For Sweden, 2003 was a dramatic year for politics, with the rejection of the euro in the European Monetary Union referendum. The referendum campaign is reviewed, noting the resounding "No" vote. A minor reshuffling in the cabinet is noted before summing up some of the key political developments for the year: Gudrun Schyman's resignation, slowing economic growth, & tenuous employment. 2 Tables, 7 References. J. Zendejas
Describes features of family formation that are unique to Sweden, & questions some conventional interpretations of those features. Marriage & birth rates in Sweden have declined in modern times, while rates of informal cohabitation have risen. It is argued that the standard explanations given for this trend, eg, women's improved education or higher labor force participation, are too simplistic. In fact, no explanation for this trend is well supported. 14 Tables, 25 References. M. Wagner

Various forms of representative group litigation have existed for decades in the special Labor and Market Courts, initiated by private organizations such as trade unions and the Consumer Ombudsman. A 'true' class action, brought in a general court by a member of a group, or by an organization, or an administrative agency (e.g. the Consumer Ombudsman)--allowing claims both for injunctive relief and individual damages for group members--was introduced in Sweden by the Group Proceedings Act, which entered into force on January 1, 2003. This is an opt-in procedure. [Reprinted by permission of Sage Publications Inc., copyright The American Academy of Political and Social Science.]

Analyzes 263 protest events reported in the national newspaper Dagens Nyheter, 1988-1997, to examine environmental protest in Sweden. Explanations for the significant shift in the level of reported protest events, 1988/89 & 1990/91, are offered, eg, fall of the USSR & the election cycle. Three aspects of the shifting issue cycle are then identified: certain issues (eg, animal rights) grew in importance, while others declined (eg, nuclear energy) & developmental issues (eg, roads, traffic, & infrastructure) remained stable. Attention turns to the form & organization of environmental protest, finding most activism to be conventional & demonstrative & of a small scale; violence was almost exclusively the purview of animal rights protests. A significant change in the character of organizations involved in protest events is discerned. Greenpeace is the most confrontational actor, most mobilizations occurred at the subnational level. Findings point to the continuity of the Swedish environmental political landscape & reveal the heterogeneity of the actors involved. Despite institutionalization, a new wave of activism, including militant direct action linked to animal rights, has emerged. Also, local project making in connection to Agenda 21 has appeared as a new form of entrepreneurial environmental action that is not easily reflected in protest events. 6 Tables, 4 Figures. J.
