Humanities for the Environment, or HfE, is an ambitious project that from 2013-2015 was funded by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The project networked universities and researchers internationally through a system of 'observatories'. This book collects the work of contributors networked through the North American, Asia-Pacific, and Australia-Pacific observatories. Humanities for the Environment showcases how humanists are working to 'integrate knowledges' from diverse cultures and ontologies and pilot new 'constellations of practice' that are moving beyond traditional contemplative or reflective outcomes (the book, the essay)towards solutions to the greatest social and environmental challenges of our time. With the still controversial concept of the 'Anthropocene' as a starting point for a widening conversation, contributors range acrossgeographies, ecosystems, climates and weather regimes; moving from icy, melting Arctic landscapes to the bleaching Australian Great Barrier Reef, and from an urban pedagogical 'laboratory' in Phoenix, Arizona to Vatican City in Rome. Chapters explore the ways in which humanists, in collaboration with communities and disciplines across academia, are responding to warming oceans, disappearing islands, collapsing fisheries, evaporating reservoirs of water, exploding bushfires, and spreading radioactive contamination. This interdisciplinary work will be of great interest to scholars in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences interested in interdisciplinary questions of environment and culture.

Citizenship and the Nation State in Greece and Turkey brings together papers on a transdisciplinary dialogue on nation formation in Greece and Turkey as successor states of the Ottoman Empire, and on aspects of civil society in the two.

Did foragers become farmers because cultivation of crops was simply a better way to make a living? If so, what is arguably the greatest ever revolution in human livelihoods is readily explained. To answer the question, I estimate the caloric returns per hour of labor devoted to foraging wild species and cultivating the cereals exploited by the first farmers, using data on foragers and land-abundant hand-tool farmers in the ethnographic and historical record, as well as archaeological evidence. A convincing answer must account not only for the work of foraging and cultivation but also for storage, processing, and other indirect labor, and for the costs associated with the delayed nature of agricultural production and the greater exposure to risk of those whose livelihoods depended on a few cultivars rather than a larger number of wild species. Notwithstanding the considerable uncertainty to which these estimates inevitably are subject, the evidence is inconsistent with the hypothesis that the productivity of the first farmers exceeded that of early Holocene foragers. Social and demographic aspects of farming, rather than its productivity, may have been essential to its emergence and spread. Prominent among these aspects may have been the contribution of farming to population growth and to military prowess, both promoting the spread of farming as a livelihood.

How do migrant women living in illegality build intimate relationships? How do they experience, resist or take advantage of the tight link between intimacy and migration status created by the German migration legislation?Drawing on rich biographical accounts and ethnographic methods, the book offers an insightful and sensitive look at a mostly unknown aspect of life in illegality. Adopting a critical feminist perspective, Flaminia Bartolini shows how intimacy should be understood in its intrinsic power dimension and looks critically at the German migration regime and on its effects on migrants' lives.

Axel Honneth's development of the Frankfurt School's Critical Social Theory has increased the amount of attention that is paid to the dimension of political praxis by emphasizing the social struggle for recognition. Nevertheless, the political-sociological axis of this tradition remains relatively unexplored and unclear. Taking this as a starting point, I investigate the contribution that the pragmatic sociology of Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot could make to the fortification of this political dimension. I do this by tracing a line of argument through several of Boltanski's studies in the direction of a political-sociological axis. I show that this aspect of Boltanski's sociology can be understood as a very fruitful analysis of processes of political articulation that may help Critical Theory overcome a political deficiency.

Assertive mental health outreach to homeless persons, which operates under the premise that mental illness must be understood and treated within the individual's social and economic environment, points towards the goals of community membership and 'citizenship'—a connection to the rights, responsibilities, roles, and resources that society offers through public and social institutions and informal 'associational life'—for homeless persons. We argue that the concept of citizenship is a useful framework for approaching these goals. We review the principles of assertive mental health outreach and relevant aspects of contemporary citizenship theory; present a case example of outreach leading to a 'citizenship project'; and discuss the potential benefits and pitfalls of a citizenship framework, including strategies and recommendations for program administrators, researchers and policy makers.

Mutual savings and loan societies played an important role in social and economic life in nineteenth-century Ireland yet, to date, they have been overlooked by economic historians of the island. This article addresses this lacuna by providing an overview of the history of Friendly Society Loan Funds (FSLFs) and Building Societies. It finds that there were a variety of savings strategies in urban Ireland and concludes that the economic function of these mutual institutions sheds light on other aspects of Irish history, such as Loan Fund Societies (LFSs), savings banks and cooperative banks.

Urbanization and increase in population have led to an upsurge demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly neighbourhoods, these designs include a variety of aspects that increase resource efficiency, mitigate environmental impacts, improve quality of life, and encourage community interaction. The study focuses on identifying and analysing the various design aspects implemented within the housing estate in order to evaluate their effectiveness in promoting sustainability. By examining features such as accessibility, infrastructure, green spaces, energy efficiency, and waste management, the research evaluates the delivery and impact of sustainable design in Talba housing estate. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews, observations, and quantitative analysis to gather comprehensive data. The findings of this case study will contribute to a broader understanding of the importance and implications of design elements for establishing sustainable neighbourhoods, thereby offering valuable insights for urban planners, policymakers, and housing developers in their pursuit of creating environmentally friendly and resilient communities.

In this issue of the Scottish Journal of Residential Child Care, the first of the 2015 volume, we publish two peer-reviewed articles, two short reflections on aspects of practice, the first article in a new category which is intended to highlight the basis for doctoral research, two book reviews, and a note of the highlights in the recently published Scottish Government 'Children's Social Work Statistics 2015 (incorporating the Children Looked After Statistics)'.

"Reproducing Domination: On the Caribbean Postcolonial State collects thirteen key essays on the Caribbean by Percy C. Hintzen, the foremost political sociologist in Anglophone Caribbean studies. For the past thirty years, Hintzen has been one of the most articulate and discerning critics of the postcolonial state in Caribbean scholarship, making seminal contributions to the study of Caribbean politics, sociology, political economy, and diaspora studies. His work on the postcolonial elites in the region, first given full articulation in his book The Costs of Regime Survival: Racial Mobilization, Elite Domination, and Control of the State in Guyana and Trinidad, is unparalleled.
