This study examined the relationships between self-construal and verbal promotion. U.S. American college students (N = 196) completed Kim and Leung's (1997) self-construal scale. Forty-three students with extreme scores on the scale's two dimensions of independence and interdependence subsequently participated in a brief phone interview for the possibility of receiving an award of recognition and money. Participants' interview responses were content coded for the amount of self-promotion (extolling one's own attributes) and others-promotion (extolling significant others' contributions to self-success). Self-promotion was positively associated with an independent self-construal but negatively related to an interdependent self-construal. Others-promotion was positively associated with an interdependent self-construal but negatively related to an independent self-construal. The results highlight the importance of self-construal in predicting verbal promotion.
In July 2000, the PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party) lost the presidency of Mexico after 71 years of continuous rule. Research based on individual data obtained with surveys shows that important media effects occurred. Using aggregate data, in this article the author explores the effects of political advertising & media coverage on preferences during the Mexican presidential campaign. Data on voter preferences are taken from results of a trial ballot question in public opinion polls. Data on advertising are measured in gross rating points. Data on media coverage are taken from the monitoring of newscasts on the two major networks. OLS regression models are developed, with preferences as the dependent variable & campaigning differentials as the independent variables. Based on aggregate data, this research shows that in Mexico's 2000 presidential campaign, exposure to political communication led to persuasion, & news appears to have been more important than ads. Political communication was a unified process where ads & news presence acted together in a very interesting fashion, "bounding" each other in periods of major changes in preferences but with news effects prevailing over ads. Qualified news differentials accounted for 20% of the variance in preferences, & ad differentials accounted for 8%. This media effect occurred through a cumulative process where ads & news coverage acted together. Tables, Figures, Appendixes, References. Adapted from the source document.
Oryginalność i wartość poznawcza: projekt, którego wyniki prezentowane są w niniejszym artykule, stanowi wstęp do badań nad tworzeniem struktur komunikacyjnych w serwisie Twitter.
; Introduction: The link between journalism and photography is a fertile one, and for decades a good part of the international photojournalistic establishment has revolved not so much around newspapers as around these international prizes. Of all of them, the most prestigious is the World Press Photo, which in 2021 celebrated its 66th edition. Methodology: Our proposal explores the evolution of the photographic discourse of these awards over the years, and to do so we have compiled and filtered by technical criteria the winning works of all the editions and we have analyzed them using a system based on eight variables (some of which have required software, such as colorimetry and color dominants). Results: Regardless of the technology and aesthetic trends during these seven decades of awards, there are patterns such as the type of shot, the type of posing or the framing that are repeated with insistence, as well as a very particular colorimetry. Discussion: in a media context highly sifted by technology and the reformulation it has brought about in photography, the photographic discourse of the WPPs remains faithful to an institutional vision closely linked to world politics. Conclusions: After analyzing the 66 winning pieces, we conclude that fidelity to their visual discourse in the World Press Photo - with the implications that this entails - is above the visual and creative freedom of the photojournalists, or the adaptation to the historical, political and social context in which they were photographed.
Conversation, the exchange of opinions between two parties, was analyzed as a function. of the parties' topical experience, attitudinal polarization, and three behavioral processes. Two experiments consisting of fifteen-minute conversational interactions showed different effects of experience and behavioral process factors on frequency of conversational statements. Behavioral processes were shown not to function by a similarity mechanism. Implications for thinking about conversation were drawn.
Brochures play a significant role in governmental public information provision. Every year many brochures are distributed to inform, instruct or persuade people. These brochures may benefit from a systematic design process, including applied research such as pretesting. Among communication professionals, the importance of pretesting is practically undisputed. Readers from the target audience are assumed to provide valuable insights into whether a document really works. Organizations therefore increasingly try to include a pretest in the design process of important documents. Various pretest methods have been developed and are being used in practice. However, little is known yet about the merits and restrictions of the available approaches. This book provides a framework for scholarly research into pretesting, and presents a series of studies into the validity of one particular pretest instrument: a combination of the plus-minus method and a semi-structured questionnaire. This is one of the prevailing pretest approaches in the Dutch public information sector. The validity of the pretest instrument is assessed in two complementary ways. First, the question is addressed as to whether a revision on the basis of pretest results actually leads to an improvement in the functional quality of brochures. Second, a study is presented in which text and subject-matter experts judge the importance of pretest results. The pretest instrument appears to yield a large amount and a great variety of reader feedback, which in a subsequent revision may contribute to significant improvements in the effectiveness of brochures
