Bewertung der Entwicklung der Beziehungen zwischen Senegal und Gambia im Zeitraum 1982-88, als versucht wurde, im regionalen Raum eine Konföderation aufzubauen. Es gab Erfolge und Fehlschläge. Die Zusammenarbeit auf sicherheits- und außenpolitischen Gebiet funktionierten gut. Gemeinsame staatliche Interessen überwogen, die Autorität der jeweiligen politischen Eliten wurde nicht berührt. Eine Integration in Richtung Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion wurde hingegen nicht erreicht. Dies wäre allerdings das Herzstück einer erfolgreichen Integrationspolitik gewesen. (DÜI-Wsl)

The author sketches out the problems and prospects of regional co-operation among India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and the Maldives in the light of the initiative taken by the late President Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh in 1980 to institutionalize such co-operation. Five meetings at the foreign secretaries level and one meeting of the foreign ministers between April 1981 and August 1983 to promote economic co-operation among these countries. (DÜI-Sen)

Die Rückwirkungen westeuropäischer Integration auf nationalstaatliche Wirtschaftspolitiken sind von jeher von sozialem, politischem und wissenschaftlichem Interesse wegen des fundamentalen Dilemmas zwischen dem Bekenntnis zum Freihandel einerseits und strukturpolitischen Interventionen zur Milderung regionaler Disparitäten andererseits: Der Abbau von Handelszöllen gebiert die Errichtung nicht tarifärer Handelshemmnisse. Dem soll die Harmonisierung der Regionalpolitiken entgegenwirken. As the author sees it, regionalism is a product of the dynamics of world politics. After a brief look at the growth of regionalism in general and also in the specific context of the Third World, the author traces the evolution of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation) and discusses its prospects. S. D. Muni thinks that until the political and strategic atmosphere in the region becomes more harmonious, this regional Association may not achieve any significant advances even in the economic and developmental arena.
