"This book has been developed from two main theses which justify my venture into the field of social psychology. The first is that the visceral-organic structure of man is basic to the understanding of psychology. However extreme the assertion may seem, I think it fair to say that the thinkers who have formed the knowledge of mind in its largest and truest terms have been those who have shown the relationship of drive, emotions, and intelligence to the structures of the body, and vice versa. The second thesis is that apart from his group a man is a mere potentiality. He is developed in a milieu that fosters, modifies, or destroys his capacities. And how that milieu works, the psychiatrist and physician has ample opportunity to witness. To explain the individual and discuss his psychology as something distinct from the psychology of the society that daily becomes more complex and ranges from the remote past far into the future is, as the anatomists would say, a false dissection, by which structures are isolated from one another artificially and their organic connection destroyed. Therefore I have begun with the structure and organic functions of the individual and have endeavored to show how social forces, like the gases of the environment, sweep in and out of him--taking command of his viscera and transforming their functions into approved deeds, and creating within him both the pleasures of conformity and the bitter, self-dividing struggle that results from the disharmony of individual capacity and desire with social authority. While the facts presented are not new, the emphasis and formulation of principles are to a certain extent original, and they merit appreciative attention. I make no pretense of having fulfilled my aim completely, the shortcomings of my work being as discernible to me as to any critic; but withal, I hope and even feel assured that both the visceral-organic and the sociological bases of social psychology are here given the emphasis they deserve"--Preface. "This book has been written for use as a text in college courses in social psychology. Basically, the field is conceived to be the study of those aspects of human personal behavior which are developed and controlled by the interaction which takes place between the individual and his small intimate circle of associations known as the primary group. Recent years have witnessed a significant expansion of the content of social psychology. Because of the diverse views of experimenters and the contribution of different fields of study, the increase in knowledge has sometimes proved to be an embarrassment of riches. A major purpose of this book is to show the essential unity of the knowledge that has been acquired and to emphasize the areas of fundamental agreement in the field rather than one particular school of thought. Moreover, materials from the subject fields of either sociology or psychology which do not bear directly on this conception of the subject have been excluded in the interest of a clear and integral organization. Although designed primarily as an introduction to social psychology, this discussion also includes a review of the latest scholarship in the field and an analysis of the methods by which new knowledge has been acquired. The constant emphasis on the experimental background should lead the student to an understanding of the present research frontiers of social psychology. It has been intended, finally, that the discussion of human behavior presented here will provide a direct and meaningful application by the reader to situations encountered in everyday living. Using current socio-political thought and research, the authors of Social Psychology - Identities and Relationships examine topics such as violence, social and political transition, race and racism, and sexualities. "The approach to this textbook is interactionist. It is hoped that this framework permeates the entire substantive area of the book. While the major part of this book is thus dedicated to presenting the subject matter of social psychology with this interactionist viewpoint, a minor part (quantitatively speaking) is devoted to an account of the scope and method of social psychology, its long history as a social philosophy, and its short history as a social science. There is included a critique of postulates and values in social science which, it is hoped, is sufficiently developed so that it is not necessary to offer negative and reproachful comments on modern viewpoints dealing with empirical evidence. "The growing interest in social psychology as an academic subject in the last twenty years has stimulated the demand for more and more texts in the field. Each new appearing text heretofore has meant, practically, an innovation, a projection of a novel point of view, a creation of a separate school of social psychological thought. We feel, therefore, that the time is only too ripe for a slight pause in the manufacture of new ideas in the field of social psychology and for an inventory to be taken of the most usable material in social psychological observation and research. We have found in the literature of the field and in our own research many valuable assets and have used them as capital for the present venture. More particularly, we have drawn on Cooley, Dewcy, Mead, Thomas, Watson, Kantor, Allport, Thurstone, Faris, Park, Koffka, Kohler, Stern, Piaget, McDougall, Bernard--to mention a few of the living representatives of social psychology, psychology, and sociology--for many of our ideas. At the risk of some overlapping, we have treated each chapter subject as a totality in all its significant ramifications. Consequently, we have been able to emphasize and to integrate certain fundamental points, which will be found to recur in slightly different context throughout the various chapters. The text has been planned to meet the requirements of a short or long course. By a graduated use of exercises and bibliographies, the volume can be made to cover a term, a semester, or a year. We have intended that the bibliographies and exercises should be used to build up the course and acquaint the student with as wide a vista as possible. The point of view of this work is that of gestalt theory. Gestalt concepts were applied to examine issues in social psychology. The author hopes that the reader will find them of help in widening the horizon and in deepening perspective of the human situation. It is contended that this starting point accounts for a number of emphases of this work. Social relations at the human level, even the simplest, require emotional and intellectual capacities of a high order. The author calls attention to their productive character, which is necessary for the understanding of destructive social processes. It is argued that psychological processes have the extraordinary property of providing (under certain conditions) a knowledge of things and persons. One should not assume that they are generally subjective phantoms, that the world might be seen properly but for people. The author has kept in the forefront the human modes of experiencing the world of nature and men, since the social actions of which are those of conscious beings who act largely in terms of what they understand and feel. It is contended that sound progress requires a clarification of what is unique about social-psychological facts and their investigation on the level at which they reveal their special properties. "Of the writing of texts in social psychology there is no end. The author or each of them believes that he has a special justification for offering his own particular version of the common theme, and I am no exception to this general rule. Perhaps I can formulate the raison d'etre of this volume by outlining a little of its history and by expressing my indebtedness to a few of the individuals from whom its main ideas have been borrowed. These and other converging influences have led me to frame nearly every kind of social-psychological problem in terms of psychological processes which take their particular form from the interactional context in which they occur. And I have come to see group memberships as providing the sine qua non for specifying the interactional context of human social behavior. Groups provide their members with shared frames of reference--particularly in the form of positions and roles, in terms of which they perceive themselves as well as one another. So little social behavior is immune to such shared influences, and so much of it is very largely determined by them, that I have come to accord them a central place in my own thinking. I hope that, in so doing, I have not fallen into the fallacy of assuming that social behavior springs merely from the interiorizing of social norms. This would be quite as disastrous as to ignore social norms altogether. At any rate, this point of view has led me to view social behavior as occurring on the part of biological organisms which are also group members. To understand it we must study both individual life and group life, in terms of a single body of coherent concepts and principles. I have therefore tried to sketch an outline of the psychology of group membership in a way which is neither merely psychological nor merely sociological but which, I hope, may contribute to the growth of a body of concepts and principles of truly social-psychological nature"--Preface.
