The large majority of faculty members teaching in community colleges are employed on a part-time basis, yet little is known about their working conditions and professional engagement. This article uses data from a recent national survey of faculty members teaching sociology in community colleges to provide this information, with particular attention to the different situations of those teaching full-time, part-time by choice, and part-time involuntarily. Contrary to previous analyses that assume homogeneous motivation and working conditions for part-time faculty members, our analysis finds differences between two categories in both structural aspects of their employment and perceptions of cultural devaluation expressed interpersonally. Both aspects serve as constraints on developing faculty-student relationships, a proven factor in student learning and success. We conclude that administrators and full-time colleagues must provide stronger support for the individuals introducing students to the discipline of sociology in the community college.

AbstractIn the past decade, new models have emerged with respect to the constructs of (intellectual) disability, quality of life, and supports. These models have implications both for understanding the underlying phenomena as for validating professional practices. The authors describe the context and key components of models of human functioning (American Association on Intellectual and Development Disabilities; International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health), supports, and quality of life, and demonstrate how these are related by synthesizing their similarities and differences. From this they discuss the implications for professional clinical and service good practice. It is argued that these models offer relevant frames of reference for guiding and integrating activities of medical, behavioral, and social disciplines in the field of intellectual disability services. It is also argued that knowledge of these models and their relationships facilitates communication among professionals and between professionals and policy makers.

The author analyzes the fundamentals of social competition and its specific features in Russia. As the basic prerequisites for social competition, the author considers the activity in which its subjects enter into various forms of interaction and relationships, including competitive ones, objective and subjective differences between people and their communities — historical, socio-political, socio-economic, socio-cultural, international. Competition manifests itself in developing living and social systems, from which stem its two main varieties — biological and social, between which there is continuity. In the living nature, competition is manifested, as shown by Charles Darwin, within one species and between different species, in the fight against life conditions, leads to the natural selection and evolution of species. Competition in society has its own characteristics. At the same time, competition in the animal world and society, as P. Kropotkin has shown, is associated with various forms of cooperation, mutual assistance, which are dominant and more conducive to progress than competition. The transition of Russia from the socialist system of public relations with a planned economy to a capitalist system with a market system of development created the foundations of competition in the country. This transition is influenced by traditional socio-cultural characteristics, as well as current processes in society and in the world.Th is article considers the competition of collective subjects of professional activity as one of the types of social competition, its structure, typology, and basic functions are revealed. Competition is defined as a system of interaction of individual, group and collective subjects of professional activity, characterized by the achievement of goals of activity and advantages in the context of confrontation with those pursuing the same goals and advantages by other actors.

AbstractThis study examines the relationships between a collaborative climate for research management professionals and external funding at universities. University research management is becoming increasingly important in efforts to develop innovation. By combining data from an original questionnaire survey and a public dataset, this study employed multilevel structural equation modelling. The sample comprised 292 research management professionals at 76 Japanese universities and research institutions. The results indicate that the whole hypothetical model of the two-level structure fitted the data well. At the organisational level, the knowledge-sharing environment had a significant positive relation with external research funding. Supportive supervision was also positively and significantly related to the knowledge-sharing environment at the individual and organisational levels. The findings show that a more collaborative climate for research management professionals can lead to more external funding of the entire university; they provide a new contribution to the theory and practice of university research management.

The term vicarious or secondary trauma describes the negative impact on professionals' emotions resulting from painful experiences in their practice. This study of practitioners involved in UK probation programmes for domestic violence perpetrators suggests that the emotional consequences are considerable and may differ for male and female practitioners, with potential implications for the nature of their relationships and intervention with men on such programmes. The study also concludes that current training is based on a knowledge base which may be outmoded, and that ongoing support from management and colleagues for staff engaged in this work is insufficient and may be preoccupied with managerial concerns to the neglect of professional practice.

This article is a study of global athletic labor migration that examines the mechanisms through which some athletic migrant workers are recruited. The article adopts a critical case study which analyses the movement of Canadian workers into Britain's Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) and synthesizes concepts derived from the sociology of sport and the sociology of highly skilled migration to explain these movements. Using a theoretical framework based on a figurational or process sociological approach, the article shows that the recruitment of migrant workers to EIHL teams need not be facilitated by a formal mediator such as an agent. Instead, informal communicative "friends-of-friends" networks and "bridgehead" contacts more commonly facilitate flows of information to the potential employer and potential migrant employee. Accordingly, mutually beneficial recruitments can be seen to be occurring as the result of human mediation facilitated by a series of informal interdependent networks of social relationships.

Using social, organisational and economic theories, this book develops an integrated research framework to demonstrate the effects of Chinese traditional guanxi networks on modern business relationships and market performance. It also compares the effects of guanxi networks between upstream and downstream partnerships and between traditional and high-value market outlets.It is recognised that quality and safety issues are the major constraints for Chinese vegetables entering into international markets. Primary producers face several bottlenecks such as small production scales, lack of market information and low negotiation power which leads to their exclusion by high-value market outlets such as supermarkets and international markets. Processing and exporting companies, on the other hand, experience instable delivery and inconsistent quality supply. As a result, they remain low-cost exporters in a low-quality segment of international markets. Doulas are non-medically affiliated people who provide emotional, physical, and informational support to people before, during, and after childbirth. The purpose of this study is to understand the role of the doula beyond its typically-assumed value as a superficial or consumerist entity and in relation to the broader maternal health care system available within the United States. Through six in-depth interviews with doulas about their conceptions of their personal identities, as well as their relationships with their medical counterparts and their clients, this project contributes to extant literature on symbolic interactionist linkages between identities and occupations. I examine how doula work requires one to be adaptive in political, performative, and emotional contexts. These factors contribute to the conception of doulas as rooted in an alternative knowledge system. My findings show how the doula occupation contributes to a decline of medical professional dominance.

This article is part of the issue "Promoting Social Inclusive Experiences in Uncertain Times" edited by Ana Belén Cano‐Hila (University of Barcelona) ; [Abstract] Municipalities must take steps towards an "educational action" that welcomes children into environments that estimulate their involvement and participation in issues that mean something to them. Professionals working directly with children in the municipal sphere must strengthen the development of their active and committed citizenship (SDG no. 4), relating to them as citizens capable of transforming their environment. Children's participation requires adults who recognise them as interlocutors and establish relationships of trust and mutual respect with them. Municipalities need to create opportunities for children to be included in the co‐production of local projects and to take a leading role in public policies. This article aims to offer elements that can nurture professionals' readiness and "capacity building" to facilitate children's participation. These elements are formed in the context of a pedagogical practice (the "coffee meetings") and emerge through a systematisation of experiences (Aguiar, 2013; Barnechea & Morgan, 2010; Jara, 2012, 2018; Mera, 2019). Selain itu, dapat menjadi tempat melakukan penelitian farmasi komunitas. Existe un amplio consenso en que el aprendizaje docente y el desarrollo profesional son factores clave de la calidad educativa. La realidad de los hechos, sin embargo, es más compleja, de manera que persisten las controversias y discusiones teóricas sobre cada una de esas cuestiones y sus relaciones. Tras enmarcar el problema, en el marco teórico se precisa la naturaleza del aprendizaje docente, la importancia de prestar atención a los resultados ligados al desarrollo profesional y se ofrece un mapa conceptual para analizarlo. En el diseño de la investigación se formulan las cuestiones planteadas, se informa de las decisiones metodológicas tomadas y se presentan los datos cuantitativos y cualitativos construidos y recabados. Al interpretar y valorar los resultados se destaca que ha habido determinados aprendizajes más y menos logrados en la formación continuada. Los más relevantes han sido desarrollados en proyectos de trabajo en los centros, los menos afectados por la formación son la atención a la diversidad, la reflexión sobre la práctica y las relaciones con familias y comunidad. Las políticas y programas de formación continuada habrían de mejorar sus finalidades y promover coherentemente condiciones y estrategias adecuadas ; It is widely agreed that the teacher's learning and professional development are key factors in the educational quality. The reality of facts is, however, more complex, and controversy and theoretical discussion persist about each of these questions and their relationships. After delimiting the problem, the nature of the teacher's learning is required in the theoretical framework, the importance of paying attention to the results linked to the professional development and a mind map is offered for its analysis. In the design of the investigation, the laid out questions are arisen, the methodological decisions taken are notified and the quantitative and qualitative data are reported, built and gathered. When interpreting and valuing the results it is stood out that there have been some learnings with a greater degree of achievement than others in the continuous training. The most relevant have been developed in projects in the work place, the least relevant for the training are attention to diversity, the reflection about the practice and the relationship with the families and the community. The purpose of this evaluation project was to elicit nurses'and families' experiences about differences and changes for nurses and families and the familynurse relationship when a family systems nursing approach was used to guide practice. Following nurses' involvement in an educational workshop, the evaluation examined changes in nurses'and families' experiences over an 8-week period of a child's hospitalization in a pediatric rehabilitation center. A total of 17 nurses and 13 parents participated in the project. Nurses and parents completed questionnaires and participated in semi-structured interviews and focus groups. Nurses completed journals reflecting on their interactions with families. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. Findings indicate that a family systems nursing approach had a positive impact on how nurses viewed their nursing practice and their work with families, thereby enhancing family-nurse relationships. Such findings have relevance to clinical nursing practice, professional development, and evaluation research design.

The relationship between a supervisor and employee has a direct effect on the employee's job satisfaction, work productivity, and efficiency. Understanding the interactions between Extension agents and County Extension Directors is critical to maintaining positive relationships and providing adequate support to Extension supervisors through professional development and training opportunities. This article examined the dyadic relationships between Extension agents and County Extension Directors in Florida. The majority of Florida Extension agents have high-quality relationship with their County Extension Directors. In addition, over half of relationships of five years or less are in the partner phase, suggesting new employees of the Florida Cooperative Extension Service progress through the leadership making process in a relatively short amount of time. UF/IFAS Extension Administration should provide increased leadership training for County Extension Directors to ensure all dyads progress through the leadership-making process to the partner phase, such as relationship building, and management and supervisory training.
