A vanishing mediator?: the presence/absence of the Bible in postcolonialism

Has Scotland suffered from colonial oppression by England for the last 300 years? While historiography may give an answer in the negative, this study reveals that the contemporary Scottish novel is haunted by strong feelings, marked by perceptions of abjection and inferiorisation in response to constructing the English as dominating. Drawing from an unprecedented corpus of contemporary Scottish novels, this study explores the postcolonial in Scottish fiction in order to investigate the underlying discursive power relations that shape the Scottish literary imagination. As such, the study demonstrates that the analysis of Scottish national identity profits from this new angle of interpreting the Scottish novel as postcolonial. The analysis of discourses such as gender, class, space and place, and race reveals how the construction of the Scottish as marginalised permeates the width of the contemporary Scottish novel, by referring to diverse examples, such as James Kelman's How late it was, how late or genre fiction, such as Ian Rankin's Set in Darkness. Thus, this study provides an insightful reading in the wake of current political developments such as the Scottish independence referendum.

"Postcolonialism refers not only to the historical epoch after the end of the colonial era, but also to a theoretical concept for the analysis of power relations. In German-speaking theology, this concept has so far received little attention. In the bilingual volume Postcolonialism, theology and the construction of the other, scholars of all theological disciplines, including religious studies, explore the heuristic possibilities that postcolonialism provides for their subject. In particular, the question is how "the other" is constructed as the counterpart of a "we." In times of global migration and growing right-wing extremism, theology must remain capable to offer answers to the urgent questions of the present.

Was bestimmt die postkoloniale Situation?

Marxism and the idea of 'progress' have been closely interrelated in the course of the last 150 years. I argue that this relation was, however, less clear-cut and one-dimensional than those reflected in critical appraisals hitherto of the notion of 'progress' in Marx and the many sorts of Marxism. After some reflections on the possibility of historicizing Marxism in the aftermath of '1989', the paper goes on to present some elements of the multi-faceted approach to 'progress' in the thought of Karl Marx himself, including some remarks on related topics (e. g. his interpretation of non-European regions). The genesis of Marxism – defined as any intellectual and political practice with reference to Marx – and the different attitudes of Marxist intellectuals towards 'progress' are then discussed. In contrast with the standard vision, in which 'Marxism' is depicted as being irremediably interlaced with a teleological concept of history, the narratives of 'progress' and Eurocentric distortions, this article demonstrates how different conjunctures of Marxist thought led to diverse ways of using the concept of 'progress'. ; Marxism and the idea of 'progress' have been closely interrelated in the course of the last 150 years.
