FREEWAT is an HORIZON 2020 project financed by the EU Commission under the call WATER INNOVATION: BOOSTING ITS VALUE FOR EUROPE. FREEWAT main result is an open source and public domain GIS-integrated modeling environment for the simulation of groundwater quantity and quality, with an integrated water management and planning module. FREEWAT aims at promoting water resource management by simplifying the application of the Water Framework Directive and other EU water-related Directives. To this scope, the FREEWAT platform results from the integration in the QGIS Desktop of spatially distributed and physically-based codes (mostly belonging to the USGS MODFLOW family), which allow to get a deep insight in groundwater dynamics, taking into account the space and time variability of stresses which control the hydrological cycle. This is attempted in a unique GIS environment, where large spatial datasets can be managed and visualized. In this paper, a review of the tools/modules integrated in FREEWAT for data pre-processing and model implementation is provided. FREEWAT applicability was demonstrated through running 14 case studies, in the general framework of an innovative participatory approach, which consists in involving technical staff and relevant stakeholders (in primis policy and decision makers) during modeling activities, thus creating a common environment to enhance science and evidence-based decision making in water resource management.

Open Science is the new keyword in scientific research: sharing data and results to increase the quality, impact, and benefits of science. Sharing accelerates the advancement of knowledge by making it more reliable, more efficient, and more accurate. This process also improves usability and understanding by the society. This is affirmed by the European Union and this is what is required in the management of data and knowledge that is produced in projects funded by Europe. This approach has been fully implemented within the RaCHy (Radiotherapy Coupled with Hyperthermia) European project to which the National Centre for Radiation Protection and Computational Physics of the Italian National Institute of Research (ISS) participates. The management of Open Science aspects in the RaCHy project was developed by the ISS project unit using the Zenodo platform, one of the possible solutions for the dissemination and reusability of research data over time. There are rules and guidelines to be implemented and followed both in the sharing of data within the project and in the way in which the data produced are then available to the scientific community and society.

The contribution continues the research studies began in 1987 about the anthropization processes, considering the so call "crisis" as opportunity for a radical change of them, having its main base in the ecological vision of territory and city, in an holistic philosophy of social and spatial transformations, in coherence with the Landscape Florence Convention [1], particularly relevant for our country of the "100 town bells". Quoting the 2015 Letter Encyclical Laudato Sii for the Care of the Common House [2[, that goes far beyond the idea of cities as "public space" and underline the care of it, that is its management based on immediate actions, parts of strategies in the short, medium and long term. This proposed new philosophy refers also to scientific works requiring radical changes from a legal point of view in the relationship between man and nature as proposed by F. Capra and U. Mattei [3]) in the book Ecology of Law. Science, Politics, Common Goods. DOI: http://dx.medra.org/10.19254/LaborEst.17.09

The threat to the survival of many species, caused by emerging ecological crises, has favored the development of a new environmental awareness. In recent decades, especially in the most industrialized nations, an increasing participation of citizens in the collection of scientific data has also been recorded. The active involvement of society in different aspects of science has been defined by the sociologist Alan Irwin as "Citizen Science". Although environmental Citizen Science brings together the largest number of projects, the fields of application of this new way of doing science are innumerable. BioBlitz is one of the best-known examples of citizen science activities, aimed at monitoring the biodiversity of an area. The Maremma Natural History Museum, as part of its activities, regularly organizes BioBlitz on an annual basis, starting from 2013. During BioBlitz 2017 in the SPZ and SCZ "Monte Labbro and Alta Valle dellAlbegna" data were collected attesting the presence of 403 different taxonomic entities, of which 367 identified at the species level and 5 at the subspecies level. Six alien and 2 endemic species were identified. In terms of environmental legislation, 38 protected species and 7 endangered species were detected in the area. The most relevant aspect that emerges from the collected data is the consistent number of protected species. This confirms the environmental value of the area and the need for management and conservation plans for the entire site.
