; This joint study by the Cologne Institute for Economic Research and the Institute for Economic and Social Psychology at the University of Cologne investigates the negative effects of state intervention on the motivation and productivity of public welfare recipients. At first an integrative model of individual behavior was developed as a theoretical basis. The subsequent analysis of social stratification and social mobility in Germany is followed by an examination of examples of welfare traps. The key finding is that state intervention often undermines the willingness and ability to work of those affected. This lowers their prospects of eventually leaving a certain social environment and thus of achieving upward mobility. The suggested remedy is to concentrate economic and educational policy measures on strengthening employability and improving the education system (eduployment). The aim is to increase the permeability of social strata and provide better opportunities for everybody. In addition, certain corrections to the way welfare is distributed are necessary in order to boost the incentives to work and to reduce inefficiencies in the welfare system.

(Verlagstext)
A wealth of research in recent decades has seen the economic approach to human behavior extended over many areas previously considered to belong to sociology, political science, law, and other fields. Research has also shown that economics can illuminate many aspects of sports, including soccer. Beautiful Game Theory is the first book that uses soccer to test economic theories and document novel human behavior. In this brilliant and entertaining book, Ignacio Palacios-Huerta illuminates economics through the world's most popular sport. He offers unique and often startling insights into game theory and microeconomics, covering topics such as mixed strategies, discrimination, incentives, and human preferences. He also looks at finance, experimental economics, behavioral economics, and neuroeconomics. Soccer provides rich data sets and environments that shed light on universal economic principles in interesting and useful ways.Essential reading for students, researchers, and sports enthusiasts, Beautiful Game Theory is the first book to show what soccer can do for economics.

The financial crisis that started in 2007 is a concern for the world. Some countries are in depression and governments are desperately trying to find solutions. In the absence of thorough debate on the emotions of money, bitter disputes, hatred and 'moralizing' can be misunderstood. New Perspectives on Emotions in Finance carefully considers emotions often left unacknowledged, in order to explain the socially useful versus de-civilising, destructive, nature of money. This book offers an understanding of money that includes the possible civilising sentiments. This interdisciplinary volume examines what is seemingly an uncontrollable, fragile world of finance and explains the 'panics' of traders and 'immoral panics' in banking, 'confidence' of government and commercial decision makers, 'shame' or 'cynicism' of investors and asymmetries of 'impersonal trust' between finance corporations and their many publics. Money is shown to rely on this abstract trust or 'faith', but such motivations are in crisis with 'angry' conflicts over the 'power of disposition'. Restraining influences - on 'uncivilised emotions' and rule breaking - need democratic consensus, due to enduring national differences in economic 'sentiments' even in ostensibly similar countries. Promising ideas for global reform are assessed from these cautionary interpretations.
