This research is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted at Malmö Queer Film Festival and Cinema Queer Film Festival in Stockholm, between 2017-2019. It explores the relevance of queer film festivals in the lives of LGBTQIA+ persons living in Sweden, and reveals that these festivals are not simply cultural events where films about gender and sexuality are screened, but places through which the political lives of LGBTQIA+ persons become intelligible. The queer film festivals perform highly contextualized and diverse sets of practices to shape the LGBTQIA+ discourse in their particular settings. This thesis focuses on salient features of this engagement: how the queer film festivals define and articulate "queer", their engagement with space to curate "queerness", the role of failure and contingency in shaping the queer film festivals as sites of democratic contestations, the performance of inclusivity in the queer film festival organization, and the significance of these events in the lives of the people who work or volunteer at these festivals. The thesis combines an ethnographic approach with post-structuralist discourse theory and insights from other fields, including the growing academic discipline of film festival research, to de-construct the entrenched meanings, representations and ideologies that are embedded in signifying practices performed at the festival. A recurring theme of this research is the way LGBTQIA+ persons living in Sweden find themselves abandoned and vulnerable in contemporary Swedish society. The thesis proposes that the queer film festivals become relevant through re-constructing the precariousness of LGBTQIA+ lives in Sweden, by engaging in various forms of micro-activism. The research describes how participants engage in micro-activist practices, bringing together people who become collectively aware that things can change. It unpacks the internal tensions between the various identity groups present at the festival, shows how these festivals struggle to construct a LGBTQIA+ community, and outlines the ways in which queer film festivals can be understood beyond the prism of identity politics. Through a detailed study of the two festivals, the thesis suggests a multi-faceted illustration of how micro-activism is performed in a post-rights society such as Sweden.

The article introduces the collective research project entitled The Social History of Hungarian Cinema, 1931–2015, executed by the staff of Film Studies Department Eötvös Loránd University. This data-driven research aims to examine how and why Hungarian films have changed over time. Using the case study of conflict types in the plots of Hungarian films this study discusses the methodological problems of longitudinal explanations of change in Hungarian film history (periodization and dividing film between genre-based film and auteur films/art cinema). Based on the analysis of statistics and trends, the study presents the most important types of conflict in Hungarian film history. With respect to the political turning points and the periodization of Hungarian film history, the article states that each of the three broad periods (1931–1944, 1945–1989, 1990–2015) is characterized by its own distinctive set of prominent conflict types. The pre-1945 era is characterized by a massive number of love conflicts, the socialist period by the highest rate of political conflicts (and the lowest rates of love and crime conflicts), and the post-socialist period by a high rate of crime and generational conflicts. Furthermore, by analysing the connections between conflict types and genres, the study reveals recurring patterns and trends of shorter periods: it shows how the range of conflicts narrowed considerably over the 1970s and discusses the extent to which this is related to the dominance of auteur films in the era.

This is the first extensive overview of Swedish art history written in English. The essays by Swedish scholars of art history present a broad and varied collection of texts including periodic overviews that cover prehistorical times to the 21st century, as well as thematic studies that introduce discussions on everything from political contexts, artist groups and organizations to aspects of gender, race, ethnicity and nationality. The reader is invited to a range of Swedish objects of study from rock carvings, political posters and contemporary performance art to medieval churches and railway stations. Each of the eighteen contributors gives their unique viewpoint on the subject and as a result, Swedish Art History invites you into a mosaic of possible readings on the visual culture of Sweden. We are proud to be able to present this book as an open access publication and hope that it will come in handy in the teaching of Swedish art history internationally. The anthology contains twenty essays and is richly illustrated with 226 colour plates.

It presents the rules and the institutional details of these reforms and discuss their implications for retirement behavior, the general state of the economy and the political environment. Parallel to the development of the public pension system, a comprehensive and quite complex occupational pension system has emerged. This report describes the historical background and the institutional details of the four largest agreement-based occupational pension schemes in Sweden.

Over the past two decades deteriorated equivalence in Swedish schools has resulted in that teachers are increasingly faced with large differences regarding students' potential, motivation and school results. However, within Swedish research concerning the role of school in the multicultural society, focus has not been on teachers' experiences, but rather problem-oriented studies on teaching materials, students' opinions and school policies. The objective of the article is to first, on the basis of Anglo-Saxon research and theories, present an analytical tool consisting of four possible strategies for teaching in a multicultural society. The analytical tool will be used to, out from semi-structured interviews, compare and discuss seven upper secondary school teachers' experiences from teaching history in the Swedish multicultural society. To justify the relevance of such a discussion in a Swedish context, a brief presentation of Swedish research in the field are given. The teachers interviewed have primarily been chosen from their reputation of being talented, ambitious, and that they believe they have found workable models in their teaching. The comparison and discussion of the seven teachers' experiences show no clear pattern in relation to the four strategies as apparent from the analysis tool. It rather seems as it is foremost the teachers own background, values and educational context that affects what strategies they choose in their teaching. The result can be interpreted as if the space of interpretations regarding the school's intentions are (too) great, which may be an expression of lack of clarity in objectives and guidelines from the current school politics.

This article analyses the history and rationale behind "the Swedish model" of regulating prostitution. The most controversial and debated part of this model is the 1999 ban on purchases of sexual services. To be fully understood the ban and the comprehensive policy regime of which it is a part, the new model has to be placed within a broader framework of policy areas such as gender, sexuality, and social welfare. Thus, the contemporary policy regime will be traced back to the mid-1970s when gender norms and sexual mores were renegotiated in Sweden, which in turn led to a radical reconsideration of men's role and responsibility in heterosexual prostitution. Also, the outcomes, critiques, and controversies of "the Swedish model" will be discussed. A reduction of demand for prostitution implies changes on many levels, both societal and individual. From a normative point of view, it has been women who have played a leading role when it comes to working for such a change. A radical change would presuppose men's participation in the process. If so, the crucial question is: Is there reason to believe that men are prepared to engage in anti-sexist politics that can challenge existing beliefs about gender difference and the idea of men's rights to use women in prostitution for their sexual purposes?

In Sweden, immigrant students with a non-European background perform worse in school than students from the majority group. Research has so far focused on language problems, and political investments have been concentrated around developing immigrant student's language because it is hard to manage school without a functional language. However, social science in school also rests on cultural understanding, which is difficult if you are not a part of the culture. This is certainly true for the subject of history, which has a strong tradition of fostering a historical nationalistic canon. By analyzing the items in the national test in history relative to how the immigrant students perform, this study investigates whether there are certain types of items that, on the one hand, discriminate against them and, on the other hand, work to their advantage. This is important knowledge if we want to be able to make fair and just assessments.

The purpose of this article is to trace meaning conveyed in narratives of Sweden and "Swedishness" in history textbooks published between 1931 and 2009. Its objective is also to show how narratives have been transformed and changed over time, and what factors may have influenced these changes. A third aim is to show which of these narratives are expressed by some contemporary students. The empirical material consists of 52 history textbooks and 54 student texts. The research has a hermeneutical perspective, and draws on methods of narrative theory and conceptual history. It identifies six meta-narratives in the texts: the narrative of neutrality, the narrative of the prosperous country, the narrative of the welfare country, the narrative of the role model country of democracy, the narrative of the stranger, and the narrative of the world's most gender-equal country. Each of these meta-narratives has different narrative forms that contain different protagonists generating, in turn, different categories of sub-narratives. This article argues that, while all textbook narratives are present in the students' texts, they are often constructed in different temporal contexts, and have a slightly different moral perspective.

Eastern Film Corporation was a local studio but its films were distributed and screened throughout New England with the exception of Rhode Island. At least twelve of its films, of various genres, which seemed to have generous budgets for size of the studio, have survived. Eastern's prime years of business were brief, 1915-1917. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the building in 1917 and the expenses it would cost to repair it too high for its original founder, Frederick S. Peck, a wealthy Barrington politician. Nevertheless, the studio staggered on throughout the 1920s.

Around 2005, the Swedish History Museum (SHM) in Stockholm reworked their Vikings exhibition, aiming to question simplistic and erroneous understandings of past group identities. In the process, all references to the Sámi were removed from the exhibition texts. This decision has been criticised by experts on Sámi pasts. In this article, it is argued that we can talk about a Sámi ethnic identity from the Early Iron Age onwards. The removal of references to the Sámi in the exhibition texts is discussed accordingly, as well as the implicit misrepresentations, stereotypes and majority attitudes that are conveyed through spatial distribution, choice of illustrations, lighting, colour schemes and the exhibition texts. Finally, some socio-political reasons for the avoidance of Sámi issues in Sweden are suggested, including an enduring colonialist relation to this minority.

A three-language book Swedish, English and Arabic, that includes the information about the project entitled: Photograph and Film for freedom and Democracy, that funded by Swedish Institute, and Organized by Ibn Rushd Association and pertnership with Yemeni Idintity Organization and Lund University, among other partners. Also, it contains the thirty photos that have been shown in Yemen Art Exhibition, Malmo, Lund and Kristianstad.

This article explores the different meanings of "Europe" in Swedish history textbooks over the course of the 20th century. Utilising the concept of myth, this textbook analysis looks at how the older history of Europe, and Sweden in relation to Europe, had changed by the end of the century. In particular, it examines the way in which Europe as a historically coherent entity is becoming attached to the idea of European economic, cultural and political co-operation in the wake of the Second World War. By using both quantitative and qualitative methods the study reveals that Europe as a concept has altered its meaning over time. Further, the study shows that the amount of text on Europe as an entity altogether increased in Swedish history textbooks in the latter part of the 20th century.

The excavation of the Sanctuary of Poseidon at Kalaureia in 1894 marks the beginning of Swedish archaeological fieldwork in Greece. During a couple of hot summer months, two philologists from Uppsala University, Sam Wide (1861-1918) and Lennart Kjellberg (1857-1936), worked in the sanctuary together with the architect Sven Kristenson (1858-1937), the Greek foreman Pankalos and around twenty local workmen. In 1997, the Swedish Institute at Athens began new excavations at the sanctuary. This thesis examines the beginnings of Swedish fieldwork in Greece. Within the framework of a cultural history of archaeology, inspired by archaeological ethnography and the New Cultural History, it explores how archaeology functioned as a cultural practice in the late nineteenth century. A micro-historical methodology makes use of a wide array of different source material connected to the excavation of 1894, its prelude and aftermath. The thesis takes the theoretical position that the premises for archaeological knowledge production are outcomes of contemporary power structures and cultural politics. Through an analysis of how the archaeologists constructed their self-images through a set of idealized stereotypes of bourgeois masculinity, academic politics of belonging is highlighted. The politics of belonging existed also on a national level, where the Swedish archaeologists entered into a competition with other foreign actors to claim heritage sites in Greece. The idealization of classical Greece as a birthplace of Western values, in combination with contemporary colonial and racist cultural frameworks in Europe, created particular gazes through which the modern country was appropriated and judged. These factors all shaped the practices through which archaeological knowledge was created at Kalaureia. Some excavations tend to have extensive afterlives through the production of histories of archaeology. Therefore, this thesis also explores the representations of the 1894 excavation in the historiography of Swedish classical archaeology. It highlights the strategies by which the excavation at Kalaureia has served to legitimize further Swedish engagements in Greek archaeology, and explores the way in which historiography shapes our professional identities.
