p. 1 ; columns 3–5 ; 49 ½ col. in. ; A reverend visits Utah and attempts to provide an accurate view of Mormonism. Despite reports of wealth, most Mormons are poor. The people, especially women, are intellectually inferior to the average American. There are no schools in Utah Territory, and the people are oppressed under the despotic authority of Brigham Young. Women are humbled and crushed under polygamy. Polygamy will be difficult to destroy, and it will not end until the government enforces laws and punishes offenders.;

The judge ruled that the daughter be handed over to the mother, as her husband already had another wife. The daughter, however, refused to go with anyone but her husband––and did so.

[p. 1] ; column 3 ; 14 col. in. ; John Hardy, an ex-Mormon, writes a letter to the editor reinforcing that the official reports about Mormons are valid: the Mormons are prepared to overthrow the U.S. government to return political power to the American Indians and to themselves, are ready to defy all laws, and have sworn vengeance upon all states that have persecuted them. Polygamy, or "licentiousness run mad," is preached and practiced enough to "almost chill the heart's blood," with Heber Kimball and P.P. Pratt as prime offenders. Hardy is prepared to substantiate all his claims.
