(Autorenreferat)

It is noted that this analysis of the international peace movement was written before the war against Iraq. In times of little mobilization the peace movement was kept alive by sensitive & concerned activists. In Feb 2003, when the war became likely, it was possible to mobilize large parts of the population. In discussing the motivation of protesters, it is concluded that continuing engagement is dependent on the duration of the conflict & learning by local peace camps. Adapted from the source document.

Discusses the anti-poll-tax campaign in GB as one of the most significant protest movements against the neoliberal policies of the Margaret Thatcher administration. The campaign is notable not only because of its size -- it was the largest act of civil disobedience in postwar GB -- but also because it mobilized sections of the population not frequency mobilized; its decentralized organization & social structural & political heterogeneity are also compelling. Its political fallout is briefly considered. 6 References. E. Blackwell

Applies the political opportunity approach to the protest-violence nexus, with attention to the role of the police apparatus as a central opponent of social movements. Philosophies that guide the strategical & tactical deployment of police forces are explored, along with how police behavior is perceived by protest groups. It is concluded that police strategies have to satisfy the requirements of three different "battlefields": tactical & strategical goal attainment, legitimacy of police measures, & acceptance in public opinion via the mass media. 20 References. Introduces contributions to this journal issue that seek a better understanding of the relationship between protest & violence & the possible conditions underlying the transition from protest to violence. Topics in protest research, including the political & cultural meaning of protest & concepts of violence, are discussed. The concepts underlying the structural strains, collective identity, framing, resource mobilization, & political opportunity structures paradigms of social movement research are outlined. The application of these paradigms to the relationship between protest & violence in each article is summarized. It is concluded that a general sociology of protest & violence is still a possibility. 39 References. T. Arnold
