»Reading Schmitt Reading« -- The four essays compiled in this volume are readings of Carl Schmitt in the double sense of the genitivus subiectivus and the genitivus obiectivus. Their aim is not only to re-read Schmitt's texts, but at the same time to read what, i.e. which authors, which texts, Carl Schmitt himself read – and above all how he read them.

A common comment on studies about the work of Carl Schmitt is his concept of the political oscillates between nostalgia for the strong State of the titled era and the conviction that the contemporary political scene has changed irrevocably to be populated with new actors, both State and non-State. Despite this ambivalence seams there is important that it is worth deve- loping thinking with Schmitt and turn against him, either navigating through his theory of politics without endorse all the consequences drawn from them or taking their reflection in a direction not contemplated or in which it could not or not wanted to go. In this paper I shall discuss some tensions in its reflection - the nature of the nexus between war and politics, to the status of the enemy and the normative argument about order as a good in itself–to then examine its distinction between politics and the political–perhaps its contribution more original and lasting to contemporary political thought.
An examination of Carl Schmitt's work, especially The Concept of the Political (1932), assesses charges that Schmitt aestheticizes violence & glorifies war & death. Consideration is given to Schmitt's claim that economic, ethnic, or other oppositions only lead to war when they have "become political by virtue of acquiring the necessary intensity to group people as friends & enemies." What Schmitt meant by "war" is explored, along with problematic aspects of Chantal Mouffee's reading of Schmitt which sanitizes his thinking by transforming enemies into adversaries who must be confronted. Attention is also given to Schmitt's "double bind" that maintains the relation between the political & politics will be played endlessly, preventing one from "hijacking" the other, & suggesting that politics & the political are two coexisting "registers of political matter" that are "irreducible to one or the other." Other issues discussed include misinterpretations of the double inscription; similarities between Schmitt's thinking & strategic concerns of post-foundational perspectives; & the presence of both formalism & the normative claim in Schmitt's "decisionism.". This article, originally a preface to the French edition of Carl Schmitt's book The Leviathan in the State theory of Thomas Hobbes, displays a critical analysis that not only puts the above work in context, but also raises a question about Schmitt's appropriation of Hobbes, an author who was considered a beacon of light by the former during his whole lifetime. Thus, the article undertakes a reconstitution of Schmitt´s relevance for Political Theory and Philosophy in recent years, and then develops the way Hobbes was analysed in Schmitt´s essay. The interpretation of the Jurist is not innocent at all, and the propinquity to the English author in some issues could have allowed the former to reinforce his own arguments by using the latter as a mere strategic tool. The key question the article tries to elucidate is whether this re-appropriation was successful or not.

The essay connects the revival of Schmitt in the Italian culture of the '70s and '80s to the theoretical and political need to find conceptual tools to assess the limits and aporias of Modernity and of the related rationalist and dialectic "theoriticization" of politics. The root of Schmitt's conceptual power lies in the capacity to assume the groundlessness of Modernity and the disconnection between reason and reality not as a surrender, but rather as the origin of the creative and con flicting energy crisscrossing politics. While it was able to lend a refreshed intellectual freedom versus worn-out intellectual models, Schmitt's thought can neither be annexed to a post-Gramscian Marxism, nor disconnected from the category of sovereignty. Epimetheus more than Prometheus, Schmitt remains within the horizon of Modernity, grasping it in its decline: he conceptualizes the explosion of the State, but not its alternative. As for the relation to the present, without surrendering to easy resonances between the current crisis of liberal-democracies and Schmitt's critique of Modernity, it is more fruitful to assess the persistence of the "intermediate phase" that Schmitt recognized in the '30s and use the powerful conceptual devices he provided to fabricate new ones.

Defends Carl Schmitt against accusations by many scholars that he was a "Nazi philosopher" on the grounds that he was not a Nazi theoretician & that he was a jurist, not a philosopher. Yves Charles Zarka, head of the Center for the History of Modern Philosophy & the Thomas Hobbes Center, wrote "Carl Schmitt, Nazi Philosopher?" printed in Le Monde after Schmitt's book, The Leviathan in the State of Theory of Thomas Hobbes (2002 edition) was published in France. Schmitt rejected politics rooted in the biology of race although he possessed an anti-Semitism based on Catholic tradition. Schmitt joined National Socialism in 1933 hoping to influence the movement he considered devoid of thought. He was unaware of Hitler's real intentions & in opposition to the Nazi's direction, considering his deep belief in the power of law. His attempts lasted only a year, & Nazi attacks against him started immediately. Zarka's attempts to silence Schmitt are in line with the same slanderous methods used by the Nazis. L. Hoffman
