"Dargestellt werden einige der dem gegenwärtigen Forschungsprogramm des MPIfG unterliegenden Überlegungen. Das Papier beginnt mit einer Diskussion der programmatischen Entwicklung des Instituts seit seiner Gründung im Jahre 1984. Seit damals eingetretene Veränderungen bestanden vor allem in (1) zunehmender Anerkennung eines langfristigen Rückgangs der Steuerungsfähigkeit des Nationalstaats, bei gleichzeitig wachsender Bedeutung selbstregulierender, 'freier' nationaler und internationaler Märkte; (2) vermehrter Befassung mit kulturellen Sinndeutungen und Symbolen sowie mit normativen Fragen; (3) einer allmählichen Umorientierung von Policy zu Politics; und (4) expliziterer Einbeziehung von Geschichte und Berücksichtigung der Geschichtlichkeit der Probleme und Beobachtungen, die Gegenstand der Sozialwissenschaften sind. Der zweite Teil des Papiers argumentiert, dass Gesellschaftsforschung heute als Untersuchung von Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft des modernen Kapitalismus betrieben werden sollte. Der vielversprechendste Ansatz dazu besteht in einer engen Zusammenarbeit zwischen politischer Ökonomie und Wirtschaftssoziologie. Dabei können die politische Ökonomie von einer expliziteren Mikro-Fundierung in einer soziologischen Handlungstheorie und die Wirtschaftssoziologie von einer systematischeren Berücksichtigung der Politik und des Staates profitieren. Drittens wird dargelegt, wie sich der am MPIfG verfolgte Ansatz vom Mainstream der Wirtschaftssoziologie, von der sogenannten Neuen Institutionellen Ökonomie sowie von der Forschungsrichtung der Behavioral Economics unterscheidet. Das Papier endet mit einer Beschreibung von vier Forschungsthemen, die für die künftige Arbeit am MPIfG von besonderer Bedeutung sein werden: (1) die Natur rationalen wirtschaftlichen Handelns; (2) die Konstitution von Märkten; (3) Entstehung und Wandel von Institutionen; und (4) das Verhältnis von Kapitalismus und Demokratie." "I argue that in its adaptation from Karl Polanyi's 'The Great Transformation', the concept of embeddedness has itself undergone a great transformation. In the process, significant meanings of the concept have vanished, while others have been added. First I explore the different meanings the concept of embeddedness has achieved in the new economic sociology. Then I argue that it is not the embeddedness of economic action that should constitute the vantage point of economic sociology, but rather three coordination problems that actors face in economic exchange: the valuation of goods, competition and the problem of cooperation deriving from the social risks of exchange. I show that by proceeding from these coordination problems economic sociology, economic anthropology and economic history can find common research questions which allow them to enter into dialogue with each other more systematically. In the next section I focus on the social-reformist inclinations of Polanyi's use of the notion of embeddedness and thereby highlight a challenge posed in 'The Great Transformation' that was largely not taken up by economic sociologists. Finally, I discuss limitations for developing a macro theory of the economy that result from making embeddedness the core concept of economic sociology." (author's abstract)

"The essay examines from a historian's point of view the approaches to the analysis of market exchange in new economic sociology and explores in which way sociology and history can cooperate in embedding markets in temporal structures. In a first step the author sharply criticises the favourable reception given to Karl Polanyi' s work 'The Great Transformation' in the field of new economic sociology. In particular she discusses the narrowing of research perspectives and its negative side effects on the sociology of markets. There then follows a second step: in order to find a linking point for interdisciplinary cooperation, beginning with the current state of historical research, the author makes several considerations on the significance of temporal structures and the time factor in general in analysing markets and market societies." "This text explores the history and conditions of origins of two very popular metaphor-fads in the context of the German transformation process. Moreover it analyses the impact of the changing contexts on the meaning of metaphors. Two theses are illuminated: 1. The early transformation period required a strong and shared believe that the far-reaching political actions started made a good economic and social sense with regards to the initial situation. Thus the discoursive construction of the GDR as an 'sick society' served eastern as well as western definitions and postulations. 2. The diversifying interests between East and West as well as the wide-ranging process of deindustrialisation with all its problematic consequences led to a development of more elaborate and distinguishing metaphors such as 'Buschzulage' that are not quite emphasizing the common beliefs but the separating elements. The research is carried out by an analysis of data banks containing nationwide German newspapers." (author's abstract)

"The contribution focuses on the institutional implementation and the individual consequences of activation programs in Germany (often referred to as 'Hartz' reforms) implemented between 2003 and 2005. The new labor market policy is a highly contested topic. The ongoing protest against this policy promotes speculations for further reformations. We approach the topic from the subjective perspective of the job seekers as well as the institutional side. On the basis of regional case studies developed from interviews with different regional experts of labor market policies we conducted a qualitative longitudinal survey of the group targeted by the most recent labor market reforms. We put a particular emphasis on the interrelation between unemployed persons' labor market orientations as well as their strategies of dealing with their position in the labor market, and the 'rights and responsibilities' they are given by the new labor market regulations. We can show that the new activation program doesn't reflect the different types of unemployed people. Instead its standardised procedures show lots of unintended effects such as stigmatisation and social exclusion." (author's abstract)

Bei der Analyse der Gründe, warum befristete Beschäftigungsformen in den industrialisierten Volkswirtschaften inzwischen so weit verbreitet sind, werden Berufe und ihre mögliche Schutzfunktion bislang nicht berücksichtigt. Der Autor schließt diese Lücke, indem er Berufe und ihren Einfluss auf individuelle Befristungsrisiken untersucht. Er erweitert auf diese Weise die Schließungstheorie um das wichtige Feld der befristeten Beschäftigungsformen und entwickelt neue und höchste innovative Maße zur Erfassung der Schließung von beruflichen Arbeitsmärkten. Mit diesen Maßen kann erstmals die Knappheit bestimmter beruflicher Ausbildungszertifikate oder die Einzigartigkeit der ausgeübten beruflichen Tätigkeiten erfasst werden. Diese und weitere Maße erlauben es dem Autor zu zeigen, wie bestimmte Berufe die Beschäftigten davor schützen, befristete Verträge zu erhalten

Political economy and economic sociology have developed in relative isolation from each other. While political economy focuses largely on macrophenomena, economic sociology focuses on the level of social interaction in the economy. The paper argues that economic sociology can provide a microfoundation of political economy beyond rational actor theory and behavioral economics. Based on a discussion of what I call the four Cs of capitalism (credit, commodification, creativity, and competition), I argue that macroeconomic outcomes depend on the contingent expectations actors have in decision situations. Expectations are based on the indeterminate and therefore contingent interpretation of the situations actors face. This shifts attention to the management of expectations as a crucial element of economic activity and to the institutional, political, and cultural foundations of expectations. The dynamics of capitalist development are precarious because they hinge on the creation of expectations conducive to economic growth. ; Politische Ökonomie und Wirtschaftssoziologie haben sich relativ isoliert voneinander entwickelt. Während die Politische Ökonomie vornehmlich Makrophänomene untersucht, konzentriert sich die Wirtschaftssoziologie zumeist auf die Ebene der sozialen Interaktion in der Wirtschaft. Der Beitrag zeigt, dass die Wirtschaftssoziologie Grundlagen für eine Mikrofundierung der Politischen Ökonomie jenseits der Theorie rationalen Handelns und behavioristischer Theorien bietet. Ausgehend von der Diskussion vier zentraler Elemente kapitalistischer Ökonomie, die ich als the four Cs of capitalism bezeichne (credit, commodification, creativity, and competition), zeige ich, dass makroökonomische Resultate auf den kontingenten Erwartungen der Akteure in der Handlungssituation beruhen. Erwartungen gründen auf den unbestimmten und daher kontingenten Interpretationen der Handlungssituation, mit der die Akteure konfrontiert sind. Dies lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit auf das Erwartungsmanagement als zentrales Element wirtschaftlichen Handelns und zu den institutionellen, politischen und kulturellen Grundlagen von Erwartungen. Die Dynamik kapitalistischer Entwicklung ist immer prekär, weil sie von der Schaffung von Erwartungen abhängt, die Wachstum befördern.
