Visual Culture ; Cultura visual
The article proposes the term "Visual Culture" as a concept that provides a wide range of contents prone for interpretation in historical researches. In the introduction, the author analyzes and justifies the concept itself, as well as its scope as a useful instrument for investigators, emphasizing on its applicability for studying, evaluating and understanding images, while revealing that all visual culture responds to theparticular interests of a managing elite and it is aimed to a specific social group or human settlement. Then, based on three well-known periods of Colombian history (pre-Hispanic times, the Colony and the Independence), the author demonstrates this hypothesis.

The artistic work, understood as a concept and a tangible object in any of its multiple technical and aesthetic categories, stands as an invaluable source of information, not only because of its intrinsic values, such as its formal characteristics, style or by whom it was created, among others. , but also for its ability to represent and make visible aspects of daily life, symbols of civil and religious power, beliefs, devotions and rites, historical events, social elements, feelings or connections between various plastic manifestations, transcending the limits of the merely artistic. until it becomes an object or artifact that encapsulates and preserves the culture, thought and concerns of a given time and a specific geographical space. This volume is made up of twenty-two papers by specialists participating in the Visual History and Culture Symposium, as well as others who have kindly accepted our invitation to share their studies. In the same way that the contributions collected are bidirectional between the New World and the Old Continent, their authors come from academic, cultural institutions and research centers located in the American and European space, making the relevance of these topics visible today through international level.
Cuerpos visuales
; Throughout Western history, the body has been treated and conceived through different nuances, both ideological and religious, with political, moral and scientific arguments. Art, especially, has explored its representation from prehistory to the present day evidencing a need in the creation of images that mean it. This approach has been made by the media, through advertising for example, as well as the cinema. In the different treatments, elements such as the conception of beauty, power, identity, cult, life and death, etc. have been used. The present proposal consists of a dissertation about the body and the treatment of the representative images that make up the contemporary visual and ideological culture, having as a constructive axis the film "Las hijas del fuego" (2018), by Albertina Carri, which introduces us to a universe of diverse and imperfect bodies that do not reflect the historical-sexual hegemony of the corporeal, thus allowing a debate about the current treatment of the body, the norm, the destruction and self construction of the body and its representation ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Imaginando América Latina: Historia y cultura visual, siglos XIX a XXI ; Imagining Latin America: History and visual culture, 19th to 21st centuries
; Can images influence history? Are they true evidence of the past? This compilation appears in the light of the renewed interest showed by the discipline of history and human sciences in interpreting visual sources as productions that were intentionally elaborated and disseminated in specific times and spaces. Moving away from an innocent and contemplative view, the authors of the book, through their contributions, propose to place the social function of images at the center of their case analyses, which cover a broad set of Latin American processes that took place between the 19th and the 21st centuries in countries such as Chile, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Argentina. Thus, each chapter invites the reader to "visually think" about issues such as political propaganda, nation building, the assemblage of identities or collective memories, etc., based on the methodological assumption that suggests tracking images from their production to their reception, where they acquire multiple meanings in their respective presents, as well as in their current preservation status. Imagining Latin America is, then, an initiative open to different disciplinary perspectives that are not limited only to readings from historians. The twelve chapters included in this book seek to reflect on the capacity of the image to connect realities at global and local scales, insisting on demonstrating a double relationship between the historicity of the visual and the visuality of history.

Photography and visual memoirs of military dictatorship.
The social demand that prevails in Chile on the recovery of the memory of the most sensitive events in the country, during the years of the military regime (1973-1990), has resulted in the publication of several books of pictures taken during those years. For this reason, a significant number of documentary photographs are currently available, which illustrate the repressive practices committed by the security forces. Images were decisive to generate national and international rejection against the Junta Militar. This article, on the one hand, presents a general view of the historical evolution of documentary photography in Chile during this period. On the other hand, it develops a reflection on the main characteristics of the images taken and disseminated that were related to violations of rights. At the beginning of the 21st century, artist Lygia Pape presented Carandiru, an installation characterized by the use of the red color, in a direct allusion to both the 1992 massacre in the São Paulo penitentiary and the genocide of indigenous peoples during colonial Brazil. The materiality of the works highlighted the dramatic dimension of both events and opened up a series of meanings that are in turn linked to LatinAmerican history and Brazilian art. This topic had been addressed by NunoRamos in 1992 (the year of the killings in the penitentiary) in 111, a striking installation made up of stones, light bulbs and tar as basic elements. El retorno de King Kong : Una activación visual y política del trauma ; The Return of King Kong. A visual and Political Activation of the Trauma
; The image triumphs in a global scene in which nothing seems real and, at the same time, it offers a kind of hyperrealism similar to the show. Notes for the Crossings between Feminisms and Visual Studies
; The debates around gender, feminisms, and sexual disobediences in the field of art history have been gathering relevance in the context of visual studies from new approaches and theoretical, epistemological, and methodologica l possibilities that, in turn, become political in the sense that they enable debates around the ways in which visual representations construct, delimit and discipline what is seen (or, precisely, what is unseen). The present study revises some of the theoretical and methodological aspects that I have been utilizing throughout my doctoral thesis research process in order to analyze feminist experiences and interventions in the case of artistic practices in Argentina. A brief commentary on some of the technical developments, difficulties and possibilities that hybridity enabled in the different methodological and conceptual frameworks is also part of this article, which, at the same time, opens up the debate around the very delimitations of the discipline of art history owing to feminist criticism. Thus, our experience when addressing these artistic experiences is not disciplined to the problems and modes of the very discipline and the canons of analysis of the art works. It consists, rather, of a work from the discipline's borders and margins of vision. This will be followed by an analysis of the Digitalized Archive of Lesbian Activism, Potencia Tortillera, as a possible crossing between artistic practices, images, feminism, lesbian activism and political visualities. Minor, underground knowing and practices offer the reading strategies capable of interfering in the local art history narrative. ; Fil: Gutierrez, Maria Laura.
; Mesoamerican codices were painted before and after the arrival of the Spaniards in Mexico. In these, information that varies in theme is presented. In order to determine if they are manuscripts of design and visualization of information, two codices elaborated by the Mixtec culture were analyzed. The Zouche Nuttall Codex written during the pre- Hispanic period was studied. This manuscript tells the life of Lord 8 Deer, Jaguar Claw who, according to various codices, was a ruler, priest, military and Mixtec chieftain in the eleventh century. The Sierra Codex was also studied, a novohispanic document prepared between 1551 and 1564 to record the expenses of Santa Catarina Texupan, a community in the Mixteca Alta of Oaxaca. The findings allowed to define that data such as: names, dates, places, ceremonies, among others, were designed to communicate information according to the purpose of each codex. In addition, it was determined that the use of color has an informative function in both codices even though the color palette is reduced.
