Traditional Islamic cities have generally gathered orientalized gazes and perspectives, picking up from misconceptions and stereotypes that evolved during the seconf half of the 19th century and were perpectuated by colonialism. More recent scholarship has shed light on the urban organization and composition of such tissues; most of them confined to old quarters or historical centres of thriving contemporary cities within the Arab-Muslim world. In fact, one of the most striking features has been the unveiling of layered urban assemblages where exterior agents have somehow launched or interrupted an apparent islamicized continuum. Primarly, this paper wishes to search for external political factors that have designed regularly geometrized patterns in medium-sized Arab towns. For that, two case studies from different geographies - Maghreb and the Near East - will be morphologically analysed through updated urban surveys. Whereas Nablus (Palestine) ows the urban matrix of its old town to its Roman past, in Azemmour's medina (Morocco) it is still possible to track the thin European early-modern colonial stratum. However, both cases show how regularity patterns challenge Western concepts of geometrical design to embrace levels of rationality related to tradional Islamic urban forms, societal configurations and built environment. Urban morphology becomes a fundamental tool for articulating the history with me processes of sedimentation and evolution in order to read current urban prints and dynamics. El trabajo desempeñado por Cuthbert en este libro es un extraordinario análisis no sólo acerca del estado de las artes en cuanto a teoría urbana, también nos entrega una visión crítica del vínculo entre la economía política y el diseño urbano. La ciudad, de acuerdo a lo expresado en el libro, no sólo está sujeta al escrutinio histórico, es un reflejo de un discurso filosófico que mediante una producción simbólica da cuenta de relaciones de clase, de género entre otras categorías, mediatizadas por aspectos culturales y políticos. Cuthbert demuestra un tremendo dominio al remover toda ingenuidad del discurso urbano, demostrando la profunda interconexión entre la forma de una ciudad y la ideología predominante. Against the background of continuing urban growth, cities are constantly faced with new challenges. Above all, a strong increase in the number of residents must secure the supply of living space. In addition, the attractiveness of a city depends not only on the available living space and its price, but also on the quality of life in the city. The term quality of life usually refers to factors that can have a positive effect on a person's well-being. Quality of life is characterized by aspects such as educational opportunities, health and nature.
As a result, nature is an important criterion in the quality of life and also shapes the appearance of the city. Parks, playgrounds or street trees are just a few of the forms that can be found in cities. In addition, the city green takes over many different functions. These range from economic and urban features to social and ecological purposes. Especially the ecological aspect is becoming more and more important in the course of climatic changes. In this context, a sustainable urban development should be striven for in order to secure urban green spaces, such as the "Leipzig Charter for a Sustainable European City".
The challenges for municipalities in dealing with urban green spaces are manifold. The reason for this is the different usage requirements that affect the urban green space through different user groups. In addition to the changed demands, the financial resources available also play an important role. At present, it is difficult to reconcile the different demands placed on an area with the financial resources available.
Therefore, this paper examines a new approach to Green Urban Labs in relation to the development and safeguarding of urban greens. In this respect, literature searches are used to shed light on the foundations, goals and problems of urban green. In a further part, the model project "Green Urban Labs" will be examined. In addition to further literature research and expert interviews, the case study "From Hausacker to Urban Green" in the district Riemke of the city Bochum will be used to shed light on the goals and implementation measures of the project.
Recommendations for action are derived from the findings. On the one hand, the recommendations should support the consolidation of the model project after the end of the project period. On the other hand, they should serve as good examples and points of reference for other municipalities that can benefit from the new approach.

Local governments through smart cities try to position themselves before the challenge of attracting investment and improving public services. In order to be more efficient, participatory, and sustainable, the city must be transformed through the use of new technologies, offering a better quality of life for its inhabitants. The concept of smart cities is now fashionable, so its definition is ambiguous due to the plurality of approaches from which the urban context is analyzed (Holland, 2008). This multitude of meanings of the concept, translated into Spanish as an intelligent city, has generated very varied typologies and a very broad literature on the subject, which has been increasing during the last years focused on studies on sustainability, the environment, governance, mobility, housing, multiculturalism, energy and technology among others, although from a more theoretical than practical perspective. The objective of this article is to know the paradigm of smart cities in the framework of urban governance, understood as «a new way of governing (.) a new method according to which society is governed» (Rhodes, 1996: 652-653), and all this from a descriptive-deductive methodology providing a conceptual structure in its beginnings to progressively get to know the findings of the research. Thus, this proposal seeks to respond to the relationship between the smart city, also known as smart city, and urban governance in the face of future challenges of participation, public ethics, sustainability, effectiveness and efficiency, transparency and accountability. of counts. It is not surprising that the main conclusions of this research do not place technology and derivatives, as the great tool or contribution of smart cities, but rather, the use and application that is made of them to improve the quality of life of their citizens. This report provides the guiding framework for cities to transform their relationship with nature and to drive an urban development that leaves natural capital enriched and not depleted, a vision that the Colombian government has defined as "BiodiverCities". Building on this country's leadership, the World Economic Forum and Colombia have partnered to scale a global initiative with a major ambition: BiodiverCities by 2030. We have the opportunity to design more resilient and adaptive futures for cities across the globe by drawing together multidisciplinary expertise and spurring nature-positive entrepreneurial approaches in the next decade. We encourage city officials, the private sector and the whole urban community to harvest and spread the evidence on the real opportunities for cities to reverse their impact on nature and to build an enabling environment in their own city contexts whereby biodiversity and nature-based solutions are brought to the centre of the urban agenda. ; Bogotá D.C.

This article proposes an inspection of the Latin-american cities at beginning of the XXI century from the conflict point of view. On one hand the cumulative conflicts that remain unsolved despite decades, which still require high-priority attention. Among others: the quality access to domiciliary public services, the opportune enjoyment of education and social programs and services, health, social welfare and housing, the exclusion, and social, economic, politic and physical-space segregation. Secondly the conflicts related to mobility forms, the political-administrative decentralization processes, hunger, misery and unemployment, new crimes style; the population's size of cities with high concentration volumes and functions, and the urban violence. As well, it is present the dilemma about globalization and the local issue, the social agents influence, and the discussion on urban form and town planning. The article ends with several reflections on the approached aspects. ; Aquí se plantea una mirada a las ciudades latinoamericanas de comienzos del siglo XXI desde los conflictos. Por una parte los conflictos acumulados, y que aun no han logrado ser resueltos a pesar del paso de los años, y que aun requieren atención prioritaria. Entre otros están: el acceso con calidad a los servicios públicos domiciliarios, el disfrute oportuno de programas y servicios sociales de educación, salud, bienestar social y vivienda, los problemas de exclusión y segregación social, económica, política y físico espacial. En segunda instancia están los conflictos del presente relacionados con las formas de movilidad, los procesos político administrativos de descentralización, el hambre, la miseria y el desempleo, las nuevas formas que asume el delito; el tamaño de las ciudades con altos volúmenes de concentración de la población y funciones, y la violencia urbana. Así mismo están presentes el dilema por lo global y lo local, el papel que cumplen los agentes sociales y las discusiones sobre la forma urbana y el modelo de ciudad. El artículo remata con un conjunto de reflexiones sobre los aspectos antes abordados.

Objetivo: La presente investigación tiene como objetivo el estudio del "shrinkage" de Ferrol, mediante la descripción tanto histórica como actual del crecimiento urbano de la ciudad, además del análisis de las posibles causas y factores determinantes de este proceso de encogimiento urbano, así como los indicadores para medirlo. Metodología: El presente trabajo desarrolla una metodología de triangulación de métodos cuantitativos, cualitativos y empíricos de forma simultánea. En el del estudio de Ferrol ha sido de gran importancia el análisis de la incidencia de las políticas urbanas en el fenómeno del urban shrinkage. Además, para poder determinar las potencialidades y debilidades de la ciudad se ha realizado un análisis FODA. Dicho análisis ha permitido plantear diferentes estrategias y acciones con el fin de paliar los efectos negativos de este fenómeno. Conclusiones: Como primeros resultados podemos destacar que Ferrol sufre una fuerte deslocalización de la industria naval que repercute en la economía, la demografía y sobre todo en aspectos sociales de calidad de vida. No menos importante es el proceso de suburbanización que comparte con la vecina ciudad de Narón, hecho que agrava la situación. Originalidad: Si bien la literatura ha estudiado ampliamente el fenómeno del urban sprawl a nivel mundial, el problema opuesto a esto, como son las shrinking cities, han tenido un menor protagonismo en el mundo científico, no siendo un problema menor para las ciudades que lo padecen. ; Objectiu: Aquesta recerca té com a objectiu estudiar la reducció de Ferrol, mitjançant una descripció històrica i actual de la ciutat, i l'anàlisi dels seus factors i causes a través d'una sèrie d'indicadors. També, veient la importància i l'impacte que té la política sobre el procés i l'encongiment urbà de la ciutat. Metodologia: Havent analitzat el context de la situació de Ferrol caldrà procedir a estudiar el potencial de la ciutat i proposar estratègies o accions que puguin resoldre els problemes d'aquest fenomen, realitzant una anàlisi FODA. La metodologia utilitzada és la triangulació a través de mètodes quantitatius i qualitatius alhora. Les dades recollides i utilitzats per al compliment dels objectius són principalment de l'Institut Gallego d'Estadístiques (IGE) i de l'Institut Nacional d'Estadística (INE). The role of urban agriculture in global food security is a subject of growing debate. There are several types of research on urban and peri-urban agriculture, especially in the major cities. These studies usually consist of an analysis of cases that often have different definitions of urban and peri-urban agriculture depending on the local setting and mostly about the objectives of the study. (Thebo, et al., 2014). This lack of steadiness makes it difficult to quantify the scope of this practice on a global scale and presents a challenge for citizens, authorities and academic institutions to provide adequate structure for the transition from theory to the application of urban agriculture within cities. On the one hand, the design of policies that seek the development of regions is framed between two aspects that shape today's world: the global, as a growing economic, cultural and political integration. On the other side the local, as that trend towards Higher levels of self-determination, management, decentralization and development in communities. (Fuchs, et al., 2003). As a result, it is becoming easier for people to get involved in local politics by posing problems that directly affect neighborhoods. Local regulations become much more relevant to the daily life of a person trying to grow their food and feel that they can contribute positively to their community. On the other hand, Climate change and environmental impacts represent a real and grave threat, but there are many potential solutions to them. The present paper aims to analyze the potential of urban agriculture within our environment.

This article offers a detailed analysis of key urban processes that have been consolidated in different Latin American cities over the XXI century; they fundamentally consist of a reconquest of central and peri-central areas by real estate capital. The metamorphosis of the consolidated city has become apparent thanks to the regular use of three central terms: gentrification, displacement and dispossession. Through the conceptualization of the notion of displacement as a material, political, symbolic and psychological process, this paper builds a theoretical understanding of the phenomena that lead to the displacement of popular subjectivities from the central and peri-central areas of Latin American cities. Such a premise is used to comparatively analyze the situation of five cities –Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago and Quito– and categorize the different displacement and dispossession processes. This discussion also analyzes the meaning of territorial reconfiguration in relation to spatial injustice and the discourses on the "Right to the City", thus providing a political understanding of the 21st century key urban processes. ; Este artículo aporta una comprensión pormenorizada de los procesos urbanos claves que se han ido perpetuando en las ciudades latinoamericanas durante los primeros tres lustros del siglo XXI y que consisten en la reconquista de las áreas centrales y peri-centrales por parte del capital inmobiliario. Esta metamorfosis de la ciudad consolidada se ha manifestado a partir del uso habitual de tres términos centrales: gentrificación, desplazamiento y desposesión. In the 1990s, urban revitalisation strategies aimed at re-positioning cities on the map of globally competitivemetropolis have strongly relied on the planning and implementation of Large-scale Urban DevelopmentProjects (UDP) to bring on economic regeneration. These emblematic projects are present all over theurban and regional landscape and are the material expression of a logic of development that sees in themas major leverages for generating future growth and attracting investment capital and/or consumers. Thispaper analyses the transformation of urban policy since the mid 1980s by looking at the role of large scaleurban projects in urban revitalisation strategies. The first part presents the socio-economic and politicalcontext in which UDPs develop. In section two, urban revitalisation policy is set against a background of changingurban governance, shifting priorities and urban bussiness ethos – Section three, locates UDPs at the centreof revitalisation schemes in European cities over the last decade. Finally, the fourth section addressesthe limits of urban business ethos and the new urban governance and points to the need for new directions. ; Este artículo analiza los cambios en la formulación y gestión de la política urbana en las ciudadesEuropeas desde mediados de los años 80.
