; This paper analyzes the history of women under a double perspective. On one side, some remarks are made about the necessary concepts to understand women's agency and its relation to given social conditions. On the other side, the subject-matter of the history of women is considered according to the political demands of the feminist agenda. The ambiguity of term "history" goes through this paper referring inasmuch the past as the science which studies it. This is crucial to understand the epistemological challenges of the history of women trying to generate not only knowledge but also a tool to intervene in the social and cultural world. This article analyses the work carried out in the sewing workshops by the women's organisation Mujeres al Servicio de España. The actors, agents and frameworks of recruitment of the first registrants, the process of expansion of the workshops and the motivations of the different groups of affiliates are examined. To do this, we start by reviewing the theoretical foundations provided by the agency's specialists and the scholars of collective action and we use the press and documentation from private and military archives as sources. It concludes by highlighting these women's relative capacity for agency and their important role in generating material and symbolic assets of great importance in the context of the civil war. Above all, with regard to their role as agents of socialization and their contribution to strengthening the collective identities of the rebels and to the reaffirmation of the paradigm of women defended by them.
Introduction and objectives: This article explores how the category of gender operates in relation to an increasingly unstable and uncertain environment. The central premise is that patriarchal legal culture legitimises existing gender inequalities in access to natural resources. This limits women's potential contributions to environmental change. Methodology: After a theoretical reflection on the socially constructed role of women as providers and suppliers of natural resources, the two backbone concepts of vulnerability and agency are confronted. Subsequently, the supposedly universal legal subject in the discipline of law is analysed, starting with gender as a critical category. Following this examination, it is proposed to revisit the law on the basis of a multiplicity of legal subjects and the contributions of ecofeminist movements. Results: Vulnerability and agency are not mutually exclusive. Rethinking a new legal framework with a gender perspective allows the two perspectives to converge. It is essential to review some fundamental legal categories, but above all to integrate the gender perspective in a cross-cutting manner. Discussion: It is pointed out that, to face the coming ecological crises, it is urgent to incorporate women's voices in decision-making on the management of environmental change. Otherwise, specific environmental needs are overlooked, and society is deprived of its full potential.
This paper approaches the complexity within women daily experiences in the republican exile in France from the memories of an exiled woman and under a gender perspective. We analyze her experiences looking for similar behavoir patterns to the rest of the exiled women. Hence, we will focus our attention on women's agency, on their relations with politics, on the convergence between public and private sphere, as well as on changes and remains in gender traditional discourses and practices in exile. Thus, we try to offer a new and renovated exile vision. Keywords: Exile, memories, women, daily life, women's agency.
The instrumental use of Muslim women's experiences as a symbol and justification for Western countries interventions is not a new business and was not employed for the first time in the post September 11th "war on terror" campaigns. Indeed, the production of stereotypes of Muslim women in political platforms can be tracked back to different colonial enterprises. Clearly, as Lughod (2002) has highlighted, the consistent resort to a cultural framing through the equation women/religion/suffering has always been a tool to hide political and economic interests and consequently to bury more complex political and historical developments. In the academic sphere, debates on Muslim women also widened. However, as Lila Abu-Lughod (2002) contended, the efforts were almost put solely on denouncing the great violent and oppressive contexts where those women were living under the barbaric violations perpetrated to them by Islamist movements. Otherwise, if a scholar tried to problematize the cultural framing of Muslim women's questions, she (or he) would very likely be accused of cultural relativism (Lughod, 2002). Therefore, a sole and unproblematic focus on the suffering of Muslim women is not only futile, but also contributes to reify the old Orientalist perceptions on Islam and Muslim women, and to provide intellectual foundations for Western imperialist wars. The objective of this article, on the contrary, is to raise another set of questions, which I believe to be more urgent. These questions aim at both unpacking Muslim women as a discursive category, and understanding the major challenges their experiences impose on secular feminist conceptions of agency. I contend that addressing these questions is more urgent for different reasons. Firstly, I argue vigorously that apart from the obsessive and somehow blind criticism that religion is inherently patriarchal and consequently oppressive to women, scholarship especially from within feminist theory remained oblivious to a more systematic and self-reflexive engagement with religion and Muslim women. In addition, I argue that surprisingly, even in a period of post-Orientalist deconstruction, which supposedly would have already dismissed those essentialist and repressive accounts of Muslim women and Islam, subtle but very important remnants can still be found on the so called "corrective" postcolonial feminist scholarship on Muslim women. Indeed, there is a plurality of work on Muslim women in the social sciences. However, they are scattered and apparently separated by their own agendas and claims, with very few attempts at dialogue or debate. Hence, a systematic account of this diversity has been missing, one which could provide an up to date appraisal of the state of scholarship and activism on Muslim women, and build a firm foundation for advancing knowledge both of the subject itself and on interdisciplinary efforts like the one I advance here. Therefore, while doing a systematic and critical literature review, oriented specifically by an interdisciplinary approach, I expect this article to fill part of this gap and raise crucial questions in order to build knowledge of the intersection between Muslim women's studies and feminist theory. It is here where more research is certainly needed in order to reduce the gulf that exists between both areas. The introduction of this article outlines briefly the ways through which Muslim women have been approached as a discursive category, constructing stereotypes of Muslim women in political platforms, as well as on the academic stage. Politically, the production of stereotypes can be tracked back to different colonial enterprises and more recently to the interventions by Western countries that comprised the "war on terror" campaign. On the academic stage, these stereotypes were reproduced in the sole efforts to denounce the great violent and oppressive contexts where those women are living, as previously mentioned. The first section is concerned with the exclusion of religion and more specifically of Muslim women's experiences from history and feminist knowledge production, including IR feminist studies. I acknowledge that the ontological and epistemological openness in feminist and gender studies in international relations and other areas ensured the recognition of the existence of differences and of multiple "layers" of identities which affect sexed bodies in distinct ways. These were crucial to challenge Eurocentric narratives as the only legitimate source of knowledge production. However, I put forward in this section that despite a greater plurality in feminist studies, there is still a silence from feminist theorists regarding religious women's experiences, and hence, the importance of religion to women (Salem, 2013). Using the work of Phyllis Mack (2003) I argue that one of the reasons for this gap resides in the metanarrative of secularization, which is the basis of secular feminist scholarship. Within this analytical framework, I analyse how the conceptions of agency and emancipation underlying the different strands of secular feminism are limiting to the different voices and experiences of Muslim women. The second section addresses the challenges Islamic feminism imposes to feminist notions of agency. As religion is seen as inherently patriarchal and oppressive to women, Islamic feminism or any other effort to pursue gender equality from within an Islamic framework would be taken as contradictory or incompatible. By locating the struggle within a religious framework, and at the same time claiming for the existence of what seems to be the untouchable foundations of Islam, Islamic feminists are cast away from secular feminisms. I argue that those experiences of activists and scholars make serious challenges to the notions of agency based on rationality and secularity as the only pillars whereby women can struggle for and reach gender equality. As a result, Islamic feminism(s)'s experiences also help to unsettle and complicate some binaries which feminist theory has been contributing to reify, such as secular/spiritual; reason/obscurantism; science/religion; freedom/oppression; modern/backward. In the third section, the article discusses some of the piety women's movements anchored on Saba Mahmood's work on pietistic agency, firstly in order to highlight the inability of most feminist scholarship in capturing the diversity of Muslim women's voices; second to denounce the perilous nature of encapsulating women's agency solely within "the entelechy of liberatory politics". These movements advance very different agendas and orientations from the Islamic feminist ones. Those agendas are precisely what denounce the subtle but very important remnants of Orientalist assumptions, particularly its adherence to secular-liberal values, and the teleological conceptions of modernity (Lakhani, 2008). I conclude the article arguing that rather than neglecting the important achievements feminism promoted in the lives of women in different parts of the world, the main intention of this work was to provincialize (to borrow the expression from Chakrabarty) the secular and liberal accounts of agency, feminism, empowerment, freedom and so on, locating them in the historical, political and cultural context that produced the desires that animate them.
; Based on the case study of the process of exhumation, reburial and territorial demarcation of two mass graves of women killed by Francoism in Candeleda (Ávila) and Grazalema (Cádiz), this article accounts for the processes and tensions around mass graves as sites of memory. Different forms of interpreting the ritualization of significative moments during the recovery of bodies of the executed by Francoism are discussed, as well as the tensions around dominant sites of memory and the mass grave after the exhumation. Also, these cases allow us to analyze dominant narratives around violence against women, their possible political involvement, as well as the ways to conceive and represent them implemented by civil society and institutions in those processes.
The different women emancipatory movements that developed from the end of the 18th century challenged patriarchal ways of understanding, not only what rights consist of, but also what strategies to use when deploying activism. Many of the claims that were shaping the beginnings of these movements —the right to education, suffrage, equal pay— insisted, for example, on diluting the patriarchal affective arrangement, borne upon and with patriarchal oppression. It is pertinent, then, to investigate the way in which the different self-defined emancipatory women's movements altered what to understand as a political strategy based on their certainty that the patriarchal order is legitimized through a specific affective arrangement that was intended to be unalterable. The goal of this paper is twofold. On one hand, to argue that, since its inception, women's emancipatory movements understood that, to be successful and, above all, lasting, the path requires altering the patriarchal affective arrangement to generate other possible ones capable of challenging the oppression that is based on an affective order purportedly unchangeable. The second objective is to argue that this process sets in motion a specific affective agency where affects are not mere resources for action, but rather indicate a stressed, although productive, relationship in terms of capacity for action, between affects and emotions. It was a matter of underlining, through different strategies, the contingency and injustice of the patriarchal affective arrangement in order to establish another one ready for emancipation and, from there, intervene in the world under a new logic.
; Youtube, the post-television medium par excellence, modifies young people's codes of representation and communication on issues such as identity and sexual orientation. The vídeo platform has become the ultimate weapon of LGTBQ activism (Polo, 2016) where gays, lesbians, bisexuals and queers take their stances. This occurs at a moment where post-feminism in mainstream media appears to be the only possible female representation: as a symbolic backlash against historical feminism —used on many occasions by icons of popular culture— it claims liberated, assertive, and authentic women, but at the same time obviates the injustices of patriarchy still firmly in place (Tasker and Black, 2005; Gill, 2007). The patterns of post-feminist representations are linked with authenticity, success, freedom of choice and female empowerment on the one hand, and with sexual agency and women's use of their bodies in order to achieve privileges on the other. This study investigates how young lesbian youtubers in Spain reproduce and/or resist this mainstream postfeminism. To this end we have selected a sample of five Spanish lesbian youtubers with a large number of subscribers (YellowMellow, Dulceida, Xuri Fenton, Gominuke, Koala Rabioso). Results show how these girls manage their bodies and appearance outside the logic of the male gaze, thus generating new (lesbic) imaginary. This grants lesbian youtubers a sexual agency that is not framed in post-feminism, but develops its own language. On the other hand, one of the most important features of these youtubers is authenticity. An authenticity that is not only framed in the logic of Youtube itself, but is also more reflexive (Giddens, 1994) and more politically engaging than post-feminist representations, generally void of ideology. Although each of these girls creates a successful personal brand —whether or not linked to commercial brands— they claim authenticity as their main value and manage to maintain their credibility by managing their failures in a humorous way.
One of the most relevant (and fascinating) issues in feminist theories and political practices in the last decades has been the shifts of the political subject (the Woman), characteristic – and necessary for mobilization– in the seventies and eighties, to the positions that defend women's agency. The later ones emerge, in the Spanish context, at the end of the eighties and beginning of the following decade. Some works have already analyzed the queer feminist theoretical contributions in relation to these displacements in other contexts. Nevertheless, its impact in the configuration of collective identity(ies) in the Spanish feminist movement –made possible, to a great extent, through the contagion of ideas between movements– has not yet been analyzed in depth from a movement internal perspective. This is my objective in this article.
The objective of this article is to analyse the role played by women in wartimes in one of the main and most interesting plays written by Margaret Cavendish, duchess of Newcastle (1623-1673): Bell in Campo, which has become one of her most relevant Works because of the approach she made to the female participation in war and, at the same time, serves as a propagandist item for the Queen Henrietta Maria of England actions'. Besides, this play makes some political and social claims in relation to woman and her visibility in society which allows us to consider Newcastle's writings within the first English feminism of 17th century.
Drawing on analytical frameworks proposed in recent scholarship on women's political representation, this article studies the archetypal case of the bancada femenina (women's caucus) in the Uruguayan Parliament from 2000-2010 in order to identify and analyse the possibilities and challenges posed by multiparty initiatives among female members of Parliament for achieving women's substantive representation. The article explores how the different dimensions of representation –descriptive, substantive and symbolic– interact in the composition, functioning, actions and discourse of this collective actor, and evaluates how factors relating to both agency and institutional contexts and conjunctures inform the substantive representation of women in the Uruguayan case.

; This qualitative research from a feminist paradigm, inquire, question, reflect and analyze, the process of transformation of subjectivities and gender identities subject to the policy of de Soacha´s Mothers setting. A group of women who began to organize in 2008, to fight for the search for truth, justice, reparation and non-repetition, before the disappearance, torture and extrajudicial killing of their children, in a social and political context pierced by a conflict armed which causes a systematic violation of human rights of the civilian population, with a strong gender impact. One of the cornerstones of this research work is the analysis of the capacity of women's agency, key to development as freedom, exercised from their individual and collective participation in public spaces, weaving associative links and politicizing its role as mothers.
The article examines the conflict emerging in the sixties from the threat of "factionalism" at the heart of the Communist Party of Ecuador (Partido Comunista del Ecuador (PCE) as a result of the bets being placed on guerrilla warfare by dissident groups who looked to Cuba's experience as a model to bring about the revolution. This crisis forced the PCE to rethink its approach to the role of women in its rank and file membership and to draw up control mechanisms based on the Party's hierarchical structure and the value system of its activism. As for the option to provide greater autonomy, it led certain leftwing women who were critical of the prevalence of men in the party's leadership and its hierarchical structure to develop their potential for organizing; this in turn sustained the opportunity for women to develop their own political agency marked by their gender difference.
