We produce the first study to explore the effect of political money contributions on IPOs. Exploiting a hand-collected database, we show that both lobbying and PAC expenditure pay off on issue day as donors incur less underpricing, an effect that can be amplified by contribution size and strategic targeting of recipients. Investigating the causes in multiple channels, we also associate donor IPOs with negative offer price revisions and lower aftermarket volatility. Collectively, our results offer new empirical grounding to the information asymmetry theory.

This article focuses primarily on Ontario, identifying a number of the profession's allies and their advocacy effectiveness, under two main headings: The Ontario Chiropractic Association; and the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College during the period of 1902 to 2012. While part of our success in gaining recognition has been attributed to intense lobbying by the profession, here the public support of several labour unions is reviewed. The part played by various politicians, educators, entrepreneurs, legal counsel, academic administrators and historians is also discussed.

The war against online copyright infringement has been fought on a number of different fronts—via litigation against the peer-to-peer ("P2P") software providers who enabled it, the end users who engaged in it and, most recently, against the ISPs who provide the infrastructure that permits the data to flow. This last strategy has seen powerful content interests forcefully lobbying governments and ISPs worldwide to adopt so-called "graduated responses." The message has been that content owners shouldn't be responsible for policing infringement.

This paper studies equilibrium behavior in a class of games that models asymmetric competitions with unconditional and conditional investments. Such competitions include lobbying settings, labor-market tournaments, and R&D races, among others. I provide an algorithm that constructs the unique equilibrium in these games and apply it to study competitions in which a fraction of each competitor's investment is sunk and the rest is paid only by the winners. This paper investigates economic and political determinants of protection across the secondary (manufacturing) sector. Economic factors can be summarized by the infant industry argument and we expect industries which are relatively efficient compared to the rest-of-the-world to have low levels of protection. Moreover, the degree of protection should change as the relative efficiency of an industry changes over time. Political factors reflect pressure group politics: relatively inefficient industries may enjoy a great deal of protection because of political lobbying.

THE WORLD WIDE FUND FOR NATURE (WWF) IS PERHAPS BEST KNOWN FOR ITS FUNDRAISING EFFORTS IN SAVING RARE AND ENDANGERED SPECIES, ESPECIALLY IN TROPICAL COUNTRIES. LESS WELL KNOWN ARE ITS EFFORTS TO CHANGE PUBLIC POLICY USING AN ARRAY OF LOBBYING METHODS AND ADVOCACY TECHNIQUES. THE BACKGROUND TO THIS MORE OVERT POLITICAL INFLUENCING ROLE IS EXPLORED IN THIS ARTICLE USING THE EXAMPLE OF A FIVE-YEAR CAMPAIGN TO CHANGE SOME OF THE CRITICAL ASSUMPTIONS AND DIRECTIONS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION'S STRUCTURAL FUNDS. THE CASE STUDY DESCRIBES HOW ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS GAIN INFLUENCE AND AUTHORITY IN THE EU SYSTEM.

The article describes one physician's campaign to have heroin legalized for medical use as a painkiller. Funding and lobbying support from the public was marshalled by the author to put the heroin issue on the federal government's agenda. The Canadian cancer establishment generally fought the proposed reform and made many unfounded arguments. The government compromised by granting physicians the right to administer heroin, while tying up the process with such demanding red tape that almost no one bothers with the narcotic.

W artykule podjęto również próbę ustalenia miejsca podmiotów niepaństwowych w systemie instytucjonalnym Unii Europejskiej w kontekście wzrostu promowania polskiej racji. Oprócz wymiarów teoretycznych, artykuł ten oferuje praktyczny wgląd w funkcjonowanie polskich podmiotów niepaństwowych na poziomie europejskim, który rozwijał się w ostatnich latach. ; The main aim of the article is to show the deficits related to the defense of interests by non-state actors related to the Polish raison d'état. Moreover, the article presents the articulated and promoted interests of Poland at the European Union level. The article also focuses on non-state actors involved in lobbying at the European and national levels. The article also attempts to establish the place of non-state actors in the institutional system of the European Union in the context of increasing promotion of the Polish raison d'état. In addition to the theoretical dimensions, this article offers a practical insight into the functioning of Polish non-state actors at the European level, which has developed in recent years.
