The freedom potential of modern societies, above all the justification of political authority, is today linked to a democratically constituted order. What is meant by the idea of being democratic seems, however, to be anything but clear. Is it only a question of representing the people through elections, ballots, and political parties, or does it include institutional culture, the division of powers, and the legal regime within a community? A "philosophy of the republic", as developed in this volume's contributions, shows that the current "dominance of the democratic" falls short of accounting for the independent significance to the republican self-organisation of state and society.
; Within the last ten years, sociologists of time discussed several processes of societal and political acceleration that deeply influence the shape and scope of democratic politics. This paper discusses how political philosophy can confront the problem of acceleration and defend the possibility of democratic self-government. The sociological analysis of acceleration is discussed by reference to the influential work of Hartmut Rosa. According to Rosa, modern societies are functionally differentiated. Different subsystems fulfil different functions and each subsystem develops its own functional logic and "time rhythm", i.e. its own speed of decision-making. The process of decision-making can be accelerated, but only to a certain degree and depending on the specific nature of the subsystem. As a consequence, different subsystems possess very different speeds of decision-making: while high-speed decisions are possible in economics, financial markets and science, the political system cannot be accelerated to a similar degree. Rosa concludes that democratic politics therefore loses its influence on other subsystems operating with higher speed. It mainly reacts to decisions made elsewhere, but does no longer effectively shape society. Important theories within current political philosophy, e.g. theories of deliberative democracy, propose reforms of political systems that render politics more inclusive and participatory, but will lead to forms of decision-making that are far more time-consuming. Such theories are too abstract and remain unrealistic as long as they provide no convincing answer to the diagnosis of acceleration. This paper develops such a two-stage answer that aims to defend the possibility of an effective "politics of time" in order to preserve those temporal scopes that are needed for democratic decision-making. First, a premise that is central to Rosas argument will be analyzed: it relies on a strong interpretation of functional differentiation, which can be criticized and replaced by an alternative interpretation. Based on this proposal, we will, second, explore two instruments of decision-making sunset legislation and compromise and one policy field global politics that illustrate the agenda of an effective"politics of time". ; (VLID)3250621
Tekst razmatra Tezu o kraju filozofije, vrlo popularnu u kontinentalnoj tradiciji. ; The paper explores the Continental End-of-philosophy Thesis according to which philosophers should abandon the traditional philosophical reflection in favor of participating in more concrete theoretical-cultural practices, possibly marked by strong political engagement. It offers a historical-interpretative genealogy of the Thesis. The most unpredictable development in its history came with the fusion of the two streams: the politicized idea of abolishment of philosophy became coupled with the poetic thinking line, and the newly formed couple achieved a spectacularly high status, undergoing several transformations as a sequel. The final form of the Thesis stresses the participation in politically relevant cultural-artistic practices as the ultimate destination of philosophy. The paper suggests that this interesting route has ended in a quite disastrous result, an appeal to abolish philosophy in a dispersed array of politico-cultural practices, many of which quite ephemeral. The historical part explains the result and places it in wider context.
This chapter discusses three liberal philosophies of ownership: right libertarianism, which advocates an expansive conception of private property and which holds that legitimate and strict rights to such property can emerge through the voluntary production and exchange of self-owning individuals on the basis of initial privatizations of external resources that can be very unequal but nevertheless just; left libertarianism, which modifies the right libertarian position by insisting on a (more) egalitarian initial distribution of external resources; and democratic liberalism, which makes all property rights subject to democratic judgements guided by principles of social justice which express an understanding of citizens' common good. The chapter discusses the implications of each philosophy for cooperatives and mutuals and for the place of public policy in promoting these kinds of enterprises and related institutions.
