; Censorship is defined as a process that puts limits on the way a society or a sub-group in a society conveys their information and views. This process involves State censorship, censorship of the self, local censorship and mixed censorship. When the influence of the cinema on the masses was noticed, some regulations began to be made for films to be shown at the cinema. Such regulations are observed in countries like France and the USA, which are leading countries in terms of the cinema. With the introduction of the cinema into Turkey, practices of censorship began to be observed in the Turkish cinema, too. Various practices of censorship have been made in the Turkish cinema beginning in the Ottoman Era and from the initial years of the Republican Period to the present. There are commissions and supreme boards that implement these practices. These commissions perform their duty in accordance with the criteria laid down in the current censorship by-laws. Many directors in the Turkish cinema experienced serious conflicts with the censorship board because they have made films that did not conform to the criteria determined by the censorship board. One of the directors who got involved in these conflicts with his first film was Metin Erksan. As a representative of the social realism, Metin Erksan included problems of the society in his films and therefore constantly experienced problems with the censorship board. In our study, Metin Erksan?s films ?Minstrel Veysel?s Life, Dry Summer, Revenge of Snakes, White Hell and Beyond the Nights? were examined using the Sociological Analysis technique and an effort was made to explain why these films were subjected to censorship.
1990 sonrasında Türk sinemasında devletin görünme biçiminin incelendiği bu çalışmada, ulus devlet olarak Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devleti'nin temel unsurlarının filmlerde nasıl yansıtıldığı ve eleştirildiği, devlet zihniyetindeki değişim tartışılmıştır. Zihniyetin, zihniyetteki değişim ve bu değişimin devlet düşüncesine etkisinin, Türk devlet zihniyetinin incelendiği birinci bölümde literatür taraması yöntemi izlenmiştir. Aynı yöntemle, başlangıcından 1990'lara Türk sinemasında devletin nasıl göründüğü incelenmiştir. İlk iki bölüm kuramsal çerçeveyi oluştururken, çalışmanın üçüncü bölümünde, ulus devlet olarak Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devleti'nin temel unsurlarının 1990 sonrası Türk filmlerindeki temsili araştırılmıştır. Modern/ulus devletin unsurları olarak sekülerleşme, milli kimlik, tek dil, ülke/vatan/sınır, sivil ve askeri bürokrasi başlıklarının her birine yönelik bir film seçilmiştir. Bu filmler, göstergebilim yöntemiyle analiz edilmiştir. ; This study aims to explore the appearance of the government in Turkish cinema after 1990's, focusing on how the fundamental elements of the government of The Republic of Turkey as a nation state is represented and criticized in the films while analyzing the transformation within the governmental mentality. The first chapter consists of a thorough survey of the previous scholarly studies which analyze mentality, the transformation within mentality and how this transformation affects the idea of a government and where the Turkish governmental mentality stands. With the same method, the study is carried on by analyzing how the government makes an appearance in Turkish cinema from its very beginnnig to 1990's. While the first two chapters form the theoretical background of the study, the third chapter focuses on the representations of the fundamental elements of the government of the Republic of Turkey as a nation state in Turkish films produced after 1990. A film is selected out for each of the concepts of secularity, national identity, sole language, country/homeland/borders, civil and military bureaucracy as elements of a modern/nation state. These films are analyzed through semiotics.
How Long (1976) filminin içeriği yüzünden tutuklanmıştır. ; In 1948, National Party won the elections under the leadership of Daniel François Malan. François Malan was the founder of Apartheid regime in South Africa. He wanted to divide the country into different races. In this system, black people were isolated from all segments of society and also government of the country. Afrikaans government exploited natural resources of the country and made black people slave and ordinary workers. African National Congress and blacks were organized by Nelson Mandela and his revolutionary friends to topple the regime. In 1980s and 1990s, Apartheid regime was weakened by international isolation, embargoes, economic recession, and armed attacks of African National Congress because of its racist stance. Upon this desperate situation, President of South Africa of that time Frederik Willem de Klerk started the era of political transformation by releasing Nelson Mandela and political prisoners from jail and opening the doors for negotiations. After hard negotiations between governing National Party and African National Congress, on 27 April 1994, African National Congress won the elections and Nelson Mandela was elected as the President of South Africa. In 1996, a new constitution was written. With this constitution, freedom of expression and media was taken under the guarantee of the constitution. This environment freed cinema and other types of media from Apartheid regime's fences. Since that time, South Africa has been called the rainbow nation for its various races, languages, and religions. During Apartheid regime, cinema and other types of media were controlled by Apartheid governments and Afrikaans people. Afrikaans press was the mouthpiece of the governing National Party. English press was censored by Apartheid governments and bureaucrats. Critical press and films were censored. South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), which was established in 1936 with an official act, has been the state monopoly of radio and television until the mid-1980s. Also, SABC was the mouthpiece of Apartheid governments. Cinema also has been censored until the mid-1980s. Apartheid governments created and used A Scheme and B Scheme Subsidies to control cinema sector. While A Scheme Subsidy was for English and Afrikaans films, B Scheme Subsidy was created for black films including black actors and languages. Films, which benefited from these subsidies, couldn't become critical of Apartheid governments. Critical films were censored and maybe banned according to their degrees. For instance, Gibson Kente, an important director of Apartheid era, was arrested because of his film called How Long (1976) and its critical context. However, political transformation, which was born because of economic recession, international isolation and armed struggle of African National Congress, changed this desperate situation. In 1980s and 1990s, third cinema and critical films developed in South African cinema. These films and third cinema criticized the system of Apartheid and governments. Also, father figure of state was criticized because of its brutal killings. These films were My Country My Hat (1983), Mathata (1984), Mapantsula (1988), the Chicken Man (1990), and Midnite Rush (1990). These cinema milestones criticized Apartheid regime and the system. Thanks to political transformation, which commenced in the late-1980s by National Party and African National Congress, South African cinema has seen an important freedom environment to produce films until today. While Apartheid regime was preventing black people from being actors and directors of films, in new rainbow nation black people can reach these positions while not being isolated by the whites of society. Ramadan Suleman, Khalo Matabane, Teddy Mattera, Zola Maseko, Ntshavheni Wa Luruli, John Kani, and Madoda Ncayiyana are important actors and directors of the new period. Moreover, in this new period black people can reach the presidency of South Africa. After Apartheid, the National Film and Video Foundation was founded to equally support film directors and actors whatever their races or religions. Today, South African cinema provides equal opportunities for blacks and whites. Blacks can take reasonable share from cinema sector today. The purpose of this article is to show changing nature of cinema during and after Apartheid, and impacts of the wave of third cinema on this changing nature. Being able to explain this also makes it necessary to touch upon political history of the Apartheid regime. Cinema in South Africa can't be separated from politics. The Apartheid regime controlled cinema through censorship and other means. As the pressure of the Apartheid governments decreased, free voices could be heard in the cinema. With the collapse of the Apartheid regime, we see the liberation of cinema actors and producers. In the article, the selection of the method in accordance with this purpose has been carefully treated and the traditionalist – historicist method has been chosen. We cannot isolate the development and change of cinema from its social and political context. Because of this reason, the traditionalist - historicist approach, which evaluates social cases in historical and social context, has been adopted instead of the behavioralist method that suggests working social cases in a laboratory environment. Raymond Aron is one of the scientists who embraced traditionalism in social sciences and international relations studies. According to Aron, social cases cannot be detached from their social and political context. For this reason, the development of cinema is discussed in the context of historical and social events in the article and traditionalist method has been adopted.
Many cultural assets unearthed in archaeological excavations, elements that make up the culture of the settled communities such as technology, art, economy and, if any, can be revealed through written sources. However, in the case of nomadic communities, there is a prejudice that temporary shelters made of lightweight materials are "invisible communities" defined by only a small number of material items available for transportation. As a result of these prejudices, the nomadic culture has been tried to be understood either through negative elements in the settlements, written sources written by the settlers, or through ethnoarchaeological research. In the Archeology Department of Atatürk University Social Sciences Institute, under the supervision of Proffesor Dr Mehmet Işıklı, the "Archaeological Evidence of Nomadic Culture in the Southeast Anatolian Region: An Ethnoarchaeological Study" one of the important questions encountered during the studies carried out within the scope of the doctoral thesis titled " to what extent modern nomadic communities will reflect the cultures of the ancient period" has been.
In this article, the question "what is culture" was chosen as the first step to start looking for answers to all these unknowns and questions, within the framework of the great transformations of humanity in the transition to a production economy, the elements that make up the culture were examined, and the elements of culture were discussed through the answers given by different scientists to this question.
In the 1990s, Kurds living in Mardin and the surrounding provinces were subjected to various pressures, forced migration, and negative treatment such as village evacuation. Veysi Altay's documentary "Bir" (The Well) tells the story of the disappearance of seven people, three of whom are children after they were detained in the Dargeçit district of Mardin in 1995, and the search for them by their relatives. The fact that the director, who traces the search, focuses on the struggle of the seven relatives instead of drawing attention by implying the Kurdish problem with popular political references, brought the documentary to an objective point. In this study, based on the documentary The Well; Instead of "documentary-reality", which distances reality from fiction as much as possible, the possibilities of shooting a "real documentary" will be analyzed. In this context, the reasons for avoiding the use of metaphor, the director's limitation of his camera, and the relationship of preference with ethics will be included in the analysis. While "The Well" has strong meanings from literature to visual arts, in the narrative it has been transformed into a setting, character, and plot that can be grasped, seen, and recorded in history by conveying the truth to witnesses; in this state, instead of losing its meaning from its "reality", it gained strength by feeding on the richness of fiction, but also gave up on poetic reality or all kinds of abstract meanings. This study will examine the effects of the director's direct involvement in the narrative on ethical values and its contribution to the reality of the film, as well as investigate the limits of the construction of "truth" in the post-truth period with a documentary film. The fact that the director renounces his power over the film and turns into the eye that is "attracted" and "witnessed" from time to time, rather than "shooting" the film, will be examined ethically with the method of discourse analysis. The aim of the study is to present an example of whether the creation of documentary cinema in search of reality and its way of influencing the masses are in conflict with ethical principles.
Published in 2021 by Routledge, ' American Antifa: The Tactics, Culture, and Practice of Militant Antifascism' examines the process of mutual radicalization between far-right and anarchist groups in the United States. The book reviews analyzes the terrorist threat potential of militant anti-fascist movements.
Bu çalışmada Türk Sinemasında sansür olgusu kapsamında Yılmaz Güney'in filmlerindeki sansür olgusu ele alınmıştır. ; In this research, the fact of censorship in Turkish cinema will be examined with in context of the historical development of censorship notion which is very important in cinema studies. During this research as investigation the films will be evaluated as after the censored versions of Yılmaz Güney's films. As in all over the world the censorship is matter after revolutions. The main purpose of the study is to consider the films of Güney as were influenced by censor censorship cases. Censorship is also an important case for the general arts with in cinema. As in our country as all over the world including in particular the impact of censorship in the period of undemocratic practices used, and the meaning of art has been a factor that dulls. Censorship is a barrier for the films which contain the special efforts under the unsuitable conditions which aims to be watched by the wider society. It also causes disappointing of the script writer, players and all kind of area workers of the movie industry. This study aims to detect the censorship in Güney's films and through this way the study aims to make a contribution to literacy. In the first stage it is searched for Turkish cinema and censorship, beginning of cinema in Turkey. At the second stage it is searched for Güney's role in Turkish cinema, Its' feature as cinematography. At the third stage handled censored movies are given as chronological order; Sayyed Khan(1968), Hope (1970) and Wall (1984) by Güney on the grounds of censorship of the film are included in our study.
