Since they appeared, the studies of Science, Technology & Society (STS) have been interested in education as the key to help the citizens of tomorrow to participate in the discussions dealing with the future of technoscience. In Spain, the STS subjects became part of the secondary school programs since the educational reform. Nevertheless, the analysis of the textbooks used in Catalonia shows that a deterministic vision of science & technology - both of them thought as entities with their own logic of development, independent from social reality - coexists with a neutralistic conception, which considers technoscience as a basic tool that can be used by humanity either in a correct or an incorrect way. The student has the perception that science & technology shape the social reality, but that are somehow independent from society.

; This currently much more complex to refer to the Gypsy people than it may have beenfive or ten years ago. Neither non-Gypsy nor Gypsy society is the same as then. Globalisation and its consequences have also reached smaller cultural groups. Ten years ago. the Gypsy people were the nalional ethnic minorily. or at least referred to as such in official documents. Today. nonetheless. this role has been pushed aside or has even disappeared. Other cultures and ethnic groups have taken Gypsies' place. This new situation has caught Gypsies and administrations unprepared. In such a framework , analysis is devoted to concepts such as culture, integration, etc . as regards the Gypsy people. something which limited spheres of thought have already been engaged in for some time. but which has not been given an essential role in social and academic, nor obviously in political and associative realms until now.

Ellis Rubinstein, editor of the renowned journal Science for nine years, member of the World Economic Forum and advisor to various governments visited UAB, invited by BIOclusterUAB. During his visit he spoke on the pros and cons of such a quick and unfiltered scientific communication, about its future and the need, despite the current economic downturn, to continue investing in science by correctly managing the balance between basic and applied research and small investments in young talent, thus setting the goal on an economy based on science and technology as an alternative to the current obsolete economic system and as the way of overcoming this crisis.

Starting from the eld of communication and the analysis of different forms of citizen participation in the digital environment, we present an initial examination inside a line of research in which the sciences of communication and education converge. Methodology: We propose an analysis of the current media ecosystem dominated by digitization, subjective approaches, and forms of socialization. Around the metaphor of food and diet we introduce critical studies on media in general and the Internet in particular, and propose ways of enhancing media literacy for a conscious, critical and active public. We compare this proposal with the European Union's Framework for Developing and Understanding Digital Competence, applied by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, in order to bring it into line with previous and current work. Results: We propose an area of digital competence complementary to those outlined in the Framework for Developing and Understanding Digital Competence, focusing on intervention in the proposal, elaboration and assessment of digital policies by the general public.

Too often we forget that culture is not a social fact but a concept. In this article it will be argued that cultures do not exist, in spite of their apparent pervasiveness within the social sciences and in daily life. A question will be raised as to the ideological role of the idea of culture, that is, what effects does it produce in the social construction of reality? To do that, the concept and its uses will be criticized, noting that the very concept and its use in daily life represents practices of classification and segregation. Finally, it is suggested that the concept of culture should be abandoned and that we should look forward to new ways of conceiving human diversity more suitable to a situated ethical thinking.
