Discusses the apparent contradictions in the (title's) suggestion of Jurgen Habermas's role in the normative foundations of a radical politics. Habermas is no radical, his philosophy born of the Enlightenment; further, how could radical politics be thought to spring of normative foundations; & the normative foundation alluded to is modern law, typically treated by radicals as a vehicle of oppression. Nevertheless, Habermas's Theory of Communicative Action (see IRPS No. 41/88c00922 & 88c00923) is interpreted so as to demonstrate its ability to underpin a framework for workable, self-organized democratic politics that follows from the Habermasian view of law. While law does provide the medium by which the powerful retain power, it also provides the "controlling counterweights to those same forces," because law is, inherently, a dialectical social category. (AuD-Fsk)
