The social and legal relevance of racial passing appears to be fading as we ostensibly enter a color-blind, post-race era. During the "Age of Obama," the notion of passing in our multi-racial society seems to many to be antiquated and unnecessary. As the nation has moved beyond state-sanctioned racial discrimination, many believe that the country also has moved beyond the need for a legal dialogue on racial passing and ambiguity. This "retreat from race," exemplified in part by the apparent declining significance of racial passing, proclaims that the state no longer should consider race when interpreting the law or incorporating democratic values of equality and opportunity. This Essay, however, argues that the continued phenomenon of racial passing can be utilized as a conceptual vehicle to destabilize and de-legitimatize the post-racial agenda.

This article is a critique of the notion of post-postmodernism. It analyzes the main characteristics of post-postmodernism in relation to postmodernism, from which the latter rises. Also, it establishes a connection among neoliberalism, globalization, and post-postmodernism, as a means to access to the economic and political context that justifies the emergence of such post-postmodern cultural logic. In the same way, it is criticized strongly the role of post-postmodernism as an instrument to reconceptualize humanities and the social sciences in order to intensify consumerism and convert humanities in a mere ideological approach, which legitimates the financial capitalism and the American neo-conservatism. ; Este artículo es una crítica al concepto de post-postmodernismo. En él se analiza las características fundamentales del post-postmodernismo con respecto al postmodernismo, en cuanto este último es el origen del primero. Asimismo, se establece la relación entre neoliberalismo, globalización y post-postmodernismo, como un medio para acceder al contexto económico y político que justifica la emergencia de la lógi- ca cultural post-postmoderna. International audience ; Depuis une dizaine d'années environ, le champ des objets dits « connectés » (à Internet) a fait son chemin dans notre quotidien (domotique, wearables, etc.). Fréquemment qualifiés « d'intelligents », ces derniers se situent à l'intrication du design produit et de la programmation. Pourtant, alors que le vocabulaire de l'intelligence et de la connexion semble impliquer des valeurs d'objectivation et de partage, les objets qui sont désignés sous ce terme se caractérisent trop souvent par le fait que leur « centre de commande » (Gilbert Simondon) est en fait une « boîte noire » où « l'individu devient seulement le spectateur des résultats du fonctionnement des machines » (Gilbert Simondon). Reliés à des « applications » numériques, les objets « connectés » ne semblent exister que parce qu'il est loisible de les fabriquer – comme le montre avec ironie le compte Twitter Internet of Shit ou des séries comme Black Mirror qui dénoncent leurs problèmes de sécurisation et d'obsolescence de ces produits (Tristan Nitot, Mathias Rollot).Dès lors, comment penser des démarches de design qui ne se contentent pas d'explorer de nouveaux « possibles » technologiques juste parce qu'ils existent ? À rebours d'une technique instrumentalisée, nous souhaitons, dans cette communication, examiner des directions de travail plus soutenables permettant de ‹ ménager des espaces de liberté › et de multiplier ce faisant les occasions de pilotage ou d'orientation (Norbert Wiener, Michel Foucault) permettant à chacun de compter pour soi » (Pierre-Damien Huyghe). Nous nous demanderons alors s'il est envisageable de qualifier ce travail de « post-numérique » (terme qui, chez Grégory Chatonsky, désigne un mouvement artistique), au sens où le numérique, désormais partout (Lev Manovich), est devenu un « milieu technique » qui reconfigure d'autant insidieusement plus notre quotidien que ses enjeux sociopoliques sont laissés sous silence dans les promesses des discours marketing (Evgeny Morozov). Une telle initiative implique une visée politique du design (William Morris, Annick Lantenois, Alessandro Mendini), à même de dégager des modes de négociation et de co-construction permettant d'habiter collectivement notre époque.

As a road map for a structural transformation of socially and ecologically self-destructive consumer societies, the paradigm of sustainability is increasingly regarded as a spent force. Yet, its exhaustion seems to coincide with the rebirth of several ideas reminiscent of earlier, more radical currents of eco-political thought: liberation from capitalism, consumerism and the logic of growth. May the exhaustion of the sustainability paradigm finally reopen the intellectual and political space for the big push beyond the established socio-economic order? Looking from the perspective of social and eco-political theory, this article argues that the new narratives (and social practices) of postcapitalism, degrowth and post-consumerism cannot plausibly be read as signalling a new eco-political departure. It suggests that beyond the exhaustion of the sustainability paradigm, we are witnessing, more than anything, the further advancement of the politics of unsustainability - and that in this politics the new narratives of hope may themselves be playing a crucial role.

The 2008 election of President Barack Obama represents a halcyon moment in U.S. history. President Obama's election begs a critical question: whether his nationwide landslide victory catapulted the United States, with its sordid racial past, into a truly post-racial place as many claim. While Obama's election was possible due to important changes that have taken place in the United States in the past fifty years, the reality is that profound disparities continue to exist between minority and white Americans that show no sign of dissipating during this Obama presidency. Of these profound disparities, some of the most striking include those in the United States prison population, where 55% of all federal prisoners are African American while only 13% of the U.S. population is black. Further, the academic achievement gap between blacks and whites persists even for the black middle class, continuing to fuel theories of white supremacy and black inferiority. In a society where 74% of black Americans have personally experienced racial discrimination and where 76% of African Americans believe that they do not receive equal treatment from the police, the claim of post-racialism rings hollow. In arguing that much hard work remains before Americans can authentically claim a post-racial arrival, this Essay examines the recent 2008 financial market crisis as well as several recent isolated instances of American racial disharmony (Henry Louis Gates, Shirley Sherrod and Jordan Miles), in order to lay bare any post-racial claim.

The curative imaginary is a powerful driver of hope and investment in medicine, often displacing attention and resources given to other illness-related fields of practice. Whereas cure implies an end to the sick role and the possibility of an absolute state of health, in practice those fields that are touted as having high curative potential grapple with the ongoing nature and incompleteness of post-cure care. By capturing the public imagination and channelling research and funding in particular directions, the motif of cure risks drawing resources away from other, less seductive forms of treatment, and towards the technological at the expense of the social. Drawing on our research into precision medicine and deep brain stimulation, we track how cure operates as a concept in these fields, and compare this to how medical practitioners actually care for patients. We argue that a critical engagement with post-cure possibilities offers an opportunity to challenge and rethink what constitutes good medical care, as well as the social, political, and economic underpinnings of medical innovation.

This book explores whether a beleaguered press in recent years has been developing an emotive, Eurosceptic post-truth rhetoric of its own – competing for attention with populist politicians. These politicians now by-pass the media, talking directly to their publics in blogs, on Twitter and Facebook. In the post-truth age, objective facts are less influential in shaping opinion than appeals to emotion. Audiences congregate around views they share and want to believe. The author presents a critical discourse analysis of the language used by populist politicians online, on Facebook, and subsequently quoted in the press, which highlights how the political rhetoric of Italian and British politicians is often at its most inflammatory around the issue of immigration. The same goes for the press. The Italian case study focuses on media coverage of the 2014 and 2019 European elections and 2018 general election. The British case study examines press reporting of the 2016 UK referendum on EU membership, the 2017 general election, and the September 2019 parliamentary debate immediately following the UK Supreme Court ruling that proroguing of Parliament was illegal. From the picture that emerges, the author argues that journalists need to change how they report, to challenge the post-truthers, holding them to account and pressing them on the facts while also harnessing the emotions of disaffected publics.

In depth, this paper reports a proposal to build students politically aware and ethically sensitive, through a model (set in the title "Crystals of time") for a thought that eludes the straitjacket of linearity: it is a mode of focalisation that is particularly called ´post-'. The author privileges the concept of focalisation as the most important in postcolonial narratology and leads the readers to explore how, by understanding both present and absent focalisation, it is possible to discover new imaginative and enriching visions, into a context of an intimate and empathic relationship between an interactive Reading and an interactive reader. The author also looks at the concepts of "gaze" and "iconicity". ; En profundidad, este trabajo presenta una propuesta para formar estudiantes políticamente conscientes y éticamente sensibles, a través de un modelo (establecido en el título "Cristales de tiempo") para un pensamiento que eluda la camisa de fuerza de la linealidad: es un modo de focalización que es particularmente llamado 'post-'. La autora privilegia el concepto de focalización como el más importante en la narratología poscolonial y conduce a los lectores a explorar cómo, mediante la comprensión de la focalización presente y focalización ausente, es posible descubrir nuevas visiones imaginativas y enriquecedoras, en un contexto de una relación íntima y empática entre una lectura interactiva y un lector interactivo. Art-form, send-up, farce, ironic disarticulation, pastiche, propaganda, trololololol, mode of critique, mode of production, means of politicisation, even of subjectivation -- memes are the inner currency of the internet's circulatory system. Independent of any one set value, memes are famously the mode of conveyance for the alt-right, the irony left, and the apoliticos alike, and they are impervious to many economic valuations: the attempts made in co-opting their discourse in advertising and big business have made little headway, and have usually been derailed by retaliative meming. Post-Memes: Seizing the Memes of Production takes advantage of the meme's subversive adaptability and ripeness for a focused, in-depth study. Tremendous research, policy, and investment is directed towards a new wave of automation in modern societies. Most notable within discourse for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, but also in radical ideas for Fully Automated Luxury Communism, automation appears essential to the future. Advocates claim it will renew capital accumulation, boost labour productivity, and extend managerial control in sustainable systems of production and consumption. Noting criticism about future essentialism in this automation advocacy, this essay will turn to innovations in marginal industrious spaces within industrial societies. Here people are hacking, subverting and appropriating ostensibly automating technologies for purposes of creativity, collaboration, and care. Social capabilities in post-automation are being cultivated. Perhaps greater attention to the politics implied in post-automation can help open our futures to more democratic deliberation?
