The presented paper deals with the basic issues, dilemmas and social and cultural contradictions in the Polish transformation process against the background of Central and Eastern Europe, the processes of the establishment and development of new states and nations as well as the new markets. The author views these problems through the light of the emergence of a broad class of subcontractors in a turbulent environment and the new modes of production, which are a result of changes in the structure of human labour introduced by post-Fordism (in its final stage, lean management) and postmodernity. The author also analyzes the social change as a consequence of social relations resulting from exchanging the life chances of the actors for the class-conditioned market opportunities in the existing social and political situation (conjoncture) and at the present stage of transformation at the moment when the emergent markets get shaped and mature. The study makes use of the hermeneutic method, which is finding out the essence of the present phase of transformation through the light of new concepts against the background of the historical-comparative analysis. The present article is not aimed at ordering reality but it is an inspiration for studies and for approaching transformation in accordance with a new conceptual apparatus of social sciences, sociology, management and political economy.

Celem artykułu jest próba ukazania mocy eksplanacyjnej i prognostycznej teorii stosunków międzynarodowych (neorealizm, neoliberalny instytucjonalizm i konstruktywizm społeczny) w sytuacji widocznych problemów z przewidzeniem końca zimnej wojny i wyjaśnieniem procesu demokratyzacji w państwach Europy Środkowej i Wschodniej oraz innych częściach świata. W obliczu istotnych przemian, które miały wpływ na kształtowanie się nowego pozimnowojennego porządku międzynarodowego, należy zastanowić się nad znaczeniem teorii w przyjmowaniu odpowiednich strategii badawczych, aby z jednej strony, można było z jakimś stopniem prawdopodobieństwa przewidzieć bieg wydarzeń oraz z drugiej, wyjaśnić ich istotę i znaczenie. Koniec zimnej wojny oraz proces transformacji państw Europy Środkowej i Wschodniej stawiają więc generalne i niezwykle istotne pytanie o możliwość rozwijania naukowego podejścia do analizy stosunków międzynarodowych, które wychodzi poza jedynie krótkoterminową obserwację bieżących wydarzeń. W artykule poddane są analizie najważniejsze podejścia teoretyczne w kontekście przyjęcia takiej strategii badawczej, dzięki której można by odchodzić od dominacji skrajnych wykluczających się wzajemnie stanowisk. Toczone do tej pory wielkie debaty pokazały, że bogactwo w nauce wynika nie z jednostronnego podejścia, nawet jeżeli w pewnym momencie, czy okresie mamy do czynienia z supremacją określonej teorii czy podejścia metodologicznego. Fiasko nauki o stosunkach międzynarodowych w przewidzeniu końca zimnej wojny ukazało konieczność podjęcia takich działań, których zadaniem byłoby łączenie a nie wykluczanie. Koniec zimnej wojny i proces transformacji Europy Środkowej i Wschodniej są więc traktowane jako studia przypadku pomocne w testowaniu teorii stosunków międzynarodowych jako adekwatnych narzędzi do analizy zmieniającej się sytuacji międzynarodowej. ; The aim of the article is to show the explanatory and prognostic power of theories of international relations (neorealism, neo-liberal institu¬tionalism and social constructivism) in the situation of visible problems with predicting the end of the Cold War and explaining the democratization pro¬cess in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and other parts of the world. In the face of significant changes that have influenced the formation of a new post-Cold War international order, it is necessary to consider the im¬portance of the theory in adopting appropriate research strategies so that on the one hand, it is possible to predict the course of events with some degree of probability and on the other, to explain their essence and importance. The end of the Cold War and the process of transforming the countries of Central and Eastern Europe thus pose a general and extremely important question about the possibility of developing a scientific approach to the analysis of international relations, which goes beyond only short-term observation of cur¬rent events. The article analyzes the most important theoretical approaches in the context of adopting such a research strategy, thanks to which one could depart from the dominance of extreme, mutually exclusive positions. The great debates that have been held so far have shown that wealth in science is not a one-sided approach, even if at some point or time we are dealing with the supremacy of a particular theory or a methodological approach. The fiasco of the science of international relations in predicting the end of the Cold War has shown the necessity of undertaking such activities whose task would be to combine rather than exclude. The end of the Cold War and the trans¬formation process of Central and Eastern Europe are therefore treated as case studies that help in testing the theory of international relations as adequate instruments for analyzing the changing international situation.

However, as post-war normalization set in, the leaders of Western Europe grew increasingly skeptical of American federalist visions, while Washington responded with ever more resolute threats of withdrawing its forces from Europe. The Treaty of Trianon (hereinafter Trianon), the enormous losses of territory and co-ethnics, and the shaking of Hungary's status as a dominant power in the Carpathian Basin imputed a tragic understanding of contemporary Hungarian history on the Hungarian society, invoking the idea of a trauma lasting even today. Trianon's understanding became a divisive issue for political parties after 1989, highlighting the ever-deeper divisions between right and left-liberals, since 2010. Its "overcoming" is a flagship project of the government's politics of identity, with modest success so far. Thus, the 100th anniversary was a crucial moment as a test case for a self-professed nationalist, traditionalist, conservative political force for manifesting a comprehensive politics of memory. In the light of the newly built monument at the heart of Budapest, with the Hungarian names of all localities on the territory of pre-1918 Hungary inscribed on its wall, a cautious shifting back to territorial revisionism was expected. In this article, I will argue that even with such tendencies being, obviously, present, the official commemorations were crafted with a surprising message, that attempts to turn the canonical understanding of Trianon upside down and reframe it into a common catastrophe of Central Europe. Doing so places the consequences in the context of the decolonization of history, the present decline of empires, and the emergence of nation-states while combining it with important tropes of the traditional, anti-liberal and revisionist Trianon discourse. Nevertheless, the result is a transparently political message that is not only driven by easily visible actual political goals (V4 and Central European), but one that detaches the politics of memory from historical references and legacies and creates a set of shallow symbols for utter instrumentalization, to recombine at will, in a vulgarised sense of post-modernism.

The Republic of Kosovo was created several years after the breakup of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Its problems were visible during Josip Broz Tito's presidency. Over the last ten years Kosovo has had two female presidents. The question is, what is the position of women on the Kosovan political scene? This phenomenon is particularly significant from the point of view of the post-conflict reconstruction of the state. The aim of this article is to analyse the evolution of the role of Kosovo Albanian women in the politics of Kosovo at the central level. For this reason, the article includes women involved in the armed conflict in Kosovo, especially in the activities of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA, alb. Ushtria Çlirimtare e Kosovës, UÇK). The author also presents the role of women in the Kosovan political arena since 1999, with particular emphasis on changes that took place after the declaration of independence of Kosovo. Furthermore, the author examines the profiles of selected female politicians. The article is based on an analysis of primary and secondary sources, the comparative and historical method, and an analysis of statistical data.

One of the most important socio-economic challenges is the skilful transformation of the economy towards low and zero-emission energy sources. This transformation is ongoing, and Poland, due to its high dependence on coal and high emissions has a challenging task to perform. Hence, the article aims to indicate the activities undertaken by Poland as part of the energy transformation related to the European Green Deal and the impact of energy transformation on the Polish economy. Therefore, the issues discussed include: explaining the principles characterizing the European Green Deal programme, describing the current state of the Polish energy sector, indicating activities that will make Poland a zero-emissions nation, and highlighting the economic implications of this energy transformation at the national level. The analysis shows that the transformation of the domestic energy sector is a long-term, ongoing process. The share of green energy in the national mix is systematically, albeit slowly, growing, and energy sector emissions show a downward trend, although in the current difficult energy situation in Europe, this trend may slow down. Moreover, for systemic and financial reasons it is not possible to quickly replace energy production from coal with other low or zero-emission energy carriers. The study used a critical analysis of the literature and strategic documents on the energy sector, the institutional and legal method, the prognostic method, and inductive inference.

"Cultures in Times of Transition" explores how the transformations of the 1980s and 1990s affected everyday life for citizens on both sides of the Iron Curtain; how ideas of "the other" circulated before and after the fall of the wall; and what a future utopia looked like for citizens of the East. These contributions range from the history of agricultural change, urban studies, linguistics, and legal history. They mirror the broadness of questions concerning the transition, but also hint at the heterochronous nature of those transformations.

Today Europeanization is a notion that is frequently used; however, there is a clear shortage of, or even fragmentariness of scientific knowledge, within this scope. The research into the Europeanization processes were initiated by political scientists in the 1970s, although the notion itself only gained popularity in the 1990s alongside the realization of the commom European market. From that moment, Europeanization is a research problem that has attracted interest in numerous fields and scientific disciplines. David Floyd [2001, p. 109] emphasizes the fact that the majority of market changes which have occurred since the beginning of the twenty-first century took place as a result of Europeanization processes which are explicite, defined as the phenomenon of the regionalization processes. As Neil Fligstein [2009, p. 107] highlights, the "majority of the research concerning the European integration focuses only on political and legal processes (…) which is the reason for which researchers overlook the fact how deep the European economy has been reorganized". There are few works of the kind cited above, nor have there been many recent papers seeking to undertake broad and deep research into the Europeanization processes in both economic (including macro- and microeconomic fields) and noneconomic dimensions.

This paper concerns post-1989 changes and modifications of Polish built heritage. For Poland, the year of the fall of the Iron Curtain marked the beginning of political and economic transformation: a transition from a socialist state and a member of the Soviet Bloc to a capitalist state integrated with the European Union. The implementation of democratic institutions and procedures, and the rise of free-market economy based on private property, has nurtured profound changes in the standard of living, which in turn triggered significant transformations of the traditional cultural landscape. Along with the development of pluralistic society, new ideas and approaches arose in the heritage sphere. The phenomenon described by Pierre Nora as "the explosion of memory" contributed to these changes, but was by no means their only source. The heritage practices were also shaped by the cultural policy of the state. As international cooperation was deepening, and the integration with the European Union was progressing, the makers of this policy increasingly drew on the ideas and solutions stemming from the experiences of the developed countries of the West. The heritage policy of the period was also influenced by the economic interpretations of culture, especially the idea of cultural capital, understood as an asset of cultural values. The primary objective of this article is to present the changes that the criteria of evaluation of monuments have been undergoing in contemporary Poland. The process is tremendously dynamic, which becomes apparent when one considers the widespread, grand-scale changes to the relics of old architecture in the last two decades. This paper describes examples of controversial uses of built heritage and details the circumstances behind a number of particular cases when the authenticity of visitors' experience was chosen over the authenticity of a material relic of the past ; Artykuł dotyczy przekształceń i modyfikacji dziedzictwa architektonicznego w Polsce po roku 1989. Upadek żelaznej kurtyny wyznaczał początek procesu transformacji ustrojowej prowadzącej od państwa socjalistycznego będącego częścią bloku sowieckiego do państwa kapitalistycznego, funkcjonującego w strukturach Unii Europejskiej. Wdrażanie instytucji i procedur demokratycznych, a także tworzenie wolnego rynku opartego na własności prywatnej stworzyło warunki dla głębokich przemian cywilizacyjnych, które z kolei doprowadziły do znaczących przeobrażeń tradycyjnego krajobrazu kulturowego. Proces kształtowania społeczeństwa pluralistycznego sprzyjał także rozwojowi nowych koncepcji i postaw w sferze dziedzictwa. Jednakże nie wszystkie z nich mają swe źródło w zjawisku, które Pierre Nora określił mianem "eksplozji pamięci". Praktyki społeczne dotyczące dziedzictwa architektonicznego w niemałym stopniu były również kształtowane przez działania z zakresu polityki kulturalnej państwa. Wraz z pogłębianiem współpracy międzynarodowej i postępem procesów integracyjnych ze strukturami Unii Europejskiej, twórcy tej polityki w coraz szerszym zakresie sięgali do idei i rozwiązań wynikających z doświadczeń rozwiniętych krajów Zachodu. Na ewolucję założeń polityki dziedzictwa realizowanej w omawianym okresie duży wpływ miały także ekonomiczne interpretacje kultury, a zwłaszcza koncepcja kapitału kulturowego jako zasobu wartości kulturowych. Podstawowym celem artykułu jest ukazanie przemian, jakim we współczesnej Polsce ulegają kryteria oceny wartości zabytków. O dynamice tego zjawiska świadczy skala przeobrażeń, którym uległy relikty dawnej architektury w ostatnich dwóch dziesięcioleciach. Artykuł opisuje różne przykłady kontrowersyjnego wykorzystania dziedzictwa budowlanego i analizuje uwarunkowaniami tych rozwiązań, w których autentyczność doświadczeń odbiorców stawiano wyżej niż autentyczność materialnego reliktu przeszłości.
