Der Transformationsprozeß in Georgien wurde begleitet von politischen Wirren, einem Zusammenbruch der Wirtschaft und ethnischen Konflikten. Erst mit dem Erfolg Schewardnadses bei der Präsidentschaftswahl 1995 erreichte Georgien ein gewisses Maß an Stabilität. Politische und wirtschaftliche Probleme bestehen jedoch fort. Während der Konflikt um Süd-Ossetien weitgehend gelöst ist, ist der zukünftige Status der Abchasen im Rahmen einer georgischen Föderation noch ungewiß. Nach dem wirtschaftlichen Einbruch 1990/91 war 1995 das erste wirtschaftlich relativ erfolgreiche Jahr für Georgien. Gleichwohl hat das Land weiter mit einer niedrigen Produktivität, hoher Arbeitslosigkeit und den Folgen einer unzulänglichen Energieversorgung zu kämpfen. Auflagen der Weltbank hinsichtlich der Verabschiedung eines Bankengesetzes und eines Staatshaushalts wurden erfüllt. Im Zuge der Stabilisierung des Landes verbesserten sich auch die Beziehungen zu ausländischen Konzernen. (BIOst-Wpt)
