In its attempt to pursue an elusive Modernist vision of development, the Chávez government (1999-2013) in Venezuela concocted a fresh andvery binary roster of "us" versus "them." In its counter-hegemonic project,in Gramscian terms, Venezuela has promoted a subaltern Orientalism thathas featured the demonization of the United States and its closest allies, anda rather abrupt bonding with countries and associated cultures with whichit had little previous contact, as exemplified by the cases of China, Iran andRussia. Edward Said (1978) defined Orientalism as a concept with referenceto imperialist powers vis-à-vis developing countries. However, in the caseat hand, one observes a refreshing twist: here one observes Orientalism onthe part of developing and non-Western nations in relation to a counterhegemonicstruggle vis-à-vis dominant Western countries, or what I termSub-altern Orientalism. The article shall address this incipient phase ofidentity construction in Venezuela regarding the Chinese, Arab, and to alesser extent, Russian presence.
; This article analyzes Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen´s and Vicente Fidel López' respective theories on the origins of the Tupi and Peruvian Indians. In particular, it puts forward that the historicist approach of the authors' theories can be attributed to the linguistic contributions of orientalism. The principal aim of this work is to shed light on the connections, in both authors' works, between indigenism, linguistics, historiography and political plans for Argentina and Brazil.
Beyond the differences between the intellectual and political practices of Dipesh Chakrabarty and José Aricó, the work of both authors represent a common way of intervening in the discussion about Marx's Orientalism. Simultaneously with Said's work and the debates generated by it, the Indian historian and the Argentine intellectual developed a reading of Marx focused on the ambivalences of the German thinker regarding non-European societies. Differentiated from the hypothesis of a necessary Eurocentrism in the configuration of Marxist theory, the two authors endeavored to demonstrate the need for Marxist concepts to account for peripheral realities. In the case of Chakrabarty, rescuing the narrative of capital but opening the Marxist corpus to the problem of historical difference. In the case of Aricó, destabilizing the Marxist tradition through the recovery of a Marx interested in the specificities of non-European societies. Through these operations, Chakrabarty and Aricó developed a critical movement within Marxism that involved maintaining a materialistic position but also opening up to national and regional singularities.

The article shall address this incipient phase ofidentity construction in Venezuela regarding the Chinese, Arab, and to alesser extent, Russian presence.
; Bushido: The Soul of Japan, by Inazo Nitobe (1862-1933) is an example of a native's pioneering work to make the Japanese culture known in the West and to explore its values and concepts through the ethical code of the Samurais. We examine the influence of this work on the image that western people has of Japan in the twentieth Century and the influence of the context and pretext: both, in the source text and in the first translation to the French by Charles Jacob. The French translation of 1927 appeared in the interwar period characterized by the rise of the militarist propaganda as well as the flourishing of Japanese studies, which since the XIX century have had a deep influence in the French culture.
; [eng] The limits of the role of translation within the fabric of Arab thought in its classical and modern periods are the primary focus of this study. In both periods, translation proved instrumental in the transmission of ideas and played a key role in shaping the foundations of Arab thought. This was not merely about the activity of translation per se, but also about a cultural movement integrated into the paradigms of two overarching projects: the Arab cultural "registrography" of the ninth, tenth and eleventh centuries, and the later cultural project of the Arab Renaissance or Naḥda. A host of ideological, political, religious and linguistic factors had an important impact on the two projects and led the earlier one to carry on a continuing leadership role in Arab cultural life from the dawn of Islam into the modern era. As a result, the transmission of the sciences of antiquity was necessarily subjected to cultural control by the Salaf, as were later translations of innovative scientific knowledge arriving from Europe. In addition, cultural construction in the Arab–Islamic world took place in the shadow of the intermediary role played by other cultures, such as the Syriac and Persian cultures in the classical period and the French and Ottoman-Turkish cultures in the modern era. This cultural diversity, which developed amid both centripetal and centrifugal forces, produced translation phenomena such as the appropriation of knowledge and the Arabicization of texts in translation. Similarly, it spurred the emergence of new currents of thought, such as European Orientalism and Arab Occidentalism, which employed translation as a practical resource to define the East and West, respectively. The present study, which adopts a critical analytical method, seeks to examine the limits of the complex process of translation in order to identify the traits that are important for understanding how the diverse strands of Arab–Islamic thought fit together in its classical and modern periods without losing sight of the cultural legacy of the Salaf.
; The presence of the idea of humanism in Edward Said's work is one of the most important problem of his thinking. In fact, the presence of both the reference to "humanist" legacy and a style of thinking rooted in French Post-structuralism appears as an unsolvable conundrum. In order to fully understand Saidian humanism it is important, first, to situate it in the postcolonial background. In particular, it must be grasped the relation between humanism and anti-colonial struggles. From a theoretical point of view, the best way to study the meaning of humanism is to start from Humanism and Democratic Criticism, that allows to analyse retrospectively the whole of Said's works, showing the hidden coherence of his thought. Said's theoretical elaboration, always very concise and sometimes unsatisfactory, is grounded mainly on two assumptionas inspired by the Neapolitan philosopher Giambattista Vico. First, the idea that human beings make their own history, and since they make it they can know it. Second, is that the "human nature" is constitutively undetermined. These assumptions permit to understand Saidian humanism, from a philosophical point of view, as a "humanism without man", i.e a humanism that renounce to elaborate any onological-anthropological idea of "Man". This idea cannot be "fixed" making it more inclusive, but the idea of "humanity" may be the basis of a non-binary and non-discriminative postcolonial thinking, if we accept the idea that humanity cannot be defined by any type of apriori rationality.
In this reflection work, I discuss and problematize the strategies and discursive representations of "the Haitian" in some news about the contagion of Covid-19 in Chile. From the concepts of standpoint, nomadism, orientalism and other conceptualizations elaborated by critical studies of race and whiteness (SWC), I analyze the political production of cultural difference in the media, and its performativity for the conformation of subject-positions of the me and the other, as well as its effects of stigmatization and exclusion of racialized migrant communities. The essay is crossed by the critique of integration policies and the rescue of the affirmative power and subversive of others and the monstrous as keys to a queer politics of the race. This paper argues that Mohamad Bouazizi's self-immolation was a Pragmatic Act aimed at escaping Biopower formulated by the authoritarian Tunisian regime for the purpose of securitizing Structural Violence. It is a sensational form of suicide that awakens emotions and inspires resistance. Human emotions, not technological innovation, had the power to change regimes. Twitter and Facebook are methods of communication that helped transmit this rage, but did not cause these revolutions. Passions, lit by Bouazizi's flame, diffused naturally by human interface and may have occurred without such technological advances. This paper is divided into three main parts. The first is to theorize the act of self-immolation. The second theorizes about the power human emotion has on the international arena. Lastly, it highlights the discursive power of scholarship. Fundamentally, this paper seeks to illuminate these thoughts on Bouazizi's self-immolation, as well pursue self-reflexivity that exemplifies the subjectivity of intellectuality. It presents a novel argument as it describes what dominant theories of International Relations omit: how ordinary people influence the international politics. The Arab Revolutions were caused not solely by the emergence of social networks or news media, but by emotional diffusion. Raw human anger forms the uniting force that assembles and organizes oppressed populations. By using these concepts and describing this and other cases of self-immolation, one discovers a pattern: self-immolation is an extraordinary method of suicide that persons without agency use to securitize structural violence by means of human emotion. As such, emotions are an integral, but understudied part of International Relations.
; Even though the influence that Greek culture, and in particular, its philosophy, served on Cicero is well known, it has not been highlighted his insistence on showing the superiority of Rome also in areas such as oratory or political thought. Using as theoretical framework E. Said's Orientalism , we aim to interpret Cicero in postcolonial terms, i.e. as an author who wants to legitimize the rule of Rome, using her cultural superiority as the main argument.
; In recalling the extensive intellectual, literary, political and vital experience of Edward Said, one of the greatest figures of Political Thought of the 20th century, a word invariably recurs: compromise. His extensive work and intense academic and political activity constitute one of the greatest individual efforts carried on in contemporary age to reach solutions of compromise so as to avoid conflicts of unpredictable consequences through all sort of initiatives: from the abstract analysis of those of purely intellectual character to the personal commitment with the so-called "down-to-earth" ones; from a keen political activism to the renewed symbolism of mixed cultural societies. Compromise in every possible way (vital, intellectual, cultural, social, political, religious, even musical) is the key-word to understand the singular value of the Palestinian Edward Said.
The article examines the political discourses employed by conservatives in two cases of civil war in nineteenth-century Ecuador, the Crisis of 1858-1860 and the Restoration of 1882-1883. In both cases, conservatives drew on the vocabulary of classical republicanism to establish a contrast between the sovereign people or the nation and an oppressive tyranny. Thus, references to ancient Roman dictators or emperors were prevalent. Alternatively, the binary opposition between an enslaved people seeking to free themselves from an oppressive tyrant could also be couched in orientalist terms, as opposition to a sultan and his janissary corps. Such a construction of the political field delegitimated the regime in power and allowed for the establishment of a broad coalition to unseat it. In addition, the article explores how the political actors in the context of these intrastate conflicts conceived the social fact of civil war and the role of external actors who intervened in the conflicts. ; The article examines the political discourses employed by conservatives in two cases of civil war in nineteenth-century Ecuador, the Crisis of 1858-1860 and the Restoration of 1882-1883.
