Since the eighties action theory and theory of structuration have increasingly been accepted as basic conceptual frameworks for social geography. This article contnbutes to this debate by demonstrating the potential of a certain variant of action theory (see ZIERHOFER 1997) for empirical re search. First the author sets out in detail how this "language pragmatics approach" has been applied in a research pro ject on the processing of "Waldsterben" (forest decline, litterally: dying forest) in science and mass media (ZIERHOFER 1998). He shows in particular in what ways the empirical ana lysis is guided by a specific reference to the normative di mension of interactions, and he discusses the possibilities of a critical social science that are provided by such an approach. Finally,he argues that particularly in the first few years of the debate on "Waldsterben" neither forestry science nor mass media met those Standards of critical-reflexive processing of informations that guarantee the political sovereignity of Citizens.

"This essay uses analytical tools developed by Edward Soja, Michel Foucault, and Michel de Certeau to investigate time-space configurations in the religious movements inaugurated by Jesus and promoted by Paul. The article begins with an account of the domination of time as a conceptual tool for analyzing both figures and their teachings to establish the context for an alternative space-time reading of the data represented in the New Testament and extra-canonical sources. Jesus' proclamation of the Kingdom of God is placed in the context of the monetization and hence disruption of traditional kinship and social structures. His parables, sayings, and the traditions associated with him represent thirdspace performances of his rural world. His proclamation of the Kingdom of God coheres with Foucault's notion of heterotopia in that it places listeners in places outside of place. His articulation of behaviours coincides with de Certeau's notion of tactics inserted with dominant social strategies. Through a reading of Paul's message against the backdrop of urban poverty Paul's motif of the church as body is seen as a thirdspace articulation of social groups, heterotopic place outside of place, and communal solidarity within the urban context of the Roman Empire." The European Values Education (EVE) project is a large-scale, cross-national, and longitudinal survey research program on basic human values. The main topic of its first stage was "work" in Europe. Student teachers of several universities in Europe worked together in multicultural exchange groups. Their results are presented in this issue.
