Medicine & the ideas by which an era lives have an intimate relationship. The dominant idea of man in each culture determines & is determined by medicine, whose prime concern must be with the person. The idea of man has undergone successive interpreations in the primitive Greek, Medieval, & modern worlds. These interpretations have profoundly affected the Med behavior of each era, & an understanding of this behavior is incomplete without reference to the dominating cultural ideas. Some of the intellectual disquietude of modern man has its roots in the insufficiency of modern culture & medicine to cultivate the common ground between them. Each struggles with but cannot fully incorporate man's personal & societal dimensions. The gradual transformation of the classical & medieval philosophies of man under the influences of exp'al sci & modern philosophy has tended to produce a loss of identity. Are we on the verge of a fuller definition of the nature of man- consonant with the traditional view but expanded & fulfilled by the dominant note in our culture, that of sci? AA.

La médecine humanitaire intéresse tout soignant mais demeure en général un concept flou, de par l'absence de définition réelle, et l'hétérogénéité de sa pratique qui n'en fait pas une discipline au sens propre. En effectuant une synthèse de la littérature écrite par des humanitaires, nous pouvons mieux comprendre les nombreux enjeux propres à cette pratique, et les difficultés générales qui entravent la réalisation des actions humanitaires. Ainsi nousprendrons conscience de l'influence historique de l'Occident et l'impunité du Bien qui auréolent l'humanitaire, et rendent plus ardue la tâche d'effectuer une critique objective des missions. Aussi, des enjeux financiers, politiques, idéologiques, de santé publique interfèrent avec les objectifs humanitaires d'une Organisation Non Gouvernementale, et accroissent les risques de détournement de l'aide.Les réflexions et dilemmes qui ont accompagné les missions antérieures dans l'histoire de l'humanitaire participent à nourrir l'élaboration d'outils pour mieux penser dans ces situations toujours complexes.De plus, la médecine humanitaire met en lumière certains aspects de la médecine générale. Il est intéressant de confronter la médecine humanitaire et la médecine générale à travers leurs définitions, leur histoire, puis leurs pratiques. Nous constaterons que les situations de précarité en France s'apparentent à des terrains humanitaires ; puis nous verrons en quoi certains enseignements tirés de l'histoire de l'humanitaire sont applicables à la pratique de la médecine générale, notamment à propos de la relation médecin-patient, de la formed'engagement qu'implique toute médecine pour son patient, de l'influence hygiéniste sur la gestion de la santé publique, et des difficultés d'indépendance du médecin vis-à-vis des champs politiques et économiques.L'humanitaire remet au centre le pouvoir dangereux de la médecine à gouverner les vies, et place chaque médecin devant sa responsabilité de citoyen du monde.

Erik Noji, mentioned, tongue in cheek, Noah as the first disaster manager during a lecture in 2005. The canonical description of "The Genesis Flood" does describe Noah as a master planner and executer of an evacuation of biblical proportions. After gaining knowledge of a potential catastrophic disaster he planned and executed an evacuation to mitigate the effects of the "Genesis Flood" by building the Ark and organizing a mass exodus. He had to plan for food, water, shelter, medical care, waste disposal and other needs of all the evacuees. Throughout history, management of large disasters was conducted by the military. Indeed, the military still plays a large role in disaster response in many countries, particularly if the response is overseas and prolonged. The histories of emergency preparedness, disaster management and disaster medicine have coevolved and are inextricably intertwined. While disaster management in one form or another existed as long as people started living together in communities, the development of disaster medicine took off with the emergence of modern medicine. Similar to disaster management, disaster medicine also has roots in military organizations.
