On 9 May 2007 East Timor, or Timor-Leste, elected a new president. The winner is the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jose Ramos-Horta. He defeated Francisco "Lu Olo" Guterres of the ruling Fretelin party, with 69% of the votes as compared to his rivals 31%. The new president inherits a country stricken by poverty & regional divisions which boiled over last year in deadly riots. The situation between Easterners & Westerners of Asia's poorest nation remains tense until today, but did not erupt into violence again. Main issues of the campaign were development & security. The two-round election was described as free & fair by international observers. The loss of Fretelin is a clear indication that its dominant position in the political landscape is in dispute. Against this background the author examines the implications of the current elections on the wider Timorese political system. References. Adapted from the source document.

Osttimor in der Krise
In: Südostasien aktuell: journal of current Southeast Asian affairs, Band 25, Heft 4, S. 35-45
After East Timor was hailed as a success story of nation-building in the twenty-first century
the country descended into chaos and turmoil in the recent months. Since the end of April
different factions of the security forces are fighting each other and communal violence
is plaguing the capital Dili. In response to this outbreak of violence the government of
Timor-Leste had to call for international military help. This article provides an overview
of the recent events from February to mid-June 2006. It argues that the main reasons
behind the current crisis lie in a failed recruitment policy of army and police personnel,
an inappropriate crisis-management of the national government, a damaging dispute over
historical merits between people from the west and the east of the country, and a common
discontent among many Timorese with the development process after independence.
Furthermore, there is a power struggle within the government, aggravating the crisis.
