ABSTRACT Recently, researchers in the field of linguistics, psycholinguistics, psychology of language, translation studies and other related fields have shown an increased interest in studying linguistic features of discourse. An increasing amount of studies on deception, means of suggestion and manipulation in discourse clearly indicate that there is a relationship between the use of function words, discourse cognitive compexity and speakers' emotional states, his/her hidden intentions. Function words as 'style words' (Tausczik & Pennebaker, 2010) including pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions, articles are processed automatically due to their procedural meaning. This paper is focused on the application aspects of two computerized methods – Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC), and Textanz that are sensitive to function words. Designed by J. Pennebaker, social psychologist from University of Texas in Austin, and his colleagues (Pennebaker et al., 2007), LIWC as a text analysis program that counts words in linguistic and psychological categories helps a researcher detect meaning in a wide variety of experimental settings, including to demonstrate information distortion in political discourse and translation. Our previous investigation on deception validated LIWC's potential in identifying information distortion in English political discourse. The current study was aimed at verifying the above mentioned programs' ability to detect deviations in translating. The authors found that such translation universals as simplification, normalization, and explicitation are markers of information distortion, or the "third code" (Frawley, 1984), in the target versions. Another important finding was that they can be easily traced in English-Ukrainian parallel and comparable corpora through the use of LIWC and Textanz – reliable detectors of linguistic means with mostly procedural meaning.
The article deals with the issue on translating legal terms from Ukrainian into English on the basis of a case study of a newly-coined term in Ukrainian legislation – 'maloznachna sprava'. The relevance of the topic of legal translation from English into Ukrainian and vice versa has become especially acute in light of the Ukraine-EU approximation agreement. While the introduction of simplified civil proceedings is itself a step towards the approximation of Ukrainian legislation to the EU, the next stage will inevitably be comparing and contrasting the existing terms within the Ukrainian and EU civil procedures. Ukrainian simplified procedure aims at considering insignificant cases (Ukr. – 'maloznachni spravy') in a speedy manner, while EU accelerated and simplified civil procedure uses the term 'small claims' for cases with a claim value for up to EUR 5,000. Obviously, these notions are not equivalent, but their meaning overlaps, creating pitfalls for translation. Thus, for proper translation, it is important to specify how the concept of small claims fits into Ukraine's national context. The notion of insignificant cases illustrates the relevance of the linguistic study of legal translations, as well as a need for the consolidation of practical achievements in the field of translation of legal discourse and, in particular, legal neologisms. The purpose of legal translation is to create a text that will be interpreted in the same way by legal professionals in the target legal system as it would be in the original legal system. The aim of translation is not to erase linguistic and cultural differences but to accommodate them, fully and unapologetically. The challenge is to convey the legal text as a fragment of a living legal system. When translating, a translator should strive for equivalence, bearing in mind the harmonisation and approximation of terminologies. The linguistic approximation of national Ukrainian legal terms to the EU terminology should be carefully considered to avoid their misinterpretation with the supranatural terms. The author emphasises the necessity to perform concept analysis between the terms in the EU and Ukraine simplified procedures and comes to the conclusion that despite having surface similarity to the EU term 'small claim', the Ukrainian term 'maloznachna sprava' is, in fact, a much wider concept. A range of translations of legal neologisms are described in the article, and the need to use a literal translation of the term is substantiated. As a result of the analysis of possible translation options and the ECtHR translation precedent, it is recommended that the term 'maloznachna sprava' should be translated as 'insignificant case' within the sphere of Ukrainian civil procedure. Keywords: legal translation, Ukrainian-English translation, small claim, insignificant case.
The paper deals with the use of vocal translations in music education. As it is widely known, in the modern world practice there are two ways of performing foreign vocal music. The first one is to perform in the author's language and the other one is to perform in the language of the listeners. Both of them have the right to exist and nobody could claim one of them as an inadmissible or prohibited. On the contrary, world tendencies towards democratization, pluralism and tolerance for coexistence of opposing points of view imply the performer's right to interpret musical works including opera in different ways. While usage of vocal translations in concerts and stage is partially described, their uses in training still need an approach. This paper presents how we use vocal translation in following disciplines: vocal (solo singing), opera studio, conducting class, accompaniment, music literature (music history). It is shown that Ukrainian language translations are widely used as directly (for singing in translation) and indirectly (for understanding the content of musical works). According to G. Hansburg one should prefer a semantic layer, while preserving the phonetic layer is problematic if the singer is trying to sing in a foreign language. This is a reason for Kyiv Operetta Theatre and Kyiv Municipal Opera Theatre for using vocal translations for opera performing. On the other hand a lot of theatres, like Kyiv National Opera perform operas in original language only. This situations means that singer should able to perform operas both in original language and in translation. Moreover, even while singing in original language singer should fully understand what do he (or she) sings about. Ukrainian translations are needed for this purpose. This is also significant for students who learn conducting or accompany opera areas. However, the lack of educational and methodological and textbook literature in the Ukrainian language is noted, as well as registers of vocal translations of opera and chamber vocal music. These problems of Ukrainian educational have to be resolve in next years.

The article analyzes the peculiarities of the composition of diplomatic documents. Special attention is paid to the usage of terms of the diplomatic speech genre. The purpose of the article is to study the features of the lexical structure of diplomatic documents, namely the terminology of these documents and the translation into Ukrainian. It is important to follow the traditional rules of diplomatic protocol (the use of forms of politeness, conciseness, formality), which is reflected in the use of certain lexical material, including specific terminology. Particular attention should be paid to diplomatic correspondence. There are four main types of vision for diplomatic correspondence: notes, letters, memoranda and memos. The protocol formulas proposed by the requisites: "The Government of Ukraine has the honor to inform the government about (name of the country) that (about the next)…". The form of the appeal depends on to whom the appeal is addressed: Address to the Ambassador, Minister: "Dear Mr. / Mrs. Minister / Ambassador / or "Your Excellency"; appeal to all other diplomatic representatives: "Sir / Madam"; to the monarchs: "Your Majesty"; to the Pope: "Your Holiness. Among the most productive are the following models of formation of terms-nouns of diplomatic documents are: 1) V + ment: agree - agreement ; 2) V + (t) ion / V + tion / V + ation / V + cation: access - accession, extradite - extradition, ratify - ratification; 3) A + (i) ty / A + -cy: excellent - Excellency. 4) V + ing: acknowledging, agreeing, believing, feeling. As a result of detailed analysis, priority methods of translation of terms into Ukrainian have been used. Examples of terminological homonymy have been given and methods of translating proper names, etiquette formulas of diplomatic correspondence have been analyzed. (де V – дієслівна основа, A – прикметник): 1) V+ ment : agree – agreement, attach – attachment, rapprochement; 2) V+ (t)ion / V+ tion / V+ ation / V+ cation: access – accession, extradite – extradition, ratify – ratification, denunciate – denunciation; 3) A+(i)ty / A+-cy: belligerent –belligerency, royal – royalty, excellent – Excellency. 4) V+ing: acknowledging, agreeing, believing, feeling, deploring, inviting. Особливу увагу слід приділити дипломатичному листуванню. Існує чотири основних типи бачення дипломатичної кореспонденції: записки, листи, меморандуми та записки В результаті детального аналізу були використані пріоритетні методи перекладу термінів українською мовою. Наведено приклади термінологічної омонімії та проаналізовано методи перекладу власних імен, етикетних формул дипломатичного листування.
International audience ; This article is a study of translation as a paradigmatic clue of the problematics that is presently debated within French contemporary thought, especially in its ethical current. The main theses Tiphaine Samoyault introduces in "Translation and Violence" (2020). The author, as the title of her work suggests, tries to demonstrate the active negativity part which is present in any translation. Thus she breaks away from most of the dominant discourses which are idyllic since they see in translation a gesture of hospitality, a way of meeting and exchanging with the other. Indeed according to her, there exists a negative part which is inherent to translation, since it means the appropriation of a foreign text, the suppression of its language and the deterritorialization, not only geographical, but also cultural and historical of the other. One must admit that this negativity has seldom been researched thoroughly in the scientific works on translation. The aim of this article will thus be to create a network of, and explain the main notions which Samoyault is leaning on to develop her thesis: antagonism and agonism in translation, différence and différend, linguistic hospitality, discursive ethics, the sensible turn in translation thought, and the ethics of non-translation. One will thus be lead to underline the political dimension which Samoyault's stands implies, intentionally. For in translation the solution of the clashes (of course in language, but also in the various, heterogenic views) remains as a goal that will always be out of reach and is always going away. There follows that a continuous and frantic quest of a consensus which would satisfy both sides is pure fancy. The aim of the article is to draw a map and set in perspective the theses Samoyault contends, as well as constituting a reading guide for a complex and demanding book as a concept. Its ambition is also to retain a pre-prandial value, thus inviting its readers to immerse themselves into the source text. ; Статтю ...

In the article we investigate lingual manifestation of the national, national idea, features of mentality in the system of the author's language thinking of Vasyl Stefanyk and the peculiarities of their reproduction in Russian translations, we emphasize on the objective loses and loses caused by subjective factors, especially by ideologists of the Soviet epoch. It is stated that in translation it is important to convey deep moments peculiar to the writer's outlook and his points of view. A translator can't remain indifferent to the emotions and ideas of the original but he also shouldn't turn the target text into the demonstration of his own opinions turning the evaluation into the tendentious direction. Target texts by M. Lyashko, H. Shypov, A. Dyeev, V. Rossels have been analyzed, especially the translations of key realia in the context of national language thinking. Russian translators due to ideological taboo couldn't carry ideas and pathos of the national liberation fight of the Ukrainian nation, couldn't convey high spirit of patriotic feelings inspired by this fight that arise from novellas "Maria"("Mary"), "Syny"("Sons"), "Did Hryts" ("Grandfather Hryts"), "Mezha"("Boundary").We summarize that optimum translation was defined not by the original but by the ideological "permission". One more kind of censorship- the censorship of a translator- emerged so very often historical authenticity of the original was distorted, the feeling of a special emotional tonality was lost, ideological world outlooking core was washed away, the principle moment of pathos comprehension was lost.Key words: linguospace, translation, novella, target text, social political realia, translation strategy, translator's censorship. ; The article presents the experience of translating and commenting of ancient texts. The research object is the well-known work of Lucian: «How to Write History». Justifying the importance of the subject for Ukrainian humanities and translation studies, the authors offer in the first part of the paper a brief overview of Ukrainian translations of works of ancient historiography, occasionally analyzing the scholarly apparatus and quality of historical and literary comments accompanying the editions of these texts. The main part of the paper considers methodological approaches tocommenting of ancient texts. Considering the specifics of ancient historiographical material the authors identify among these approaches two major ones. The first approach is defined by focusingon the reader. If we discuss the translation of ancient historiographical sources, the contemporary recipient of such literary material necessarily reckons with an audience of specialists, although differing in their particular levels of qualifications — ranging from a student to a professional scholar. Therefore, comments on such texts have to be specialized and not require explanations of various issues, rather, such that can be combined by the concept "loci communes". Respect for the reader and credibility in his educational background will restrain the commentator from making unnecessary interpretations relating to famous historical figures or mytological phenomena. However, focusing on the educated reader of translations involves a special thoughtful approach to the use of terms in literary texts. For historiographical works such kind of terms are titles of goverment officials, military officials, geographic names, terms for weapons and military fortifications. Because Lucian was a professional orator his approach to writing history was mainly rhetorical and he used terms from the scope of logic, rhetorics and poetics. The translation of such terms often require historical and philological investigation and therefore need historical and philological commentary. Defining methodological approaches to the comments, authors consider another important aspect related to the explanation of Lotman's statement, that comment depends on the type of commented text. Lucian's writing has it's own specific features, such as irony and parody, which is typical for the age of decline of antiquity in the late hellenistic period. In considering that fact the authorsalso share the opinion that the comment on such type of text should serve as an immediate solution to the problems of interpretation. Moreover, a comment to an ancient text involves updating a possible dialogue with the ideas of the commented text. For those who are interested in the analysis of historiography as a cultural practice, Lucian's treatise is definitely an interesting and valuable resource. That is why the comment to his work should have two main emphases: to aim to place Lucian's work within the contemporary literary culture and to place it within the dominant contemporary trends in history as well.

In the paper the linguistic measuring of the post-event situation is probed using the concepts of A. Badiou, G. Deleuze and J. Derrida. The post-event situation is examined as the paradoxical state of impossibility and necessity of naming. Practices of overcoming of event's indescribability are investigated through the «language of objective situation» and «language of subjective situation». The problem of uncommunicativeness of political event's truth is being put and it is suggested to consider subjective textualization of the event as the process of the continual translation. ; В статье языковое измерение ситуации после события исследуется с опорой на концепты А. This conversation by social philosopher Theodor Adorno, a representative of the critical theory of society, with Hellmut Becker, a political publicist and theorist of education, took place in 1966 and was published in the collection of Theodor Adorno`s philosophical and educational works Upbringing to responsibility. By this conversation Adorno and Becker critically examined the many aspects of the then West German education, which they believed did not fulfill their main task – it did not encourage the representatives of West German youth to become socially active people. According to Adorno and Becker, then education did not upbringing them as members of a democratic society, as people who must independently apply their own minds in a society whose democratic changes must be completely unchanged. Reflecting on the goal of proper education, these German intellectuals have defined the essence of democracy as the embodiment of such political governance, which requires the active use of intelligence by any member of society. Thus, the consciousness of an individual, activated by the educational effect of education on himself, education, which understands the correct purpose of its work, can withstand the influence on itself of the social ideology of a conformist society, the reality of which has distinct signs of cultural stagnation. Adorno and Becker agreed to call such man as responsibility man. However, in their opinion, education that holds on the traditional principles of upbringing leads to the formation of such a rational adaptation of man to the social world, which only increases the extent of its conformism. They also called the consequence of the influence of this social ideology on the human consciousness of her inability to hold on to the experience has gained in the society that makes a person a thing. Therefore, these German intellectuals drew attention to the phenomenon of primary and preschool education of the child, also noted the peculiarities of the period of puberty, suggesting that they be understood as possible factors for the successful overcoming of traditional upbringing. According to Adorno and Becker, by making to updated upbringing, the new education must effectively apply in its process the spontaneity of personal thinking of man. At the same time this unity of education and education effectively enabling the process of individualization of a man and will destroy the ideological tendency to preserve the principle of anti-individualism in the upbringing. This will happen due to the active participation of the new individuum, a person who is able to consciously resist any ideological influences on the collective consciousness of society.
