The intention of this study based on analysis of the series of European Value Study (1990, 1999, 2009 and 2018) is to investigate, using a comparative, diachronic approach, the relationship between modernization and the gender gap in religiosity in Italy. In line with the theoretical perspective which valorizes the role of culture in explaining this relationship, our hypothesis is that the most modernized areas demonstrate a more contained gender gap. We expect that differences of religiosity between men and women are more contained in the country's north-central zones - characterized by higher levels of modernization - compared with the south. Furthermore, since the distance between the levels of modernization in the two areas has not increased noticeably over the last three decades, we could be forgiven for expecting that the difference between them in the religious field would not reveal important changes. To our surprise, the findings of the analyses offer but limited support to our hypothesis.

This research studies the origin and evolution of venetian female monasticism from IX to XIV centuries. Religion dynamics is the focus of this study but it examines relationships with venetian politic situation. It starts with a "large" monasticism that includes great variety of women's spiritual experiences to arrive to consider a "strict" monasticism through the analysis of istitutionalisation processes. This study considers not only Church point of view, but also women's religion vocations.

; Women's "political" power has been investigated in a considerable amount of studies for the last years. In virtue of this, it needs to be reformulated and defined both in the long term and in its specificities. In this paper we will try to discern what both women's power and their political role in the court mean by referring to some recent studies which opened up new spaces for historiographic reflection on the history of women's courts. We will try to give an answer to some relevant questions from the standpoint of historical narrative: namely, whether women management of power should be intended as capacity of choice and an ability of administrating spaces of autonomy and of concrete intervention in the private and the public sphere as well; and whether and when it would be likely to speak of a women's power independent of men's power that is capable of giving rise to a different category of the same concept.

The concomitant subjection of women and animals was denounced as early as 1990 by Carol J. Adams in The Sexual Politics of Meat, where she identified the intersections of discourses that aim at the subjugation of women and animals and censured those practices that animalize women and feminize animals for the better exploitation of both. More recent ecofeminist debates, however, have highlighted women's vindication of animality with the aim to recuperate one's repressed animal nature and rebel against oppressive anthropocentric and androcentric constrictions (Velasco Sesma 2017). This article focuses on contemporary Irish and Galician poetry concerned with the performativity of animality and womanhood in contemporary society and engaged in the emancipation of women and animals from patriarchal oppression. Ireland and Galicia have shared longstanding cultural bonds and, since the 1990s, have experienced a conspicuous accession of women writers who have participated in the feminist and environmental debates of their respective communities. This article exposes the intersecting discourses and practices that subdue animals and women, as evinced in contemporary Irish and Galician writing, and shows how poetry can become a locus of resistance and woman-animal complicity in the struggle for mutual emancipation.

; Red Cross is one of the biggest and most long-lived humanitarian organizations ever. The institution has been alive for more than 150 years and it is present in 190 States. I decided to do a sociological and historical research because I wanted to analyze the women's roles of the American Red Cross and the Italian one during the First World War. Therefore, this thesis shows some social and cultural differences between Italian and American realities. I have taken a gendered approach to both case studies (American Red Cross and Croce Rossa Italiana) and organized the thesis in three parts. The first one is about the theoretical framework. In the second part I talk about the subject of study and the historical context of the Great War. Finally, in the third section I describe the research and the results achieved. I chose a non-intrusive methodology, and I collected many archival documents in Italy and in the United States to better understand the roles of women within those two institutions. Therefore, I did a quantitative and qualitative comparative analysis by using SPSS20 and NVivo12.

My paradigms in this respect were Lady Anne Clifford and Alice Anne Thornton. They produced texts that have not even been mentioned or considered for centuries, but that have recently been partially rediscovered and appreciated by critics. My intent was to show how cultural factors and ideologies of the time influenced literary production, and to analyse the reasons that led these authors and their texts, first to oblivion, and later to recovery and canonization. When attempting to give a coherent answer to these questions, I kept in mind the background of Renaissance cultural memory and ideology, with particular regard to notions of femininity. Women writers are "mothers of the text", creators of new horizons, expert connoisseurs of the ideologies of their time, but also lonely, isolated, subjected women, ready to record their memories in voices that try to rise above a thousand other voices. ; The reasons that led women to overcome the injunction against cultural expression, including autobiography are one of the most relevant topics of my thesis. We know that many female characters were marginalized, if not made virtually invisible in many cultures and ideologies. That's why I tried to unveil the "counter" itinerary of women's writing from oblivion to canonization. ; English writers then began to deal with secular autobiography in the seventeenth century. Though excluded from the political scene and from public social life, Early-modern women writers seemed to be able to add something new and significant to the memorials and autobiographies of their own contemporary authors. When a woman wanted to be considered a member of a community whose experience was worthy of memory, she was confined by her own culture and family situation in the role of daughter, wife and mother, and she was seen almost exclusively as the subject of stories of religious experience, visions, trances, ecstasies. However, in the late seventeenth century, autobiography began to depart from an exclusively religious background and from the narrative account of the lives of men, and women began not only to record events related to male lives, but also to explore their identity and their own experiences in autobiographical form. Autobiography acquired the modern meaning of personal, introspective, secular writing, and, suddenly, the texts written by daughters, mothers and wives began to be recognized as real contributions to a genre in constant evolution. ; This doctoral thesis deals with the problem of canonisation and/or exclusion of women's writings from the literary canon of the English Renaissance. More broadly, it deals with issues of memory and cultural transmission. The first part of the thesis focuses on memory in different disciplines and on studies of memory in the contemporary critical arena. I tried to give an overview of the most recent progress in this field of study. The following chapters deal with issues of oblivion and recognition (up to the canonisation) of English women's writers in the Renaissance.
