The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States brought the issue of terrorism to the forefront of American attention and controversy. To determine how to prevent further destruction, it is necessary to understand the shadowy phenomenon that causes it. Who are the terrorists? What are their motives? What are the roots of this form of violence, and will it come to an end? What exactly is terrorism?

"This book examines two key themes in terrorism studies, the radicalization process and counter-terrorism policies, through the lens of social networks. Despite multiple calls to arms to approach terrorism through the lens of network methods, social networks are still under-researched in terrorism studies. This book aims to show that networks should be at the forefront when analysing terrorists, but also when assessing the responses to their actions. The volume makes a unique contribution by addressing two relatively new themes for terrorism studies. First it puts social network analysis at the forefront - a perspective, and set of methods often identified as crucial to future breakthroughs in the field. Second, the contributions tackle the role of the Internet in the process of radicalization, a highly debated topic in the field today. In addition, the book provides a valuable mix of review essays, critical essays, and original empirical studies, including detailed case studies tracing the transformation of normal individuals into violent radicals. This balanced approach is also found in the topics covered by the authors, as well as their academic disciplines, which include computer science, geography, history, engineering, and criminology as well as political science. Many of the true advances in terrorism studies depend on the successful collaboration of multi-disciplinary teams, each with a different set of methodological and conceptual tools. This book reflects the newfound diversity in this field and is a true product of its time. This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism studies, social networks, security studies, sociology, criminology and IR in general"--
This volume contains standards and goals that deal with virtually every facet of the matter of disorders and terrorism. They are aimed at civil authorities, police, courts, corrections, and the community. There are explicit proposals for training police and law enforcement agencies in preventive measures that can be taken against mass violence, for the tactical management of disorders, and for the deterrence of terrorism as well as the evaluation of threats of acts of disorders and terrorism. There are very detailed plans that the police in state and municipalities will find most useful during times of rioting or other extraordinary social upheavals. The task force has written extensively on the role the courts should play during and after such occurrences, including recommendations on how to deal with trials of cases arising out of incidents of terrorism. There are also suggestions for the news media to follow in the reporting of occurrences and of the trials that follow. The number of prison disorders in recent years has produced a response from the task force in terms of institutional conditions and correctional objectives, particularly with respect to persons convicted of terrorist acts. The appendixes contain articles dealing with an overview of international terrorism, terrorism and new weapons technology, and terrorism in Argentina, Canada, and West Germany. There is also a chronology of terroristic, quasi-terroristic, and political violence in the United States, covering the period from 1965 to 1976 ; Includes indexes ; Includes bibliographical references (pages 597-634) ; Statement of the administrator / Richard W.
