When George W. Bush took office in 2000 he intended to scale back U.S. engagement in the Middle East. September 11 changed all of that. The "War on Terror" became the main priority of American foreign policy. Under that label the administration has followed an aggressive & determined course of action in the Middle East. Seven years later, the results of that strategy are, to say the least, controversial. Adapted from the source document.
The article aims to clarify John Dewey's conception of the interchanges between education, art and democracy, with the purpose of suggesting paths for a critique of today's pedagogical trends. To achieve this goal, John Dewey's theses on the intellectual production of Ralph Waldo Emerson published in the 1903 essay "Emerson, the philosopher of democracy" are analyzed. The method used for this endeavor is the rhetorical analysis proposed by Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca. In line with such theses, Emerson's ideas are examined in the Sophistic light, in a version opposite to that assumed by Plato, with special attention to the notions of perception, power and democracy, which are related to the Dewey concepts of immediate experience, experience aesthetic and democratic experience. The article concludes that John Dewey's reflections inspired by Emerson suggest that education today must be guided by the transforming power of the imagination. The quantum mechanics instituted a completely new mathematical language. This change in physics required physicists and philosophers to rethink the concepts by which reality could be represented, since classical notions were limited in the understanding of atomic phenomena. The French philosopher G. Bachelard and the German physicist W. Heisenberg are authors who have discussed the major changes that have occurred in physics and have dealt with the problem of language in quantum mechanics. In this article, the objective is to resort to the arguments of both authors to evidence relations between their ideas about the referred subject. It is noteworthy that Bachelard and Heisenberg criticize the application of the usual language and philosophical concepts of modernity in the new physics, but, through his notion of rupture, the French philosopher proposes that quantum mechanics be restricted to mathematical language. This idea runs counter to Bohr's principle of complementarity, which Heisenberg acknowledges in the understanding of quantum phenomena and an interpretation of quantum physics.

This article examines a study by Theodor Adorno about the radio phonic utterances of the extreme right-wing political activist in the USA, Pastor Martin Luther Thomas, in the 1930s. In examining these discourses through the method of content analysis, Adorno sought to understand the motives that led individuals to perpetuate the same economic relations as their forces had overcome, instead of replacing them with a superior and more rational form of social organization. After more than 70 years, this study is undoubtedly an indispensable instrument for understanding the current social scenario, mainly politic.

This article presents the contribution of Theodor W. Adorno to the configuration of an education capable of confronting contemporary irrationalism, through a resumption of the definition of dialectics as a critic of philosophical thought. It has modernly limited itself to rationalizing rationality to the highest power, without dwelling on the effects of its unfulfilled promises. The work of Adorno is recognized by a propensity according to which it is the responsibility of philosophy to critically reflect and clarify the way culture organizes itself. Such a proposition leads to a theoretical project that presupposes an awareness of the misconceptions of reason, in an attempt that, through enlightenment, man can construct possibilities of autonomy and emancipation. The article is organized in two parts, as follows: 1. Theorical-practical ambitions of the critical theory of society and 2) The threads that weave TW Adorno's critical theory, divided into three topics: a) The general cultural climate of late capitalism - the propensity for barbarism; b) Bankruptcy of culture - objective reason of barbarism; c) Reflexes of damaged life: the sickness of contact.

This article offers an evaluation of the United States relationship with Latin America during Bush's two terms at the White House. We argue that the main trend of the Bush administration in Latin America has been a process of "hemispheric disengagement" which has led to the erosion of American influence in the region, a problem that the next President will have to address, be he a Democrat or a Republican. In an election year both in Russia & the United States, this article tries to assess the impact of the nearly simultaneous mandates of George W. Bush & Vladimir Putin on the relationship between those two countries. Its main conclusions point to a different 'intensity' in the way they pursued their goals & implemented their policies; to the basic similarity in the means employed by Washington & Moscow in their foreign & national security policies, & to the persistence of the same topics in the Russian-American agenda in these last eight years (the governance model, strategic & security options, energy issues).
