In 1998, the Good Friday Agreement concluded a period of violence in Northern Ireland yet the scars of the conflict remained prevalent in the political landscape. Rival communities remained divided, economic performance was poor and intercommunity tensions frequently manifested. In a bid to reinforce progress towards a peaceful and stable society, over €1bn of public money was spent between 2000 and 2006 on small-scale community and business ventures. Despite the scale of expenditure, however, little rigorous effort has been made to test the success of the programmes. Splitting Northern Ireland into 582 electoral wards, we merge individual-level on perceptions of neighbourhood quality from the British Household Panel Survey with detailed PEACE II accounts. Noting potential selection and omitted variables biases, we implement two-stage random effects models and show that neither level of spending, nor number of projects, in a region is associated with improvements in perceptions of neighbourhood quality.
Based on two studies with Bosniak and Croatian students in Bosnia and Herzegovina, this paper analyzes the effects of religiosity on intergroup forgiveness and reconciliation. Both Christianity and Islam advance forgiveness and reconciliation as one of the major moral imperatives. Previous studies also indicate that religiosity can increase readiness to grant forgiveness on the inter-personal level and facilitate rapprochement. When it comes to inter-group level, prescripts of religious piety often conflict with norms of group solidarity and care. Another set of research suggests that religion obstructs conflict transformation due to the dogmatic reasoning it promotes, including reframing of immanent disputes in transcendental (and thus non-negotiable) terms. This study initially tested whether adding religious symbols to conflict narratives impacts prosocial attitudes of respondents and came with negative results. In other words, adding religious codes to already known narratives about conflicts did not have a significant impact on participants' attitudes. In a subsequent SEM analysis, it was found that religiosity in both groups is strongly correlated with group-centricity, which negatively mediates its relationship with both forgiveness and reconciliation. We conclude that collectivistic forms of religiosity that privilege ingroup solidarity might have negative effects on intergroup forgiveness and reconciliation in post-conflict settings.

The paper examines the impact of converting previous open-access common land into protected areas on the community resource management system in Shimshal, northern Pakistan. We explored three main questions in this regard. First, what happens to community resource management under strict government control of the resource? Secondly, what has happened to the centuries-old practice of the traditional yak herding system of the Shimshal community as a result of the introduction of new policies leading to the creation of protected areas? Thirdly, can the community retain resource control of the protected area (state property), and how can we conceptualize it under the property regime? The research draws the following three conclusions: (1) a clear divide exists between the local government and the community on resource management and resource use, (2) the Shimshal community relies significantly on yaks for their livelihood, and the imposition of new rules and regulations in protected areas has significantly altered the Shimshal community's traditional yak herding practices, and (3) community control over resources in protected areas would be a new experiment under the state property regime. The study concludes that it is possible to bridge the gap between what have been regarded as irreconcilable principles of protected areas and livelihoods. This arrangement needs to be contextualised by giving specific importance to the community and their management practices. The state would achieve its conservation goals by monitoring the local community's activities and ensuring that their livelihoods and conservation efforts do not negatively affect each other.
The article is devoted to the study of the experience and peculiarities of reconciliation of contradictions between Germany and France. The positions of the Presidents of France and Chancellors of the Federal Republic of Germany regarding the theoretical foundations and practical steps of the implementation of French-German reconciliation are studied. This paper deals with the problem of Alsace-Lorraine, a region with a border identity, which repeatedly became the cause of Franco-German disputes and passed from one state to another. The role of the individual in overcoming the contradictions between Germany and France is highlighted. The factor of European integration is considered, which not only contributed to the reconciliation of contradictions between Germany and France, but also turned the two states into leaders of a united Europe. The Elysee Treaty and its implementation were analyzed. The military cooperation between France and Germany is investigated. The problem of historical memory and the desire to reconcile the contradictions between Germany and France are revealed. It is proved that the experience and peculiarities of reconciliation of contradictions between Germany and France testify to the fact that the real reconciliation of the two leading states directed their efforts towards a more global goal – the creation of a common Europe. It was concluded that the mechanisms for achieving Franco-German reconciliation are interesting for studying and borrowing, taking into account national characteristics in the reconciliation of other European countries, and regions with borderline identities. The French-German experience may be useful for application in Polish-Ukrainian relations. The main conclusion from the analysis of the experience and the peculiarities of reconciling the contradictions between Germany and France is that their implementation led to unexpected and far-reaching consequences that once seemed just a dream. At the beginning of European integration in the 50s of the twentieth century, it was difficult to imagine the contemporary EU with its common currency, the Schengen area, developed economy, social programs. Franco-German reconciliation was transformed into the fruitful work of the Franco-German tandem, on the success of which depends not only the future of France and Germany, but the evolution of the entire united Europe. ; Стаття присвячена дослідженню досвіду та особливостям узгодження суперечностей між Німеччиною та Францією. Досліджуються позиції президентів Франції та канцлерів ФРН з теоретичних засад та практичних кроків втілення французько-німецького примирення. У статті досліджується проблема Ельзасу-Лотарингії, регіону з порубіжною ідентичністю, який неодноразово ставав причиною французько-німецьких суперечок та переходив зі складу однієї держави до іншої. Виокремлюється роль особистості у подоланні суперечностей між Німеччиною та Францією. Розглянуто чинник європейської інтеграції, який не тільки сприяв узгодженню суперечностей між Німеччиною та Францією, але перетворив дві держави на лідерів об'єднаної Європи. Проаналізовано Єлисейський договір та його реалізацію. Досліджено військове співробітництво Франції та Німеччини. Розкрито проблему історичної пам'яті та прагнення узгодження суперечностей між Німеччиною та Францією. Доведено, що досвід та особливості узгодження суперечностей між Німеччиною та Францією свідчать про те, що справжнє примирення двох провідних держав скерувало їхні зусилля на більш глобальну мету – утворення спільної Європи. Підсумовано, що механізми досягнення французько-німецького порозуміння є цікавими для вивчення та запозичення з урахуванням національних особливостей у примиренні інших європейських країн та регіонів з порубіжною ідентичністю. Французько-німецький досвід цілком може бути корисним для застосування у польсько-українських відносинах. Головний висновок із аналізу досвіду та особливостей узгодження суперечностей між Німеччиною та Францією полягає у тому, що їхня реалізація призвела до неочікуваних та далекосяжних наслідків, які колись здавалися лише мрією. На початку європейської інтеграції у 50-х рр. ХХст. важко було уявити сучасний ЄС з його спільною валютою, Шенгенською зоною, розвиненою економікою, соціальними програмами. Французько-німецьке примирення трансформувалося у плідну роботу французко-німецького тандему, від успіху якого залежить не тільки майбутнє Франції та Німеччини, але еволюція всієї об'єднаної Європи.
The aim of this study is to search for ways of overcoming ethnocentrism and particularism and to promote mutual tolerance and reconciliation. We want to plumb the cultural depths of Lendu and Hema peoples of Bunia, to discover what can appeal to reconciliation and also to combine this cultural idea of reconciliation with Christian reconciliation and forgiveness. Since April 1999, there has been in the Diocese of Bunia a cycle of violence involving two ethnic communities: the Lendu and the Hema. Through this violence, human life and property have been destroyed. As a consequence, relationships have broken down despite people belonging to the local church, and ecclesial life has been seriously affected. If we wish to undertake the study of a spirituality of reconciliation, it is also because Mgr. Dheiju Leonard, when he was the ordinary of the Diocese of Bunia, exhorted the faithful several times in his homilies and pastoral letters, inviting the parties in conflict to conversion, peace and reconciliation. In line with this, our thesis aims at studying and researching a spirituality of reconciliation.
Abstract Background Medication errors are a leading cause of patient harm. Many of these errors result from an incomplete overview of medication either at a patient's referral to or at discharge from the hospital. One solution is medication reconciliation, a formal process in which health care professionals partner with patients to ensure an accurate and complete transfer of medication information at interfaces of care. In 2007, the Dutch government compelled hospitals to implement a bundle concerning medication reconciliation at hospital admission and discharge. But to date many hospitals have failed to implement this bundle fully. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the barriers and drivers of the implementation process. Methods We performed face to face, semi-structured interviews with twenty health care professionals and managers from several departments at a 953 bed university hospital in the Netherlands and also from the surrounding community health services. The interviews were analysed using a combined theoretical framework of Grol and Cabana to classify the drivers and barriers identified. Results There is lack of awareness and insufficient knowledge of health care professionals about the health care problem and the bundle medication reconciliation. These result in a lack of support for implementing the bundle. In addition clinicians are reluctant to reallocate tasks to nurses or pharmacy technicians. Another major barrier is a lack of communication, understanding and collaboration between hospital and community caregivers. The introduction of more competitive market forces has made matters worse. Major drivers are a good implementation plan, patient awareness, and obligation by the government. Conclusions We identified a wide range of barriers and drivers which health care professionals believe influence the implementation of medication reconciliation. This reflects the complexity of implementation. Implementation can be improved if these factors are adequately addressed. The feasibility and effectiveness of these strategies should be tested in controlled trails.
The signing of the Peace Treaty in Colombia has positioned in public, academic and social debate the notion of reconciliation. Nevertheless, it does not exist comprehensive single definition of this term; the substance of reconciliation is determined by the conceptions reached over the conflict its dynamics and the peace. This essay deals with which should be the notion of reconciliation needed in Colombia to go forward towards peace scenarios, suggests that democratic and political reconciliation is nourished on basic concepts to recognize it as the ideal to build a stable and lasting peace. ; La firma de los Acuerdos de Paz en Colombia ha posicionado en el debate público, académico y social la noción de reconciliación. Sin embargo, no existe una definición o comprensión unívoca del término; el contenido de reconciliación es determinado por las concepciones que se tenga sobre el conflicto, sus dinámicas y la paz.
