Looking at the internal ANC politics, their interaction with the economic sphere and the styles of government, the leadership has deeply changed between the Mandela era (1985-1994), the Government of National Unity (GNU) period (1994-1996) and the Mbeki "network" (1997-2004). ; L'histoire politique du leadership du Congrès national africain (ANC) est caractérisée par la succession de quatre générations et la consitution de trois réseaux. L'examen des luttes politiques internes à l'ANC, des interactions avec les milieux économiques et les styles de gouvernement révèle que la structure des cadres du parti a profondément changé entre l'ère Mandela (1985-1994), la période du Gouvernement d'Unité Nationale (GNU) et le réseau 'Mbeki' (1997-2004).

Since 2000, the French Politics Groups of APSA and PSA have been working in close
collaboration, thanks to PSA/APSA financial support and the leadership of Robert Elgie
(Dublin City University), Andrew Appleton (Washington State University), and Amy Mazur
(Washington State University). The major goal of this collaboration is to strengthen the
study of French Politics by bringing together research communities on both sides of the
Atlantic.

The purpose of this presentation is to examine the relationship between leadership, rhetoric, and ethics. I have specifically chosen to examine Margaret Thatcher's leadership as demonstrated in her speech "The Lady's Not for Turning." I have also used examples from her political career and personal life to examine whether leadership is limited only to a position of power. Understanding the relationship between leadership, rhetoric, and ethics can help us develop these skills in ourselves as well as being able to identify them in our current and potential leaders. To formulate a rubric for these skills, I studied Thatcher's speech, as well as choices made and other things said throughout her political career and personal life. Through this research, I determined that an acceptable rubric for leadership is a person's ability to unite people with different views to pursue a common goal; for rhetoric, not only as spoken and written words must be taken into account, but also as the actions taken by a person; finally, ethics provide the foundation on which rhetoric and leadership are built and can work hand-in-hand. Upon drawing up this rubric, I reviewed the information I had found in my research. Through her leadership, she was able to unite a country going through difficult times, she was consistent in her words and actions throughout her life and career, and all of her choices were made based on the ideals she had been raised on and held her whole life. Holding Thatcher to this rubric proved that she was an effective leader.

Given the increasing rate of anthropogenic climate change and the resulting climate impacts that communities around the world will be coping with over the next century, it is becoming increasingly important that communities, cities, and regions begin to develop climate action plans that will assist them in coping with climate impacts. As a result, it is becoming evident that understanding how to effectively develop a climate action plan (CAP) and engage a community in the climate action planning process is a question at the forefront for many municipalities. This research utilized case study to examine the process the City of Imperial Beach engaged in to draft its CAP in an effort to understand the strengths the city was able to leverage and challenges the city faced. A chronological time-series was developed to assist in understanding the critical events that must take place in order to develop a CAP. Findings revealed that the CAP process in Imperial Beach was a years' long effort championed by city council members and pushed forward by city staff and community members. The central themes found in this case study were community engagement, collaboration, environmental justice, and political polarization. Finally, the findings of this case study were viewed through the lens of complexity leadership theory in order to draw conclusions about the leadership needs in the CAP process.

It is well documented that there has been significant change in the methods of political party leadership selection in recent years. It is now estimated that close to half of the parties in Western democracies use some form of 'primaries' for this purpose. However, research suggests there is marked variance in the methods used among parties that have adopted more inclusive processes. Using two qualitative comparative case studies, New Zealand Labour and the Australian Labor Party, this article identifies the main organizational decisions that stem from the choice to expand the leadership franchise. In doing so, we explore the range of options open to parties and examine the rationales supporting each of these. The relationship between the type of reform process undertaken and the decisions made is also explored.
