Religious non-governmental organizations (RNGOs) and philanthropic activitiesin Indonesia have a long history. They existed prior to the creation of the nationstate. Social, political and economic changes in this country have influenced thedevelopment of non-profit organizations for more than sixty years after the Inde-pendence of the Republic Indonesia in 1945. Modernization and developmentprojects during the President Suharto era influenced the development of Non-governmental organizations (NGOs). In more recent years, RNGOs have largelydeveloped as a response to the socio-economic crisis after the downfall of Presi-dent Suharto regime. Discovering the dynamics of RNGOs in a broader context ofnon-profit organizations in Indonesia provides insights into the strengths andweaknesses of philanthropic activism in recent years. An historical overview ofnon-profit organizations, legal structures, functions, and financial resources areamong the themes that are described in this paper.

Examining the involvement of religious NGOs (RNGOs) at the UN, this book explores whether they polarize political debates at the UN or facilitate agreement on policy issues. The number of RNGOs engaging with the United Nations (UN) has grown considerably in recent years: RNGOs maintain relations with various UN agencies, member-state missions, and other NGOs, and participate in UN conferences and events. This volume includes both a quantitative overview of RNGOs at the UN and qualitative analyses of specific policy issues such as international development, climate change, business and human rights, sexual and reproductive health and rights, international criminal justice, defamation of religions, and intercultural dialogue and cooperation. The contributions explore the factors that explain the RNGOs' normative positions and actions and scrutinise the assumption that religions introduce non-negotiable principles into political debate and decision-making that inevitably lead to conflict and division. Presenting original research on RNGOs and issues of global public policy, this volume will be relevant to both researchers and policy-makers in the fields of religion and international relations, the United Nations, and non-state actors and global governance.

"Exploring faith-based organizations (FBOs) in current developmental discourses and practice, this book presents a selection of empirical in-depth case-studies of Christian FBOs and assesses the vital role credited to FBOs in current discourses on development.
Examining the engagement of FBOs with contemporary politics of development, the contributions stress the agency of FBOs in diverse contexts of development policy, both local and global. It is emphasised that FBOs constitute boundary agents and developmental entrepreneurs: they move between different discursive fields such as national and international development discourses, theological discourses, and their specific religious constituencies. By combining influxes from these different contexts, FBOs generate unique perspectives on development: they express alternative views on development and stress particular approaches anchored in their theological social ethics.
This book should be of interest to those researching FBOs and their interaction with international organizations, and to scholars working in the broader areas of religion and politics and politics and development."

Since the turn of the twenty-first century, there has been a remarkable surge of interest among both policy makers and academics on religion and its engagements with development. Within this context, 'religious non-governmental organizations (RNGOs)' or 'faith-based organizations' (FBOs) have garnered considerable attention. Early attempts to understand FBOs often took the form of typological mapping exercises, the cumulative effect of which has been the construction of a field of 'RNGOs' that can be analysed as distinct from—and possibly put into the service of—the work of purportedly secular development actors. However, such typologies imply problematic distinctions between over-determined imaginations of separate spheres of 'religion' and 'development'. In this article, we innovatively extend the potential of ethnographic approaches highlighting aspects of 'brokerage' and 'translation' to FBOs and identify new, productive tensions of convergent analysis. These, we argue, provide original possibilities of comparison and meta-analysis to explore contemporary entanglements of religion and development. This article was written as part of a broader research project on Religion and NGOs in Asia.
