Burkina Faso since 1991: between political stability and democratic illusion" aims to project in the heart of the regime of the Fourth Republic. The foundations of the dominance of the post-transition political elite are examined through the strategy of conquest of political power and electoral legitimacy by organizing the first multiparty elections. President Blaise Compaoré gradually set up a system of domination locked where the possibilities of democratic change are dwindling for his political opponents. This control regime Blaise Compaoré requires resources that are available in-house resources and a directory of international legitimacy that is now President Blaise Compaoré a major player in the political game sub regional levels. Cette mainmise du régime de M. for more than a decade, the international community seems to have placed its hopes for political stabilisation in South-East Europe in the organisation, under international supervision, of electoral elections. Over the years, however, these electoral consultations have mobilised a decreasing number of voters. Many arguments have been put forward to explain the high rates of abstention, dissilsions due to reforms with high social costs, clientelary practices of partisan elites, and even the excessive frequency of calls for popular arbitration. Beyond these findings, it seems that nobody has considered questioning one of the main assumptions of democratisation policies in the East, namely the assimilation of voting to a democratic 'potion', which is intended to bind citizens to their elected representatives in the act of delegation of authority itself and, therefore, to promote popular support for democracy. There is, however, a crisis in voting today in its capacity to give political elites a mandate and legitimacy. Partly disqualified, in regions under international administration, by outsourcing decision-making to those in charge of the international community, governments are also weakened by their inability, in times of macroeconomic austerity, to propose to their electorate political projects that generate social dividends. Thus, the 1990s saw an increase in alternation without voters feeling that they had alternatives. Therefore, the miracle of the conversion, through election, of individual preferences into collective choices favouring allegiance to established systems no longer works. The repetition of electoral procedures, which is simply a behavioural treatment, will not be sufficient to solve the problem.

The purpose of this thesis is to study the relationship between financial integration, political openness and growth in developing countries. In fact, political reforms and financial liberalization was the slogan of the international financial institutions which conditioned the granting of financial aid to the implementation of certain reforms in favor of democracy and more respect of human rights in addition to more financial integration. Our empirical investigation covers a sample of 108 developing countries between 1984 and 2008 and uses both static and dynamic panel data estimation in addition to the new causality test in heterogeneous panel. Our results show that financial liberalization positively impact growth directly and through indirect channel like Investment, trade and macroeconomic stability. It also favors financial development and promotes human capital. Even though, democracy doesn't directly influence growth, it has an indirect positive effect on it through favoring international trade in addition to financial and human capital development. Otherwise, political instability negatively affects growth directly but also indirectly through decreasing investment and increasing inflation. Finally, our results suggest the existence of a bidirectional relationship between financial integration and democracy. In the other side, the relationship between financial integration and political stability is more specific and depend upon regionals characteristics of the country.

French municipal elections in 2001 have shown, beyond few spectacular exceptions, a rather high level of political stability. This article at first identifies the main reasons for such a stability, then explains why these reasons play a growing role in the local political life. Two models are distinguished: the fief & the bastion. Local political configurations tend nowadays to favor the first one. 3 Tables, 19 References. Adapted from the source document.

The main objective of this research is to show how the abundance of natural re-sources creates economic and political dysfunctions as ilustrated by African countries. This study is based on four essays. The first essay examines empirically about 36 African countries, the determinants of longevity in power. The second essay analyzes the effect of fragmentation in 45 African countries, with particular emphasis on political stability. The third essay deals with the effect of border disputes by conducting an empirical study of the DRC and its nine neigh-boring countries. Finally, the fourth essay focuses on the macroeconomic effects of the type of political regime in the DRC. We use several types of econometrics and data sources adapted to each of the situations mentioned. We achieve the following key results: (1) dependence on oil and minerals positively impacts longevity in power in Africa, and human capital reduces the chances for an African head of state to stay long in power. (2) fragmentation negatively impacts political stability. (3) the mining resource rents increase border conflicts in the DRC (4) The consequences of the type of political regime and the abundance of natural resources increase the macroeconomic instability in the DRC.We suggest that the promotion of the education sec-tor should be at the heart of government strategies and therefore a priority and the strengthe-ning of constitutional rules regarding elections.

This paper examines the empirical relationship between remittances and economic growth in post-Soviet states, and the role that political stability plays in this context. Using Feasible Generalized Least Squares to tackle group heteroskedasticity and serial correlation in panels, we find that remittances have a significant negative correlation with the receiving countries' economic progress. Besides, this relationship is contingent upon the political stability the country enjoys.
