The Emancipation of Women from Kitchen Slavery in the Soviet Union: A Broken Promise
; After the October Revolution, the Bolshevik government introduced an ambitious programme aimed at a radical change of society, going well beyond traditional political fighting. Even a matter of apparently low political interest such as alimentation became part of their programme intending to build this new society. Discussing the development of Soviet culinary culture and public food service is impossible without analysing the condition of women. Over the years, an attempt at liberating women from the burden of domestic labour was made. This paper analyses the reasons behind the Soviet women emancipation policy and its outcomes.

Percorsi della schiavitù in Spinoza. Un confronto con Aristotele e La Boétie
This paper presents Spinoza's reflection on the relationship between the concepts of slavery, conatus and desire. According to Spinoza, the man is not available at the command of others. This requires an investigation into the mode of subjection and slavery condition, defined as inability to achieve its useful and to act freely from the negative emotional constraints. In the description of slavery, and the use of historical examples that exemplify it, it is found a classical aristotelian source. The french debate in recent years focused on the political value of desire and conatus, concepts that are fundamental to interpret the condition of slavery and the domain of the minds.

During the 19th Century, more than 2000 children of sub-Saharan origin were redeemed from slavery by missionaries and educated in Europe with the aim of sending them back to Africa as «indigenous missionaries». Yet, so far this phenomenon has found no place in historiography and collective memory. Forgotten, perhaps, or removed. The so-called «moretti» were not mere anonymous satellites, orbiting around the European missionaries. Victims of the choices of others, but also protagonists according their own choices, they were real «agents of history». This book is a first attempt to remove them from the peripheries of our narratives and to return them a place and a name. The archives show it clearly: African-Europeans are far from being just recent actors of European history.

The article deals in detail with the transition from indigenous slavery to free paid work in French West Africa during the early decades of the 20th century. More specifically, it focuses on the modalities of exit from slavery following the enforcement of abolition measures in 1905, taking into consideration issues such as freed slaves returning home, freed slaves staying at their master's, freed slaves seeking for inclusion within the colonial apparatus, and finally freed slaves choosing migration and moving beyond both their ex-master's and the colonial control. These are the major tracks in a difficult transition towards a full-fledged development of free paid work, which is still a thorny and yet unresolved issue in contemporary Africa.
