Amsterdam's North-South Metro Line (NZL) megaproject has had a long eventful history. From the initial proposal in the 1990s, through construction in the 2000s to 2010s, to its opening in 2018, the NZL overcame many challenges. Several geotechnical incidents in the Vijzelgracht neighbourhood in 2008 cost the City of Amsterdam and the Dutch government millions of Euros. These incidents required complex recovery management actions, and there was a complete re-evaluation of the project, resulting in extensive reformulation of the project's communications and impact management strategies, and in more-transparent public participation. Despite NZL's significance, it never underwent any formal Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), thus it provides an interesting case to consider how social impacts are addressed when there is no formal ESIA. Drawing on document review, semi-structured interviews, and a focus group, we considered the experiences of key decision-makers and project team members to learn how social impacts were assessed and managed over time in the absence of ESIA. We conclude that, when combined with appropriate urban governance frameworks, applying ESIA in urban and transport planning would improve the assessment and management of the social impacts of future megaproject infrastructure developments.

"India: Environmental, Political and Social Issues first highlights the environmental conditions of Uttarakhand such as relief, structure, drainage, climatic conditions and forest types, as well as the influence of these aspects on aspects of demographic structure such as population distribution, growth, sex ratio and literacy. The authors go to present findings indicate that the Tropical Lowland Rain Forests in Sri Lanka are capable of recovery, in terms of biodiversity and stature, if sufficient recess is provided following land use practices such as selective logging and chena cultivation in spatial and temporal contexts. As a desert state, the climate of Rajasthan is uniquely characterized by low rainfall, dryness and extreme temperature. Fauna of this region are specifically adapted to this hostile environment. In this compilation, threats to fauna of Rajasthan are assessed. Later, after presenting a short introduction to the historical and cultural background, the authors narrate Karunanidhi's most decisive film, Parasakthi (Supreme Power, 1952). It challenges certain cultural stereotypes such as the sexual exploitation of women, social discrimination, corruption, religious superstition and so on. The closing study examines the effects of socio-economic determinants on child malnutrition in Uttar Pradesh, the most populous and malnourished state of India. Using data from NFHS-4, this study highlights district-wide variations in the nutritional status of children less than five years old in the state"--

This paper provides an overview of social and environmental management practices in the oil and gas industry. It outlines the evolution of international oil companies' approaches over the last 20 years, reviews what social and environmental management amongst such companies means in practice, and highlights some of the unresolved issues emerging today. While most companies now model their approach to social and environmental management on international norms, they face a variety of drivers of their practices. These range from complying with international standards in order to gain access to finance, to complying with new host country legislation and regulation, and gaining and maintaining a good reputation and a 'social licence to operate'. This paper argues that the complexity of these drivers problematizes the portrayal of the industry's social and environmental management as 'voluntary' corporate social responsibility, and somewhat renders the latter term misleading.

"In Romania: Environmental, Social and Economic Issues, the authors highlight the diversity of geosites in Anina Mountains, Romania and the role of this high geodiversity in environmental protection, education and socio-economic development. Next, the authors discuss the interest in "green" technology from the authorities and inhabitants of Romania. Additionally, in Romania there is an increasing interest in building with low pollution, high efficiency and environmental friendliness. In closing, the authors discuss the political crisis of December, 1937 in Romania which caused the formation of the government of O. Goga, the chairman of the National Christian Party.
