A literature review shows that many feel a trend of individualization is occurring in the Netherlands. However, no clear definition of individualization has been established. Proceeding from the work of J. W. van Deth (1992), the definition of individualization as an increase in the number of persons with a postmaterialistic value orientation (ie, preferring autonomy, self-development, & emancipation over tradition, obedience, & personal wealth) is considered. The objection arises that the interest people show in material welfare is not closely tied to their striving for self-development & independence, & therefore not to their degree of individualism in values. Thus, a new definition for individualization is proposed focusing on independence, self-development, emancipation, & decreasing appreciation for tradition & obedience. Analysis of official statistical & electoral data from 1974 to 1989 showed that no individualization occurred over this period. Surprisingly, the degree of individualism displayed by value orientations actually decreased. 17 Figures, 3 Graphs. M. Meeks

It is often argued that new social movements, in contrast to earlier ones such as the Wc movement, should be analyzed primarily in terms of value change rather than of structural characteristics of movement participants. The influence of three major value types associated with new social movements -- postmaterialism, individualism & hedonism, & antimodernism -- on the Dutch peace movement is examined through research findings. Individualism & hedonism are unrelated or negatively related, & antimodernism is only weakly related, to the individual potential for new social movements; only postmaterialism is strongly related to it. Postmaterialism is itself primarily related to structural variables such as SC position & integration into institutions such as the Church & the private sector of the economy that reproduce existing social conditions. These findings call the current emphasis on values change into question. 4 Tables, 21 References. Modified HA

DUTCH POLITICAL SCIENTISTS RECOMMEND THE USE OF D. EASTON'S FORMULATION OF THE 'AUTHORITATIVE ALLOCATION OF VALUES' BUT DO NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE SPECIFIC WAY IN WHICH HE DEFINES THE CONCEPT OF AUTHORITY. HE EMPHASIZES THAT AUTHORITY PERTAINS TO THE FACT OF COMPLIANCE, IRRESPECTIVE OF THE REASONS FOR IT. AUTHORITY MAY BE BASED ON COERCION. IT MAY BE LEGITIMATE, BUT IT MAY BE NONLEGITIMATE (COERCIVE) AS WELL. THE 'AUTHORITATIVE ALLOCATION OF VALUES' REFERS TO THE BINDING CHARACTER OF THE OUTPUTS OF THE POLITICAL SYSTEM. WE ARE BOUND TO COMPLY, WHETHER WE WANT IT OR NOT. EASTON PAYS CONSIDERABLE ATTENTION TO THE INPUT OF SUPPORT IN THE POLITICAL SYSTEM. WE ARE LENDING SUPPORT TO THE POWER HOLDERS, EVEN WHEN WE ARE COMPLYING UNDER THE THREAT OF SEVERE DEPRIVATIONS. THE RELATIVE F OF COMPLIANCE IS INTRODUCED AS AN ESSENTIAL VARIABLE OF THE POLITICAL SYSTEM. THIS RELATIVE F MAY BE RELATIVE TO THE EXTENT THAT IT WOULD BE UNNECESSARY TO REQUIRE A RESERVOIR OF DIFFUSE SUPPORT (IE LEGITIMACY). WHEN EASTON DOES START BACK FROM THE IDEA THAT COERCION MAY GUARANTEE THE PERSISTENCE OF A POLITICAL SYSTEM, THIS IS A RATHER SHAKEY STEP. EASTON SEEMS SET AGAINST THE APPLICATION OF 'UNDEMOCRATIC' INSTRUMENTS. SUCH ANTIPATHY AS TO COERCIVE MEANS OF COMPLIANCE DOES NOT FIT WITH HIS REMARKS ON THE PLACE OF AUTHORITY IN THE CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK. AS FOR THE CRUCIAL FORMULATION OF THE 'AUTHORITATIVE ALLOCATION OF VALUES', IT IS POSSIBLE TO ANALYZE TESTS OF STRENGTH, REVOLUTIONS, TERRORISM, & DESPOTISM. THE APPROACH IS FAIRLY DYNAMIC. TODAY'S POWER-HOLDERS MAY BE TOMORROW'S POWERLESS; THE 'AUTHORITIES' HAVE THE CAPACITY TO ORDER OTHERS, NEITHER MORE NOR LESS. HA.

The impact of the EU on everyday life is huge, but not always visible. Educating young people to become informed and empowered EU citizens requires a strategy of active learning to prepare them for civic responsibility and democratic participation. This book is a practical guide for secondary or higher education teachers aiming to train their students to be critical citizens through a variety of different subjects and courses. Stories based on cases dealt with by the Court of Justice of the European Union stimulate students to think critically. These stories illustrate the impact of the EU on numerous aspects of the daily lives of its citizens: from the internal market and the free movement of goods and persons, to issues relating to democracy, equality, privacy, social rights, consumer protection, the environment and migration. Through various learning activities and teaching methods the book provides insight into the DNA of the EU and EU citizenship. European citizenship in the classroom is therefore a must-read for anyone who wants to understand European citizenship better or who wants to stimulate young people to reflect on it critically. This manual originated from the Erasmus+ project Case4EU and was written by a multidisciplinary team of authors (law, philosophy, political and social sciences).

Compromises have long been considered as the most important ingredient for the success of the Belgian and Dutch pacification democracy. The trick is to find one another in the middle was by politicians but also by political scientists (Lijphart, 1977) and analysts as an ideal put forward. Koen Koch described this a little whimpering but striking in a commentary on the policies of the second Cabinet Cook (1998-2002), in which Liberals and Social Democrats sat together: 'The color of political success in the Netherlands is not purple, but gray' (Koch, 1999). Deliberative democrats claim that political deliberation among citizens increases the legitimacy of and support for democratic decision-making. The question is, however, whether deliberative democracy can realize its added value in the real world of politics where political discussion is characterized by persisting inequalities. This paper tries to contextualize the gender gap in political talk by taking into account the social (i.e., discussion networks) and political context (i.e., campaign effects) in which political debate takes place. Based on previous research we argue that women prefer to discuss politics in relatively like-minded, cohesive networks, while men prefer more confrontational networks. Moreover, we expect the gender gap to depend on the electoral context, in that the gender gap disappears in later campaign phases. These two arguments were tested and confirmed using data gathered in the Partirep Regional Election Survey in 2009. Adapted from the source document.

Supporting people with disabilities is a cornerstone of the Dutch welfare state. It has become part of our cultural ideal that government people who can not (more) provide (WRR, 2006, p. 115). Care for themselves Especially after World War II, the government has expanded its involvement with the landmark introduction of the Exceptional Medical Expenses Act (EMEA) in 1968. The EMEA is a national insurance scheme, every resident of the Netherlands secures long-term care and assistance at home or in an institution. Were increasingly welfare-related forms of support in the care of the government in the sixties of the twentieth century, moreover, brought and created a versatile professional sector, with specializations as neighborhood and community work, and social work with elderly people (Duyvendak, 2002).
