Science and arts, apparently, would be in opposite sides of the spectrum of the human knowledge. A closer look, however, reveals a relationship of more proximity than detachment. Photography is one of the areas that allows to point that the boundaries between this two fields of knowledge are less evident than we can imagine. That is discussion we make in this text, by analyzing the use of photography in the search of the expansion of the human knowledge about the Universe.
The starting point of this article is the realization of "Primeira Exposição Fotográfica de Motivos Belorizontinos", exhibition organized in 1953 through the partnership of a collective of amateur photographers and the Municipality of Belo Horizonte. Our interest is to understand how the vision of the amateur photographer is directed to the city, what is their reach, their conditioning and of course, what images result from this association. In this regard, we need to analyse the photography in parallel to other cultural initiatives supported by the government in the period, as well if it is possible to associate the pictures with a specific political project. The discussion around the exhibition from 1953 would also approach the universe of political propaganda, the relationship between architecture, government and urban life, and questions connected to the visual culture and cultural circularity.
The article analyzes the photoreports with images of "favelas" from the O Observador Econômico e Financeiro magazine, between 1942 and 1953, when the photographer Mozar Alves da Silva was part of the editorial team. Founded in 1936 by Valentin Rebouças, O Observador Econômico e Financeiro was a magazine specialized in social and economic analysis, in context of develpmentalismo. In the 1940s, the magazine incorporated part of the graphic innovations introduced by O Cruzeiro, giving greater prominence to photographs in its reports to document the country's economic transformations. The theme of favelas was the subject of reports that deal with the urban modernization of the Federal Capital. The photographs reiterate the myth of the Favela in Rio de Janeiro and dramatized discourses and stigmas of urban poverty from the debate on "social marginality".
"By examining the work of a large number of photographers of immigrant families, the author documents the social uses and artistic dimensions of photography in Brazil from approximately 1890-1930. Supplemented with testimonies of travelers and artists such as Richard Burton and Jean Baptiste Debret, who describe everyday life in 19th-century Brazil. Also uses methods of visual anthropology to achieve a better understanding of historical photography. Includes bibliography and many reproductions"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58
This paper presents researches carried out from 2011 to 2018, in the sertão of Alagoas, and were focused on literacy and culture actions, developed in the sertão community during the period of the civil-military dictatorship (1970-1985), based on Oral history, Alberti (2008) and Bosi (1994), privileging interviews and photographs as sources. These reports have as purpose to present the memorialistic narratives, about several Alagoas' sertões, with emphasis on the education and culture of the people of the countryside. These narratives go against official history, which reinforces the stigmas about this region, led by the project of colonial domination that is perpetuated in the hegemonic discourses currents of our country even in nowadays, and constantly fights for the domination of powers and knowledge. The oral and visual sources brought new reflections in relation to the place – Alagoas' Sertões – and made us realize that resignifications were possible, even during the military dictatorship.
This article aims to reflect on migratory flows and the political role of the image using the war in Syria as a reference. Hamza Al-Ajweh's photograph titled "A Syrian child walks down a street past the rubble of destroyed buildings in the rebel-controlled city of Douma in the Eastern Ghouta enclave outside Damascus", taken on March 8, 2018, and published for the first time at the Los Angeles Times, will be used as a point of reference for the discussion and analysis proposed here. The complexity of displacements in this specific context of war leads us to design Syrian mobility after the beginning of the war in 2011, understanding that this complexity goes far beyond the formal definitions used by international agencies. For a closer understanding of the debate, we designed the discussion in three parts: a brief contextualization of the conflict in Syria, which began with the Arab Spring and continues until today. This socio-political contextualization serves here as a backdrop for discussing not only generic migratory categories but to help better understand people, movements and the demand for new categories and visual reflections that go beyond current perspectives. And in the last part, we will discuss how the image of the photographer Hamza Al-Ajweh helps us think about multiple political and transformative aspects of the picture.

; This essay explores a certain aesthetic-political configuration in a photograph of a street rally on June 20, 2013, at Paulista avenue, São Paulo. This image heralds a distribution of the sensible (Rancière, 2005) in movement, that will be explored through a collection of photographs of street protests from 2013 to 2018. Those images trigger countless questions about a new geometry in the forms of political representation, and about the changes in the modes of subjectivation, indicating disputes over the compositions and distributions instituted in the forms of contemporary political action.
