Zwei Artikel zur Lage im Nahen Osten: der erste analysiert die Auswirkungen der politischen Veränderungen in Osteuropa und der Sowjetunion auf den Mittleren Osten u.a. unter zwei Aspekten: die direkten Auswirkungen auf die Politik in der Region und die Frage, inwieweit diese politischen Veränderungen Vorbild für die Region sein könnten. Der zweite Artikel untersucht die Gründe und politischen Konsequenzen der steigenden Popularität islamischer Fundamentalisten in den Ländern des Nahen Ostens und Nordafrika, wie sie sich z.B. deutlich bei den Wahlen in Algerien gezeigt hat.
