"In this collection, Cătălina Florina Florescu focuses on several contemporary Romanian female playwrights with residencies in Europe and the U.S. In their bold works, written by female playwrights who are academics, activists, and performers, we are invited to discover variations in the modus operandi of the dramatic language itself from metaphorical to matter-of-fact approaches. Furthermore, while all these playwrights speak Romanian, they also think and operate in various other languages, such as Romani, German, French, Italian, and American English. This book facilitates scholars and students to discover contemporary issues related to Romanian society as presented heavily from a feminine angle and to reveal intersectional issues as seen and applied to dramatic characters in a post-communist country from some authors who experienced communism first hand. The book is also an invitation to reinvent how we teach dramatic literature by offering 20 interactive, exploratory activities"--

Racial reckoning was a recurrent theme throughout the summer of 2020, a response to George Floyd's murder and the unprecedented impact of COVID on marginalized groups. Theater and Crisis proposes a literary and theatrical study of how Floyd's killing could possibly happen in the aftermath of the Civil Rights era, and in the supposedly post-racial era following the election of Barack Obama. In the days and months following Floyd's death, there were nightly protests in streets across the United States and broader world. At the same time, theater performances were forced to shift online to video conferencing platforms and to find new ways to engage audiences. In each case, groups made shared meaning through storytelling and narrative, a liberatory process of myth-making and reverence that author Patrice D. Rankine calls "epiphanic encoding."
Rather than approaching the problem of racial reckoning through history, where periodization and progress are dominant narratives, Theater and Crisis argues that myth and memory allow for better theorization about recurring events from the past, their haunting, and what these apparent ghosts ask of us. Building on the study of myth as active, processual storytelling, Rankine acknowledges that it grounds and orients groups toward significant events. Theater and Crisis aligns narratives about Emmett Till, Trayvon Martin, and George Floyd, among others, with ancient, mythic figures such as Christ, Dionysus, Oedipus, and Moses. As living and verbal visitations, these stories performed on stage encode the past through their epiphanies in the present, urging audiences toward shared meaning.
Rankine traces the cyclical hauntings of race through the refiguring of mythic stories across the past 75 years in the plays of James Baldwin, Ntozake Shange, Antoinette Nwandu, and many more, and in response to flashpoints in US racial history, such as the 1955 lynching of Emmett Till, the upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s, the wars on drugs and crime, and the continued violence against and disenfranchisement of Black people into the twenty-first century. Theater and Crisis explores the appearance of myth on the American stage and showcases the ongoing response by the theatrical establishment to transform the stage into a space for racial reckoning. This timely book is essential reading for scholars of theater studies, classics, and American studies.
Abstract Working in international organizations (IOs) is not always a pleasure. Contradictory external demands make it difficult to do the right thing, constant failures in the field lead to frustration, and hierarchical structures require "emotional labor" on the part of IO staff. While we know that IO leadership therefore engages in self-legitimation practices to strengthen employee motivation and maintain organizational cohesion, we know little about the actual results of these activities. To address this gap, I focus on the perceptions of "ordinary" IO employees. Based on seventy-five in-depth interviews with IO staff in two different IOs, the United Nations (UN) Secretariat and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), I develop a typology of five different staff responses to internal legitimation. I show that leadership's legitimation efforts can not only result in (i) acceptance and adoption of the given narratives but also lead to (ii) criticism, (iii) toleration, (iv) cynicism, or even (v) exit of IO employees. Thus, ironically, the very leadership activities that are supposed to foster internal stability can also backfire and contribute to the destabilization of the IO. Building on these findings, I discuss two factors that influence IO employees' perception of self-legitimation practices and are crucial for their success: the credibility of IO leaders and the right balance between glossing over and self-criticism in their legitimation narratives. I conclude by arguing that, contrary to common belief, legitimation and critique are not irreconcilable opposites. Rather, self-criticism can be an integral part of successful legitimation.
Volume 2 of Theater(s) and Public Sphere in a Global and Digital Society continues the exploration of the fundamental contribution that artistic and cultural forms bring to social dynamics and how these can consolidate cohabitation and create meaningfulness, in addition to fulfilling economic and regulatory needs. As symbolic forms of collective social practices, artistic and cultural forms weave together the meaning of territories, contexts, and peoples, and also of the generations who traverse them. This volume examines several case studies in the relationship between cultural forms and society. These forms of meaning interact with the social imaginary, mediate marginalization, transform barriers into bridges, and are indispensable tools for any social coexistence and its continuous rethinking in everyday life. The various epistemic approaches present here refer to sociology, theatre studies, cultural studies, psychology, economy of culture, and social statistics which observe theatre as a social phenomenon.Contributors are: Maria Shevstova, Ilaria Riccioni, Roberta Paltrinieri, Gerhard Glüher, Raimondo Guarino, Mariselda Tessarolo, Raffaele Federici, Marco Serino, Maria Grazia Turri, Elena Olesina, Elena Polyudova, Marisol Facuse, Vincenzo Del Gaudio, Laura Gemini, Stefano Brilli, Jessica Camargo Molano, Annalisa Cicerchia, Simona Staffieri and Giulia Cavrini

The article is devoted to the study of folklore activities of Ukrainian playwright, writer, poet, translator, theatrical and cultural figure, director, philanthropist, director of the first Ukrainian professional theater, the so-called "theater of luminaries", Mykhailo Starytsky (1840–1904) and the founder of the Ukrainian national opera, composer, pianist, conductor, folklorist, public figure Mykola Lysenko (1842–1912). The main attention is paid to the analysis of the playwright's use of descriptions of rituals, customs, traditions, folk morals of Ukrainians, as well as examples of the use of small folk genres, phraseology. It was found that for the Ukrainian community the study and preservation of folk traditions in the second half of the 19th century played an important role in the formation of national self-identification and national consciousness. The origins, features and functions of ethnography in Starytsky's works are determined, in particular it is proved that the playwright's use of descriptions of Christian and pre-Christian rites was primarily aimed at a true image of traditional Ukrainian society, an important component of which were ancient rituals, games, music and drama actions. It is shown how the rites of the winter and summer cycles of the folk calendar are reflected in various ways in the artist's work, which is the most saturated with various bright rituals and customs. It is proved that the study of folk music significantly influenced the composer's creativity. It is confirmed, that folklore in the works of Starytsky and Lysenko had a positive effect on the formation of the Ukrainian professional theater as a music and drama one.
