Offers an analysis of the effects of economic factors on voting behaviour in the United Kingdom. Notes differences as results are compared with United States findings. Unemployment and inflation, for example, seem to be much more important in the United Kingdom. White aggregrate results are strong and the individual-level results weak in the United States; in the United Kingdom the situation is practically reversed. (Abstract amended)

This book deals with 18 voting procedures used or proposed for use in elections resulting in the choice of a single winner. These procedures are evaluated in terms of their ability to avoid paradoxical outcomes. Together with a companion volume by the same authors, Monotonicity Failures Afflicting Procedures for Electing a Single Candidate, published by Springer in 2017, this book aims at giving a comprehensive overview of the most important advantages and disadvantages of procedures thereby assisting decision makers in the choice of a voting procedure that would best suit their purposes.

This book provides an evaluation of 18 voting procedures in terms of the most important monotonicity-related criteria in fixed and variable electorates. All voting procedures studied aim at electing one out of several candidates given the voters' preferences over the candidates. In addition to (strict) monotonicity failures, the vulnerability of the procedures to variation of the no-show paradoxes is discussed. All vulnerabilities are exemplified and explained. The occurrence of the no-show paradoxes is related to the presence or absence of a Condorcet winner. The primary readership of this book are scholars and students in the area of social choice.
In this paper, we analyse how Politics, Power and Gender are represented in the European television series Borgen (Denmark) and Le Baron Noir (France). Borgen was shown between 2020 and 2013 and its main protagonist, Birgitte Nyborg, is a candidate for a small political party that later becomes Danish Prime Minister. Le Baron Noir is a French series (2016-2020) whose main protagonists are Philipe Rickwaert and Amélie Dorendeu, prominent militants of the French socialist party and candidates for the presidency. The two fictions focus on media coverage and the professionalization of politics; the complexity of decision-making; the contradictions between realpolitik and morals, as well as the personal challenges facing political actors, namely women. The aim of the article is to identify similarities and differences between the two series in the fictional and political aspects considered gender-based aspects of the exercise of power. To contextualize the analysis, the study traces a brief history of television fiction shown in Portugal, with an emphasis on politics and gender issues. The methodology used is essayistic and is based on the trajectories of the female protagonists, from pre-defined categories, based on principals of the narratology theory.

The first comprehensive study of plastics, from the moment they were invented to the present day Expands the existing research on the materiality of plastic, considering it as both a disposable and durable productAn essential read in times of environmental and health crises, when humanity must find new ways of existing and transform, among other things, our culturePacked with insight from 24 contributors across 17 chapters Plastics, Environment, Culture and the Politics of Waste examines plastic as a distinct cultural, political, and environmental phenomenon. It outlines the intricate relationship with plastic that humanity has been building over the course of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, drawing on examples from history, the arts, and literature, as well as examining the place of plastics in the current health, environmental, and energy crises. The aim of this book is to reveal the complex nature of plastics, from their rapid incorporation into our advancing ways of life, to the reenvisioning of plastics' role in human life and how, through abundant production, consumption, and disposal of plastics, humanity has initiated a toxic invasion of natural environments and human and nonhuman bodies. Bringing together various perspectives from the humanities, this edited collection contributes to the ongoing research on plastics and petrocultures and emphasizes the crucial significance of addressing the plastic crisis through culture

The wording of political messages is known to affect voting behavior, including judgments about whether or not candidates will be elected. Yet the question remains whether voting behavior can be influenced by fine-grained grammatical details of political messages. In this paper, two studies examined how subtly different grammatical forms in descriptions of political candidates' past actions can affect attitudes about electability. Specifically, participants read about a senator who was seeking reelection and then indicated whether they thought the politician would be reelected. In Study 1, the senator had done either negative or positive actions, and these were described using imperfective (wasVERB+ aspect. In Study 2, the senator had done a negative and a positive action, one of which was described using imperfective and the other with perfective aspect. Results revealed that imperfective descriptions of negative actions resulted in greater confidence that the candidate would not be reelected. Imperfective descriptions also led people to think that the candidate had done more negative action. When a negative and positive action were described together, grammar again influenced electability such that people reasoned in line with whatever action was highlighted by imperfective aspect. In both studies, subtle differences in grammar influenced whether people thought a political candidate would be reelected. These findings provide novel insights about how language can shape thought in the political realm. Adapted from the source document.

Electronic version excludes material for which permission has not been granted by the rights holder ; This thesis examines the shifting relationship between the state and its subjects with regard to responsibility for and entitlement to care. Using Malaysia as a case study the research engages with international medical travel (IMT) as an outcome of the neoliberal retrenchment of the welfare state. I offer a critical reading of postcolonial development strategies that negotiate the benefits and challenges of extending care to non-national subjects. The research draws from relevant media, private-sector and governmental documents and 49 semi-structured, in-depth interviews with IMT proponents and critics representing federal, state and urban governmental authorities, professional associations, civil society, private medical facilities and medical travel agencies in Malaysia's principal IMT regions (Klang Valley, Penang and Malacca). Across four empirical chapters, the thesis demonstrates how 'Malaysia' gets positioned as a destination within a range of imagined geographies of care through a strategic-relational logic of care and hospitality. I argue that this positioning places 'Malaysian' subjects and spaces into lucrative global networks in ways that underscore particular narratives of postcolonial hybridity that draw from Malaysia's 'developing country', 'progressive, moderate Islamic' and 'multiethnic' credentials. In considering the political logics of care-giving, I explore how the extension of care can serve as a place-making technology to re-imagine the state as a provider and protector within a globalising marketplace in which care, increasingly commodified, is tied to the production of new political, social, cultural and economic geographies.

Explores the role and impact of the Internet on politics; potential changes to the relationship between the state and society, and prospects for democracy and increased political participation; theoretical, North American perspective. Summary in English.
The first major study of the historical writings of religious dissenters in England between the 1690s and the 1790s, this book redefines the way we understand religious and political identities in the eighteenth century. Dissenting Histories provides a synoptic overview of the development of religious dissent in England between the Restoration and the early nineteenth century, using Dissenters' writings to open up new and different perspectives on how the past was perceived in this period. These writings are located within the wider political culture and the author explores how the long shadow
