Pakistan : le verrouillage
In: Le monde diplomatique, Band 31, Heft 365, S. 12-14
ISSN: 0026-9395, 1147-2766

In: Politique internationale: pi, Heft 119, S. 157-168
ISSN: 0221-2781
The results of Pakistan's legislative elections on February 24 reflected voters' rejection of General Musharraf as well as their hope for change. For the new prime minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, who belongs to the party of the late Benazir Bhutto, assassinated in December 2007, the task will be far from easy. He has established a list of priorities for his government, while at the same time making it clear that he cannot perform miracles, particularly economic ones. Will the new government be able to meet the expectations of the Pakistani people? Will it have sufficient resources to tackle the immense challenges that lie ahead? Will it be able to translate its declared intentions into a redefinition of its relationship with the United States & its role in the "war on terror"? Will the army really renounce its role in politics? The months ahead will surely provide some answers. Adapted from the source document.
L'IMAGE BROUILLEE DU PAKISTAN

The elimination of Ben Laden, which underlined Pakistan's duplicity in the fight against Jihadist groups, has led to a cooling in relations between Islamabad and the United States. In this difficult context, the country is seeking new allies, starting with European countries, from whom it expects economic aid. It wants to increase its exports to the euro zone and attract more French investors. The task is daunting, however. Pakistan's international image is catastrophic, due to attacks against Christians, collusion between the ISI (the main intelligence agency) and certain terrorist movements, and serial terrorist attacks. Questioned by Emmanuel Derville about these thorny issues, Prime Minister Yousouf Raza Gilani is at something of a loss. It is true that he has very limited leeway in the fight against terrorism. In fact, the whole system depends on an army and intelligence services which he doesn't control and who are only accountable to themselves. Adapted from the source document.

La malediction afghane du Pakistan
In: Politique étrangère: PE ; revue trimestrielle publiée par l'Institut Français des Relations Internationales, Heft 2, S. 335-344
ISSN: 0032-342X
The United States' involvement of Pakistan in the Afghan war has proved destabilizing for Pakistan, due to the demographic composition of its population as well as its army. As this war goes on, it continues to threaten the regime & to remove its legitimacy. The only solution now could be that Pakistan withdraws from the Afghan conflict, on the basis of an agreement among the Afghan parties thus hinting at the end of NATO involvement.
