Im Norden nichts Neues? Die Arktis in Russlands Sicherheitspolitik
In: Osteuropa, Band 61, Heft 2-3, S. 243-256
ISSN: 0030-6428
The Soviet Union considered the Arctic a territory of great military significance. Since the end of the East-West conflict, this has changed fundamentally. The military dimension of Russia's Arctic policy plays a clearly smaller role. Moscow cooperates with other countries across former bloc borders and participates in circumpolar regional organisations. In addition, a number of large companies play an important role in the far north today. Although danger is more likely to threaten Russia on its southern border, the Arctic is still seen as a space that is not only of great economic significance but of relevance to security policy. Nonetheless, the potential for conflict in the Arctic should not be overestimated. Adapted from the source document.
Die Regierung Kiesinger und die Krise in der CSSR 1968

Beginning in April 1968, as part of a policy of getting involved again in Eastern Central Europe and the Balkans pursued since 1963, Bonn hoped to normalize German-Czechoslovakian relations at last. At the same time restraint was exercised so as not to jeopardize reforms in Prag. Certainly in this situation too, a subordinate value assigned to relations with the CSSR was suited to the Federal Republic's calculations regarding Eastern Europe. Accusations, including those by French President de Gaulle too, that Bonn's position was partially responsible for the Soviet invasion do not, however, hold up. Suppression of the "Prague Spring" proved to be significant in the years following. An internal evolution in the communist world seemed actually possible even if room for manoeuvre was much narrower than was originally assumed. Furthermore, the Soviet Union could see in this fresh confirmation that the East Bloc would be respected afterwards, as before, as its "chasse gardee". In the future, the Federal Republic made no attempts to pursue Ostpolitik which circumvented the Soviet Union. (Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte / FUB)

Massenmedien als Diskriminierungs – und Propagandamittel am Beispiel von Jehovas Zeugen in der UdSSR ; Mass media as a means of discrimination and propaganda – based on the example of Jehovah's Witnesses in the USSR
Jehovah's Witnesses were banned as a religious community in the USSR. It was only after the collapse of the Soviet Union that the first registrations of the recognized religious communities followed in the territory of the Soviet Republics. In the Soviet Union, the government used media as a propaganda tool to create the image of Jehovah's Witnesses as an anti-social and harmful group. They were accused of political activities, espionage to the US, and antisocial behavior. The films and press were used. The manipulation of information was based on agitations, false information, halftruths, political agitation and slander. The consequence of this was a wide-ranging discrimination against the witnesses. Their children got poorer grades, and employers refused to accept the money and leave. In order to win Jehovah's Witnesses for Communist ideology and to break down organizational structures, the security services of the Eastern Bloc were working together, and in particular the Ministry of State Security of the GDR made a great contribution to this area. After 1990, the persecuted Jehovah's Witnesses were rehabilitated. They received victim cards and compensation money. Both in Russia and other postsovskaya republics there are tendencies to the progressive restriction of freedom of expression and religion. Since March 2015, the importation of literature from Jehovah's Witnesses to Russia has been banned. In July 2015, their official website was forbidden. The public prosecutor's office investigates some of Jehovah's Witnesses because of their religious activities. On July 17, 2017 the Supreme Court of Russia confirmed its earlier ruling that criminalized the activity of Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia. Jehovah's Witnesses have submitted 28 applications to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) because of the allegations of extremism and related maladministration. In 2015, the US Human Rights Commission reiterated its recommendations to Russia, which had previously been addressed (in 2003 and 2009), "to revise the law to combat extremist activities".

; The dissertation of Karolina Lang-Vöge is entitled "'They are Germans, from our point of view, Soviet satellites. ' : Christian democratic values in the Adenauer-CDU reflected by the division of Germany and in regard with the socialistic East (1945 until 1966)". The dissertation focuses on the perception of the USSR that dominated the socialist Eastern bloc in the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) led by Konrad Adenauer. Therefore, the years 1945 to 1966 are of importance in this research since during these years Konrad Adenauer became the leading figure of the CDU. He was able to continue as the leading figure and was federal chairman until March 1966. The dissertation seeks to decode the CDU's anti- communism and anti- socialism contrasting it with its ideal, the Christian idea of man. The circumstance of the party using anti-communism as a powerful means of integration has not been analyzed in detail yet. This dissertation focuses on this particular blind spot in research. The research intends to disclose the phenomenon of the Christian democratic anti- communism during the division of Germany and the perception of this division in the Adenauer-CDU. Furthermore the perceptions of other socialistic states within the CDU are being analyzed. As a result of the research there is a clear connection between the reception of the East and the values of the CDU which were inspired by Christianity. The dissertation also presents the impact and the facets of anti- communism as a means of integration and cohesion within the party. In order to become and to be, the western CDU needed the eastern communism. At the same time its anti- eastern attitude pointed out its own cultural and historic roots which could be seen in the Catholic and Protestant formations of German parties in the 19th and 20th century. The author used the key terms dignity, freedom, state, right and truth, nation, duty, Christian in the West and Anti-Christian in the East as leading terms imagestructuring the dissertation. The research is based on a broad variety of resources, such as reports of factional and extern communication, committee minutes, press releases, biographic and autobiographic sources.

One of the great illusions at the end of the bloc confrontation was that lasting peace, security and stability would prevail in Europe. In fact, new areas of tension have emerged. NATO was practically extended to the Russian border, although the Soviet Union had been promised otherwise in 1990. World military spending is a quarter higher than at the end of the Cold War. Germany is once again the central power of Europe west of Russia, and the return of the "German question" has become a problem again. The coup in Kiev and the integration of the Crimea into Russia in 2014 and the subsequent reciprocal sanctions between the EU and Russia have further aggravated tensions However, it is important to say goodbye to all warfare scenarios, strictly follow a concept of war prevention and provide political solutions that can only be achieved on the basis of peaceful coexistence and a new policy of détente.
