articles, on new opening religious-political aspects of functioning of a monarchy of 4th century as open form of the military dictatorship pragmatically using for stabilisation of a society as toolkit of paganism, and Christianity. ; Рецензия раскрывает концептуальную и содержательную стороны сборника статей преимущественно американских и немецких антиковедов, анализирующих особенности формы и функционирования политического режима Римской империи IV в. Особое внимание обращено на статьи сборника, по новому раскрывающие религиозно-политические аспекты функционирования монархии IV в. как открытой формы военной диктатуры, прагматично использовавшей для стабилизации общества как инструментарий язычества, так и христианство.

The article considers the goals and results of the stay of Roman senators, who fled after the capture of Rome by the Goths in 546, in Constantinople. The study is based on the reports of Procopius of Caesarea, Liber Pontificalis and acts of the Fifth Ecumenical Council. After they had lost the patronage of the Gothic authorities and began to fear for their property due to hostilities in Italy, Roman aristocrats were looking for a way to maintain their former dominant position in the city. Going to Constantinople, the senators hoped to convince the Byzantine emperor to oppose the Goths and regain control of Rome, which would allow them to take back their privileged status. However, Emperor Justinian I tried to use their arrival for his own purposes. The ruler was busy with religious problems. He made an agreement with senators, according to which they pledged to take part in the 5th Ecumenical Council and to support the emperor's position in the dispute over the Three Chapters. In return, the aristocrats received the promise of the speedy liberation of Italy from the barbarians. Using a comparative and historical-anthropological approach, the author traces the influence of military operations in Italy and the forced resettlement of some senators to the East on the extinction of the Roman senatorial order. Senators' hopes for the restoration of the emperor's individual rule in Rome turned out to be in vain. Having conquered the Apennine peninsula, Justinian retained control of the former capital. As a result, the senators finally lost their previous power in Rome and the Roman senatorial order fell into decay. After the publication of Pragmatica sanctio, aristocrats acted as mediators, first between the emperor and the church, and then between the church authorities and the laity privately. © 2020, Perm State University. The article dwells on the semantically integral system of Southern Italy Russian reception in the heyday of Belle époque. Its connection with the European context dating back to Goethe and purely national features are shown. Based on Berdyaev's relevant texts, the imagological constants of the Silver Age 'Russian Italy' are reconstructed. Three different models of it are demonstrated, opposing the aesthetic line of Italy reflection in the mirrors of the arts, embodied by P.P. Muratov (Images of Italy, 1912): in the works of D.S. Merezhkovsky, M.A. Osorgin and I.A. Bunin. It is proved that they are united by an unexpected in the depiction of the bright Italian South antirhetoric, expressive asceticism, opposition to decorative redundancy and polemic in relation to the romantic apology of the 'Mediterranean Arcadia'. In the case of Merezhkovsky, this even laid the foundation for a special potential type of alternative poetics, which could but never managed to reach the center of the writer's artistic system.

Рассматриваются вопросы формирования первичных государств греко-римской классической Античности, особенности политической и социальной организации полиса и civitas, проявление общинных традиций в частной и общественной жизни полисного государства, способы интеграции греков и римлян в частные коллегии и союзы, сущность персональных отношений патроната – клиентелы и гостеприимства, а также религиозно-обрядовое и правовое оформление указанных институтов. Сделан вывод об историческом значении полисного государства, которое сохранило и развило общинные начала самоорганизации и самоуправления. Отмечается, что политико-правовые концепты Античности «демократия» и «республика» отразили эту идею народовластия в качестве основополагающего принципа жизнедеятельности греческого классического полиса и римской республиканской civitas. = The article deals with the problems of formation of the primary states of Greco-Roman classical Antiquity, the peculiarities of political and social organization of polis and civitas, the manifestation of communal traditions in the private and public life of a polis state, the ways of integrating Greeks and Romans into private collegium and unions, the essence of interpersonal relationships of patronage, clientela and hospitality, religious and legal formalization of these private institutions. The author assesses the historical significance of the polis state, which preserved and developed the communal principles of self-organization and self-government. Ancient political and legal concepts «democracy» and «republic» expressed the idea of the rule of the people as the fundamental principle of the vital activity of the Greek classical polis and the Roman republican civitas.

The problem of comprehension the function of the ancient Egyptian obelisks is connected with the issues of formation, functioning and development of the institute of kingship in ancient Egypt, which justifies the relevance of the case studies. There is still a consensus on the question of understanding the meaning of the erection of the obelisks by kings. There is no doubt that the obelisks are erection in pairs near the entrance to the temples. The article examines the inscriptions on the ancient Egyptian obelisks of the reign of the 18th and 19th dynasties, taking into account their better preservation and accurate attribution. The main purpose of this work is that the author sees the identified functions and characteristics. In the introduction, the author gives a brief historical overview of the issue and compares the position of the stories with the data obtained from the analysis of texts in the original language. Authors should obtain a definition of the concept of «obelisk» both in the Egyptian language and in other languages of antiquity and the Middle Ages, on the basis of which the author concludes that the designation of obelisks in Egyptian was originally associated with their property – luminosity. In conclusion, the author concludes that the obelisks are dedicated to the ancestor of the king (God or king) along the male lines, in the temple of which they were erected. One of the obvious functions of the obelisks, according to the inscriptions on them, was to imprint the royal name (one of the hypostasis of the royal soul).

This paper states that the monograph published E. A. Mekhamadiev, a researcher from St. Petersburg, is a fundamental study of the Later Roman military organization, with especial attention to the epigraphic and papyrological accounts. The use of these sources allows the author to reconstruct the history of specific military units, their spatial movements, participation in various military campaigns and wars, and changes in their ranks. Important is that Mekhamadiev examined the internal (organizational) structure of all regional armies of the Roman empire from 253 to 305 and not restricted himself to specific and narrow aspects of history of a particular province or country. The author of the book under present review has analysed the data related to both the eastern and the western imperial provinces, discovered close interrelations of the western and eastern provinces, and indicated permanent movements of the military units from the west to east and in the opposite direction depending on the geopolitical and home political situation. ; В статье отмечается, что рецензируемая книга петербургского исследователя Е. А. Мехамадиева является фундаментальным исследованием по военной организации позднего Рима, в котором сделан особый акцент на данные эпиграфики и папирологии. Их привлечение позволили автору реконструировать историю отдельных войсковых подразделений, их территориальные перемещения, участие в различных военных кампаниях и походах, изменения рангов. Указывается, что Е. А. Мехамадиев рассмотрел внутреннюю (организационную) структуру всех региональных армий Рима с 253 по 305 г., не ограничился исследованием отдельных и узких сюжетов, связанных с историей отдельно взятой имперской провинции или региона. Автор рецензируемой книги проанализировал данные как по восточным, так и по западным провинциям империи, выявил тесную взаимосвязь западных и восточных провинций, указал на постоянные перемещения войсковых подразделений с запада на восток и в обратную сторону в зависимости от геополитической и внутриполитической ситуации.

This research reveals the features of ideological, political, and partly social orientation of the anonymous compilations formed in Italy (most likely shortly after 636 AD) and known as Continuatio Prosperi Hauniensis, which were the mixture of a chronicle, a duplicate of excerpts from numerous consular lists of the Roman Empire, and a brief overview of the rule of the Ostrogothic and Lombard kings. The author's attention is focused on the composition of the part of the "Continuation of Prosper" beginning with the events of the mid-fifth century. It is shown that the records saved all the features of a late antique chronicle, though the content uncovers obvious signs of imperfection and confused and incomplete editing (especially in the sections describing the disappearance of the imperial power in the West). On the contrary, the notes on the Lombard Period are clear and consistent in conceptuality. The data in this section of the records are definitely compiled by a single author who worked in the seventh century, most likely in Pavia (the main residence of the Lombard kings), and sought to reflect in his work the need to reconcile contemporary Italian elite with the leaders of barbarian conquerors. According to this anonymous compiler, the stability of the situation in Italy no longer depended on the empire, but rather on the barbarian rulers, who were mostly skilled and pragmatic warriors and politicians. In contrast to a number of sixth and seventh century chroniclers and historians, the compiler does not share the views of Gregory of Tours, Isidore of Seville, and John of Biclar, who advocated the use of force as the main means to achieve stability. He was closer to the "pacification" policy personified by Pope Gregory the Great. ; Исследование раскрывает признаки идейно-политической и отчасти социальной направленности составленных в Италии (скорее всего вскоре после 636 г.) анонимных компиляций, известных как Continuatio Prosperi Hauniensis, но представляющих собой смешение летописи, дубликата отрывков из ряда консульских списков Римской империи, а также краткого обзора правления остготских и лангобардских королей. Показано, что записи сохранили все признаки хроники поздней Античности, хотя содержание документа обнаруживает явные признаки недоработки и путаной, незавершенной редактуры (особенно в разделах, посвященных описанию исчезновения императорской власти на Западе). Сообщения, касающиеся лангобардского времени, наоборот, четки и последовательны в своей концептуальности. Данные этого раздела записей явно скомпонованы одним автором, работавшим в VII в. скорее всего в Павии (основной резиденции лангобардских королей) и стремившимся своим сочинением отразить необходимость примирения италийской верхушки того времени с верхушкой завоевателей-варваров. Стабильность положения в Италии, по мысли этого анонимного компилятора, уже зависит не от империи, а от правителей варваров, которые в большинстве своем являются умелыми и прагматичными воинами и политиками. В отличие от ряда других хронистов и историков VI–VII вв., компилятор не разделяет взглядов Григория Турского, Исидора Севильского и Иоанна Бикларского, ратовавших за применение силы как основного средства для достижения стабильности. Ему ближе политика «умиротворения», олицетворяемая папой Григорием Великим.

В статье, на основе изучения публикаций советского периода, посвященных истории Римской империи и постримских государств в IV–VII вв., показано, какие представления о поздней античности, как особом историческом периоде, формировались в советской историографии с середины 1930-х до начала 1990-х гг. Современные ученые рассмотрение поздней античности как особого периода ведут от английских историков третьей четверти XX в. А. Джонса и П. Брауна. Автор приходит к выводу, что независимо от работ этих ученых в советской исторической науке формировалось собственное своеобразное представление об особом позднеантичном периоде римского и постримского мира. The article, based on the study of the publications of the Soviet period on the history of the Roman Empire and post-Roman states in the 4th–7th centuries, shows which ideas about late antiquity, as a special historical period, were formed in the Soviet historiography in 1930s – early 1990s. Modern scientists consider late antiquity as a special period relying on works by A. Jones and P. Brown, English historians of the third quarter of the 20th century. The author comes to the conclusion that irrespective of the works of these scientists Soviet historical science formed its own unique idea of this special Roman and post-Roman late antiquity period. ; Matrosov M. Рассматривается возможность выделения в социально-политической организации кочевых обществ Южной Сибири и сопредельных районов Центральной Азии эпохи поздней древности региональной элиты. Основой исследования послужили китайские письменные источники по истории хунну и археологические материалы, полученные авторами в процессе изучения памятников пазырыкской культуры (VI–III вв. до н. э.) на Алтае. В качестве маркирующих признаков региональной элиты кочевников следует обозначить «престижные вещи»: предметы импорта (шелк, китайские деревянные лаковые изделия), элементы костюмного комплекса (головные уборы, гривны, украшения). Несмотря на то, что состав и ценность инвентаря из погребальных объектов региональной элиты значительно уступает в масштабности «царским» курганам, они качественно выделяются среди остальной совокупности погребения кочевников. Использование в научном обороте категории «региональная элита» позволяет значительно расширить проблематику изучения общественной структуры номадов, рассмотрев специфику устройства и функционирования кочевой политии, а также взаимоотношения центра и периферийных регионов политических формирований кочевников Южной Сибири и Центральной Азии эпохи поздней древности.DOI 10.14258/izvasu(2015)3.2-08 ; The article considers the possibility to define regional elite in the socio-political organization of the nomadic societies of South Siberia and Central Asia in the late antiquity. The research is based on the Chinese written sources on the history of the Xiongnu and archaeological materials obtained by the authors during the research of the monuments of the Pazyryk culture (VI–III centuries BC.) in Altai. The signs which marked the regional elite of nomads could be "prestigious things": import goods (silk, Chinese lacquerware), elements of the costume (head-dresses, torcs, adornments). Despite the fact that the composition and value of the grave objects of the burials of the regional elite is much inferior to "royal" mounds, however, they qualitatively stand out from other burials of nomads. The introduction of the category of regional elites into scientific use can significantly extend the study of the problem of the social structure of nomads, consider the specifics of the organization and functioning of a nomadic polity, as well as the relationship between central and peripheral regions of the political units of the nomads of South Siberia and Central Asia in the epoch of late antiquity.DOI 10.14258/izvasu(2015)3.2-08

This review considers the conceptual and substantial sides of the work by the German scholar, analysing the relations between the imperial power and different social and political groups under the autocratic regime of Early Byzantium from the point of view of their form and content. The reviewer emphasises the topicality of the subject and the debatable character of the issues concerning the relations between the imperial authorities (forced to be based in Constantinople for the majority of time) and groups whose interests had to be taken into account. Special attention is paid to the ideas in the work in question that put forward a new interpretation of the religious and political aspects of Early Byzantium as a relatively open social system that pragmatically used the methods of vertical social dynamics to stabilise society. ; Рецензия раскрывает концептуальную и содержательную сторону монографии немецкого специалиста, анализирующего особенности формы и сущностные характеристики отношений между императорской властью и разными социальными и политическими группами в условиях авторитарного политического режима ранней Византии. Указана актуальность избранной исследователем тематики в рамках заявленной проблемы. Подчеркнута спорность решения вопросов, касающихся взаимоотношений императорской власти (вынужденной базироваться преимущественно в Константинополе) и групп, интересы которых прежде всего приходилось принимать в расчет. The article concerns the peculiarities of the political humour and satire within the framework of the contemporary Italian political culture. Due to the political crisis of the late 20th century the image of the Italian politicians has undergone severe alterations, being associated with negative stereotypes. Referring to the political humour and satire, the Italians endeavour to control the political power, reveal the government`s inefficiency and its discrepancy with the nation`s values and ideals. Appealing to the example of the political cartoons dedicated to the former Prime Minister of Italy M. Renzi, the author defines the influence of the sociocultural factors and regional features on the contemporary political humour and political culture of Italy. ; В статье рассматриваются особенности политического юмора и сатиры в итальянской политической культуре Второй республики. В результате политического кризиса конца XX в. в Италии сложилось наполненное отрицательными стереотипами отношение к власти. Посредством смеха итальянцы пытаются корректировать деятельность государственного аппарата, высмеивая его несовершенства, несоответствие национальным ценностям и идеалам. На примере политических карикатур, посвященных бывшему премьер-министру Италии М. Ренци, определяется, как социокультурные особенности и региональная специфика влияют на политический юмор и политическую культуру страны.
